Soca Music

Origins of Soca
Soca is a genre of music that
originated on the
Caribbean island of Trinidad
and Tobago in the 70s. It
is known as an 'updated'
version of Calypso music.

Soca Today
Soca is known as carnival music
and is typically released at the
end and beginning of each year
so that islanders can learn the
music in time for their
carnivals.

Lyrics and structure

For carnivals, Soca is fast
paced and the
lyrics are usually
about having a good time
and dancing with the
people around
you. There are other
subgenres of Soca such
as 'Sweet Soca' that are
slower paced and
have lyrics about love
and other topics.

Subgenre's of Soca
Many Islands
experiment with Soca
music and end up forming
unique styles of Soca.
