Challenge: Design 3

preparation
techniques that will
produce more CO2
from soil than your
classmates over the
course of a week.
Which techniques
produce the most
CO2? The least?

CO2 production in the

soil can increase due to
a variety of soil
activities,
disturbances, and
management
techniques.

Challenge: Design 3 preparation techniques that will

produce more CO2 from soil than your classmates.
Which techniques produce the most CO2? The least?
With a partner, brainstorm and design at least 3 ways you
could increase CO2 production in your soil samples, all of
which will be taken from the same class plot.
Make sure your teacher signs off on your design!
Gather whatever materials you think you will need and
set up your 3 scenarios and control (for comparison)
Record daily CO2 readings for 1 week, starting today.

Materials:
4 Nalgene containers

Hints
1)

Carbon dioxide is
released from the soil
by microbes digesting
decaying material.
What do microbes
need to live that you
could increase?

2)

Its also produced by

respiration in the
cells of plant roots.
