The Unifying Connections of All
The coherence of a whole has to have every part of it functioning to become victorious, thus
meaning, everyone has to put in their part. In the 2009 film Avatar, the unity of all the parts of
Pandora, a separate world from Earth, struggles to overcome a big and bad wolf, even with their
powerful people, the Na'vi. Jake Sully, a former marine with paralyzed legs, becomes one of the
main heroes of Pandora when he overcame his own race by becoming an Avatar and gaining
great power. James Cameron uses nature, a spiritual force, and the people to show an important
unity principle: without one or the other, all of it as a whole cannot overcome successfully.
Nature was the introduction to Pandora, which set one of the most important principles to
unity. Ne'teri describes the nature of Pandora as, "All of the plants and animals have the ability to
connect there." This gives understanding on how important the flowers and trees and ground are
to the Na'vi and the connection they have. According to a publisher and article writer MT Maran,
he studied that in nature, we can find the physical power of unity. Maran gave the example of
weak metals being combined to form a stronger substance. He studied that if you take a weak
metal such as copper and another weaker metal, than it creates bronze, which is stronger than the
two weaker ones. This gives the understanding that the nature forces of the world are combined
to create bigger and stronger outcomes. Also in the movie it shows how in the end when they
overcame the battle, all of the animals and plants of Pandora showed up to complete the battle,

thus meaning, without them, the Na'vi would have possibly lost. This introduces another unity
principle in the movie, a spiritual force (Maran).
The Na'vi's spiritual source was one of their hopes in overcoming the battle. In the movie
it introduces three trees, and in those trees, one is sacred. This tree was called Eywa, the tree of
souls. This is where Jake went to ask for help against the war, and where all of the Na'vi gathered
in unity to a gathering, which was extremely similar to a prayer chain, or connecting with a
spiritual force much greater from above. In an examination of the film, an article writer Ryan A.
Piccirillo stated, "[T]hey devote hours to meditating among the sacred trees, observing the
beauty of nature, connecting with spirits, and channeling the flow of Eywa." This means that the
Na'vi are not complete without that spiritual force, giving another major principle in unity, which
gives introduction to the main source of unity which is the people of Pandora (Piccirillo).
The people, or the Na'vi, are exactly the main source of unity in all of Pandora. They
were the eyes and ears and defeat to the war. Without them, the battle would have been
devastating. In a review by Frederic and Mary Ann Brusast, they specified the Na'vi as, "[L]ike
other tribal cultures, they value harmony, simplicity, community, the spirit in nature, the sacred
feminine, and much more." This gives understanding to the exact main source of unity in
Pandora. Without them, Pandora would have been destroyed and a devastation. With certainty,
the Na'vi of Pandora were the most important principle in the unity of all. Think about it: If the
Na'vi were taken out of the film, or in a real world, would it have been the same outcome?
Would nature have defeated the evil forces from earth? Of course not, which gives the Na'vi the
greatest role in the film and perhaps the most innovating of them all. They filled the place with
their strong, sensible knowledge to overcome, and a connection to the audience (Brussat).

Without a doubt, the unity of Pandora would have not been successful if it wasnt for all
the factors and characteristics that were involved in such a beautiful, linked, and connecting
place. From the beginning to the ending of the film, many great actions took place that overcame
the big bad wolf, which portrayed the unity of all of the factors in Avatar. Cameron gave
knowledge to the audience that many strong factors and elements can subdue an evil force by the
combination of an abstract entity of people, spirit, and the forces of a universe. Nature, spiritual
forces, and the Na'vi were the unity principles that James Cameron portrayed in his movie
Avatar. Great understanding took place when one unity principle was portrayed throughout a
film: without one or the other, the mission cannot be complete.
