PROCEDURE
Introduction (5 min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber/Assessment of Prior Knowledge:
Math Trivia To warm up the students for math call out a basic addition fact.
If the student knows the answer they stand and wait to be called on before
they answer the question. Choose someone from the standing students to
answer the question. If they are correct toss them a candy.
Advance Organizer/Agenda:

Say: Today we are going to review addition. We will do some examples as a

class and then we are going to play a game. After the game you guys will
work in your jump math books and if you finish early I have some tricky
puzzles for you to try.
Transition to Body:
Do: Hand out whiteboards and base ten materials.
Body (50 min.):
Learning Activity #1: Group Lesson
Do: Write 15 + 43 on the board. Ask two different students to make each of
the numbers on the smart board using the base ten blocks.
Ask: What does it mean to add? (put things together)
Do: Write 32 + 66 on the board. Ask the students to show the addition on
their desks using base ten blocks and write the answer on their white boards.
Circulate the room and check their work.
Do: Repeat the above for about three more examples depending on the
students ability. Monitor student ability by checking their answers on their
whiteboards. (35 + 23, 45 + 24, 72 + 15, 62 + 36, 52 + 21, 20 + 34, 44 +
15, 32 + 32, 43 + 22)
Assessments/Differentiation:
As you circulate the room watch for students who are struggling and work
with them independently. Allow the students to use the base ten blocks based
on their needs.
Learning Activity #2: Bingo
Say: To practice your adding WITHOUT regrouping we are going to play a
bingo game.
Say: I have a bingo card for each of you but before we can play you have to
answer all the questions on the card. Its important that you make sure they
are the right answer or else it will be hard to form a line on the card.
Ask: Does everyone Remember the rules of Bingo?
Say: Once you have answered the questions, I will call out one of the answers.
If you have that answer somewhere on your page, you will place a chip on it.
First one to fill out a line in any direction wins! (line, black out, X)
Ask: Does anyone have any questions about what you should be doing?
Do: Give the students 10 minutes to complete the bingo cards
Do: Once students have completed the bingo cards, get their attention and
begin calling out numbers from the answer sheet provided.
Play a few rounds of bingo with a variation on how to win, if a student wins
they have the option to play Beanboozled which allows them to spin and
eat a random flavor of jelly bean.
Do: Invite students to write their names on the bingo sheet and Ill come
around and collect them for assessment.
Assessments/Differentiation:
Circulate the room to ensure that all students are understanding whats
required of them. Provide help to struggling students and check answers to
questions so that the bingo game will run smoothly once everyone has
completed the worksheet.

Learning Activity #3: Jump Math Worksheets

Ask: Before we move on I want do a check to make sure everyone is
understanding what weve been working on. With your Fingers (5 being the
highest understanding and 1 being lowest) show me how confident you are
adding without regrouping?
Do: Take note of the students that feel like they are struggling and focus on
helping them in their Jump Math work books.
If time permits, Students will take out their Jump Math work book and
individually work on the question sheets.
Do: Have students put away all bingo related materials to remove distraction.
Students will turn to page 42 of booklet to complete all questions.
Check over their work and place a check mark in the top corner of the page.
Assessments/Differentiation:
Focus on the students that had a lower number on their hands, work
individually with them on problems.
Sponge Activity: Magic Square Puzzles
On the back table have the magic square puzzles for the students who finish
early and have been checked. Just explain puzzles to students at the back of
the class as needed.
Closure (5 min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning:
Say: Great work today! I was impressed how much you remember about
adding. Lets clean up our areas, put away our jump math books and get
ready for recess!
Feedback From Students:
Say: Now that weve had a little more practice, using your fingers again- show
me how you feel about adding without regrouping. (1 being the worst and 5
the best)
Dont worry if you still arent quite getting it, we will be doing working on this
more so you will have lots of practice!
Transition To Next Lesson:
Tomorrow we are going to work on adding 2 numbers but WITH regrouping!
