Elizabeth Benedict English Instructor UNM
Dear Professor Benedict :
Throughout the duration of this course we have covered many different learning outcomes. Such as Analyzing rhetorical situation, evaluating information, composing documents, and presenting documents. I have gained an understanding with these that I will carry on in my life and professional/academic career. I would define analyzing rhetorical situation as knowing and understanding everything that you are writing about, who you are writing to, why you are writing and how to write it. This was exercised in each assignment this semester, before beginning each assignment I had to have understanding of the rhetorical situation in order to know what I was going to write. This learning outcome just might be the most important due to the fact that rhetorical situation can be used in any type of document, as well as being translated to analyzing situations in general. This learning outcome has taught me to take a step back and analyze whatever it is that I am doing, That in itself is extremely important and universal to a future profession, more school work, and just life in general. Finding and evaluating information can be condensed to simply research. But it is a little more than just research. What makes it different is the evaluating part. In all research evaluating is always the next part. This learning outcome is important because it incorporates finding information and evaluating as one process, as it should be. This was displayed in MWA 3, the recommendation report. We were asked to research and then present the important data that we found for a part of the assignment. In order to find the important information we had to evaluate what we found and figure out if it was relevant or important to the rest of my report. This learning outcome is important because it has taught that everything I find in research is not always useful to whatever I am doing just because it is related. All research needs to be evaluated towards the rhetorical situation in order to find out if it will fit in a document. This can be used for any type of research
that may be conducted in a future marketing position or any research
assignment for the remainder of school. Composing documents was easy to grasp because I have been composing documents my entire academic career so this learning outcome was not new to me. I would describe this Outcome as simply creating a document with its purpose in mind. Composing documents is universal in all genres as well as rhetorical situation, therefore I will always use this outcome. Throughout the semester I was able to practice my approach towards writing each document and then composing them. Presenting documents can be tricky, it is something I have dealt with all my academic career but not something I have been completely comfortable with. I would define the presentation of a document as more than a verbal presentation but as design, format and medium. For this you need to take your rhetorical situation and audience into account. I learned this mostly from creating our website because I had designed it with a future employer in mind so I wanted to keep my site professional. This can also be translated into presentation in general such as yourself. Always take everything into account so that you can present something the best way possible, this is something that I can carry with me everywhere I go. I have learned many things in this class that I will take with me in my academic and future careers. These four being some of the most important. I thank you for your instruction, guidance and time.
