Solution Brief

Extracting Full Value from VMWare Deployments with Panzura

Virtualization provides the means for reducing compute costs and
maintenance by efficiently balancing and allocating server capacity as
needed, creating a low-overhead, on-demand IT capability for providing
compute resources to users. Unfortunately, virtualization also can generate
greater demands for storage, data protection, and data access from
anywhere. By combining VMwares leading virtualization platforms with
Panzuras leading cloud storage platform, enterprises reap the benefits of
a virtualized infrastructure while minimizing storage needs and protecting
that infrastructure with robust, low-cost, infinitely scalable cloud storage.

VMWare NAS Benefits with Panzura

Panzuras Global Cloud Storage System seamlessly integrates all sites of a
globally-distributed enterprise with the cloud while providing local NAS
capabilities and performance across the entire IT infrastructure. Available
in both physical and virtual configurations, the Panzura Controller interfaces
with virtualized applications using standard CIFS or NFS, providing rapid and
secure access to data generated at any site for project collaboration and file
sharing.
the Panzura Global File System complements existing VMware functionality
like VMotion, increasing the value enterprises get from their virtualized
environment. For example, with VMotion, when a VM gets moved from
one ESX host to another, all the services in that VMs ecosystem (e.g.,
permissions, backups, snapshots) must be moved as well. With Panzuras
CloudFS file system, all of those ecosystem services are available to each
VM regardless of where they are moved in the infrastructure, even if to a
completely different part of the world.

Panzura Global Cloud Storage Systems enhance data

availability and protection in VMware environments:
The Panzura Global File System allows all VMs
worldwide to share a common cloud storage
platform for lower cost, greater scalability and global
collaboration and sharing
Panzura Controllers integrate directly with major
backup tools, replacing tape and manual offsiting with
cloud storage accessible from any location
Global deduplication, compression, and encryption
minimize capacity needs and maximize security
protection
The Panzura Global File System provides rapid and
effective DR without the need to maintain a recovery
site or complicated DR plan

In addition, when used as a target for a vStorage API for Data Protection (VADP)-compliant backup or archiving tool like Symantec NetBackup or IBM Tivoli
Storage Manager, Panzura Controllers can take VMDK images, apply inline global deduplication, compression, and encryption, and store them in low-cost,
efficient cloud storage. No more tapes, cumbersome processes, or manual offsiting. All Panzura Controllers share deduplication records, so deduplication
occurs across sites and across VMs, leading to significant reduction in capacity needs. Panzura Controllers deduplication policies also allow administrators to
set the level of data optimization that is applied to different VM image backups.

Step 2: Mount VMDK

Snapshot

These highly-reduced VMDK backups are all available online, to any site in the
enterprise, as needed. Simply take a VMDK snapshot of an ESX server, mount
the snapshot, use your backup tools to backup that snapshot to a Panzura
Controller, and the controller will process the VMDK snapshot, add it to the
Panzura Global File System, and store it in the cloud, accessible by any site.
Recovery is fast and can occur at the original site or at any other site with
cloud access. No separate DR program, secondary site, or extra hardware
provisioning is needed.
