Subject: Visual Arts
Title of Lesson: Gridding

Date: 9/14 /16

Grade Level: 6
Lesson Length: 40 min
each

Overview of the Lesson

Lesson Summary:
In this lesson students will use a gridding system to complete a large mural
one small piece at a time. Students will practice this gridding technique first
on a worksheet. We will reference cave drawings and large graffiti to imagine
when someone might use this technique.
Massachusetts Framework Standards:
1.3 Learn appropriate vocabulary related to methods, materials, and
technique, 2.4 Identify and explore the use of simple shapes of different sizes,
4.4 Produce work that shows an understanding of the concept of
craftsmanship
Lesson Objectives: The students will be able to..
Properly represent an image in an enlarged proportional manner. Students will
each provide smaller pieces of an image to combine with their classmates in
order to create one enlarged image.
Materials/Equipment to be Used in Teaching the Lesson:
Paper, worksheets, pencils, erasers, view finders, pastels, rulers, 3x3 image
Enduring Understandings:
Big Ideas: The students will understand that
Gridding is a technique used to recreate an image.
Using a grid can allow manipulation of the size of the image.
Concepts:
Scale
Grid

Essential Questions:
When might someone decide to use gridding?
How large can an image be represented when using a grid?
Content
Factual Content:
Gridding is a technique used to proportionally represent an image. The scale
at which the image is recreated is easily manipulated through the gridding
system. The grid over the image one wishes to represent and the grid over the

plane it will be represented must be a ratio measurement.
Vocabulary:
Grid, Scale, Ratio, Proportion, Recreate
Tier 1:
Recreate
Tier 2:
Grid, Scale
Tier 3:
Ratio, Proportion
Critical Thinking Skills (Reading, Writing, Speech, Listening)
Identifying how to draw using a grid and how to determine proportions.
Students will demonstrate their understanding of gridding by developing a
drawing which is larger yet proportionally accurate to their provided image.
Assessments (Performance Tasks/Tests/Quizzes Formative/Summative,
Informal/Formal)
Performance task:
day 1
completing the worksheet
accurately and proportionally representing the chosen image
creating a proportional grid
day 2
Completed oil pastel piece
accurately assembled grids,
paper covered with media,
neat product,
proportional,
resembles chosen image.

Action/Instructional Procedures
Procedures: (Day 1)

Anticipatory Set: (hook) Discussion!

*Who has ever drawn on the walls? Did you get in trouble? Who can we think of that has
drawn on the walls before us? What did they draw? Why?
-Cave drawings
-Graffiti
*We are going to create one big image to hang on the wall together. Each of us will get a
tiny square that will match up with everyone elses tiny square. When we are done, all of

our squares will come together to create a picture, like a puzzle! The overall image is
inspired by the idea of cave drawings if they were done in present time.

Step One:
Have drawing of whats on the worksheet on the whiteboard. Teacher gives demo of how
to use the grid.

Step Two: Pass out Worksheets

Step Three: Students work on Worksheets. Hand in when completed/ finish for
homework.

(Day 2)
1. Students receive worksheets from day 1.
2. Teacher discusses/recaps what we did & how it was done
Reproduced small image to proportional larger image
Helpful hints: one box at a time; view finders; find half-way points
in box, dont fine tune until the end
3. Teacher demos how to make grid.
*RULER USE:
*Starts at the first notch NOT AT THE END OF THE PLASTIC!
*flush against the edge of the paper all the way!

Small image: mark a notch on all four edges of the picture where each inch is,
then connect opposite notches
Large blank paper: mark a notch on all four edges of the paper every 2 inches

4. Students who have completed worksheet choose one 3x3 image from bag. And create
grids on paper and image in light pencil.
5. Students who finish may begin outlining shapes as seen in image onto paper.
