Fabric,needle,andthread:
Traditionally,sashikouseslightcolored
threadoverdarkershadesoffabric.
Again,themostpopularshadewasdark
blueorindigo,andwhitecottonthread
wasusedtoworkoverit.Thesedays,
youcanalwaysexperimentwiththe
colorshadeofthefabricorthreadto
applythesashikotechnique.
Thefabricusedpopularlywasandstilliscotton.Tightlywovenevenweave
fabriccanbegoodforsahiko.Thesedays,silkandwoolisalsocatchingupon
popularity.
Thesahikothreadismadeofpurecottonandhasnosheen.Ithasaheavierlook
andismoretwistedthantheperlecottonthread.Ifworkingonacottonfabric,the
sashikothreadcanbereplacedwithperlecotton(#5,preferably)orfourstrands
ofcottonfloss.Ofcourse,differentfabricswouldhavedifferentthread
requirement.Forinstance,whileworkingonsilk,youmightuselighterorthinner
threads.
Traditionally,thesashikoneedleisalmost2incheslongwithasmalleye.This
needlehelpsintakingmanystitchesatatime.Itisbesttoavoidshortneedlesas
thestitchingcanbecometiresomeandtimeconsuming.Trytousealongneedle
withacomfotablyopeneye.
Stitching:
1.Keeptherunningstitchesaseven
aspossible.Anyunevenesswilleasily
beshownonthepattern.
2.Thestitchonthefrontsideofthe
fabricismorethantheoneunder.The
generalratiois3:2.
3.Keepingtheworkingthreadata
lengthof20inchesatatime.Thatwill
helpinacomfortablestitching.

Traditionally,sashikodoesnotallowtostartorendastitchwithaknot.But,fortheeaseofit,wecanuseknots
wherethereverseofthefabricwillnotbeusedorshown.Forfabricswherereversewillbeshown,usethe
traditionalmethodasfollowing:
Considerthatthestitchisworkedfrom
lefttoright.
Notethattheoverlappingofthefew
stitchesiswhatsecuresthethread.
Trykeepingtheendsofthethreadatteh
reversesideofthefabric.
Cuttheendsofthethreadascloseas
possibletothefabrictogiveaneat
appearance.
Beginning
Continuingwithastitch
Ending
Makingturns:
1.Whenthedesignsarereversible,youneedtokeepthebackasneataspossible.Forthisreason,youneedtocut
outthethreadateveryturnandhideitundertheotherthreads.Toacheivethis,followtehsamemethodasyou
wouldtobeginorendastitchtraditionally.(Refertheaboveillustrations).
2.Whenthereversesideofthefabricishidden,youcanturnusingthesamethread.Youcancarrytheworking
threadatthebackoftheclothifthedistanceisnotmorethananinch.Trytoleavethecarryingthreadloosetoavoid
puckeringofthefabric.

CornersandCentres:
Thecornersshouldbekeptsharp.for
this,oneofthestitchshouldfallon
thecorner.Thatis,theneedleshould
eithercomeuporgointhroughthe
cornerpoint.Anyothereffectother
thanwhatisshownintheillustration
iswrong.(Seethedifferentcorners)

shouldlooklikeasinthis

verydifficult.Ifyougothroughthelessons,youwillunderstandandgetanideaonhowtomakethese
designsusingagraphedsheet.(Ihaveusedaprimaryschoolmathematicspracticebookforthegraphs).
Later,youcantracethesedesignsdirectlyontothecloth.Else,youcanmakeagraphonthefabricand
drawthedesignsoverit.
