STEPS THROUGH THE LESSON

INTO (Orientation)

RATIONALE
The skit is a way to hook the students into
the topic that is going to be discussed
(Equal Rights)
The skit should go into depth on not only
this particular part of the Declaration of
Independent, but the document as a
whole.
-

Dress up as a founding father discussing

the part of the Declaration of
Independence that states All men are
created equal, that they are endowed by
their Creator with certain unalienable
Rights
The founding father should discuss his
thoughts, ideas and opinions on the
matter
Discussion question of What does it
mean to be equal should be asked to
lead into the Through part of the lesson

THROUGH (Presentation, Structured Practice,

Guided Practice)

As a class, students will discuss their

thoughts on equality and provide
examples of it in todays world.
Once the class discussion seems to
dwindle down, students will then be
placed into groups of 3-4.
In groups of 3-4 students will read over
parts of Martin Luther Kings speech I
Have a Dream
Group discussion will take place where
students are given a sheet of paper with
discussion questions to help a
conversation to start.

RATIONALE
The topic of equality is important so
students should be able to freely discuss
their thought on the subject
Students will get into groups to practice
their collaboration skills as well as
practice listening to others and their
views
By reading Kings speech, the students
should be thinking about how equality
was then, and how it is now.
The group discussion should expand the
students minds and their thoughts on
equality
-

Students may use the discussion question

sheet only if a discussion is unable to
start
If time, come back together as a class
and discuss what each group talked
about.

BEYOND (Independent Practice)

RATIONALE
The blog will help the learners who learn
best by reading and writing because they
not only read an example about equality
and civic rights, but they will now show,
by writing, what they have learned.
By having quotes and connections this will
allow the writing standard to be met
where students must write in a clear,
concise, and factual manner.
-

Each student will then write an

informative blog on how Kings speech
related to the concept of individual rights
and the Declaration of Independence.
The blog should include quotes from
Kings speech and should have clear
connections to the Declaration of
Independence
The blog should be 2-3 paragraphs
