Ex.7. A man covers a certain distance by car driving at 70 km/hr and he reuturns back to the starting
point riding on a scooter at 55 km/hr. Find his average speed for the whole journey.

Sol.

Average speed =

Ex.8. A man covers a certain distance between his house and office on scooter . Having an aerage
speed of 30 km/hr, he is late by 10 min. However, with a speed of 40km/hr ,he reaches his office 5
min earlier.
Find the distance between his house and office.

Sol.

Ex.9. Peter can cover a certain distance in 1 hr. 24 min. by covering two third of the distance at 4

Ex.11. A man walking with a speed of 5 km/hr reaches his target 5 minutes late .If he walks at a
speed of 6 km/hr, he reaches on time. Find the distance of his target from his house.

Sol.

This is similar to Ex. 4 . Here the difference in time is 5 minutes only. Thus required distance

Ex.12. A boy walking at a speed of 10km/hr reaches his school 15 minutes late. Next time he
increases his speed by 2 km/hr , but still he is late by 5 minutes. Find the distance of his school from
his house.

Sol.

Here, the difference in time = 15 5 = 10 minutes. =

Ex.13. A train travelling 25 km an hour leaves Delhi at 9 a.m. and another train travelling 35 km an
hour starts at 2 p.m. in the same direction. How many km from Delhi will they be together?

Sol.

The first train has a start of 25 x 5 km and the second train gains (35 25) or 10 km per hour.

The second train will gain 25 x 5 km in

25 x 5

1
:

The required distance from Delhi = 12

1
x 35 km = 437

Ex.14. A boy goes to school at a speed of 3 km/hr and returns to the village at a speed of 2 km/hr. If
he takes 5 hrs in all, what is the distance between the village and the school?
Sol.

Let the required distance be x km.

6
x = 6 , Then required distance = 6 km.

5x = 30.

Ex.15. A man takes 8 hours to walk to a certain place and ride back. However, he could have gained 2
hrs, if he had covered both ways by riding. How long would he have taken to walk both ways?

Sol.

Walking time + Riding time = 8hrs (1)

2 Riding time = 8 2 = 6 hrs. (2)
2 x (1) - (2) gives the results
2 x walking time = 2 x 8 6 = 10 hrs.

Both ways walking will take 10 hrs.

Ex.16. A train leaves Patna at 5 a.m. and reaches Delhi at 9 a.m. Another train leaves Delhi at 6.30
a.m. and reaches Patna at 10 a.m. At what time do the two trains meet?

Sol.

By Direct Formula:
(9.00 5.00)(10.00 5.00)
They will meet at = 5 a.m. +
(9.00 5.00) + (10.00 6.30)
4x5
= 5 a.m. +

2
hrs = 5 a.m. +

7.5

hrs = 7.40 a.m.

Note: (10.00 6.30) = 3.30 =

hrs. = 3.5 hrs.

Ex.17. The distance between two stations, Delhi and Amritsar, is 450 km. A train starts at 4 p.m. from
Delhi and moves towards Amritsar at an average speed of 60 km/hr. Another train starts from
Amritsar at 3.20 p.m. and moves towards Delhi at an average speed of 80 km/hr .How far from Delhi
will the two trains meet and at what time?
Sol.

Suppose the trains met at a distance of x km from Delhi .Let the trains from Delhi and Amritsar
40
be A and B respectively. Then, - ( Time taken by A to cover x km ) =
(see note)
60
450 - x

40

=
80
60
60
3(450 - x) 4x = 160 => 7x = 1190

=>

x = 170.

Thus the trains meet at a distance of 170 km from Delhi.

170
Time taken by A to cover 170 km =

hrs. = 2hrs 50 min.

60

So, the trains meet at 6.50 p.m.

40
Note: RHS = 4. 00 p.m. - 3.20 p.m. = 40 minutes

hr.
60

LHS comes from the fact that the train from Amritsar took 40 minutes more to travel up to the
meeting point because it had started its journey at 3.20 p.m. whereas the train from Delhi had started
its journey at 4 p. m. and the meeting time is the same for both the trains.

Ex.18. Running

of his usual speed, a person improves his timing by 10 minutes .Find his usual

3
time to cover the distance.

Sol.

This is similar to Ex 10, but not exactly the same .in this case, the speed is increased and hence
the time is reduced. Whereas it was just opposite in Ex. 10.
You should try to solve this question by detailed method .

Direct Formula for such question is slightly changed and is given as:
Improved time
Usual time =

= 40minutes.

Ex.19. Two guns were fired from the same place at and interval of 13 minutes but a person in a train
approaching the place hears the second report 12 minutes 30 seconds after the first. Find the speed of
the train, supposing that sound travels at 330 meters per second.
Sol.
It is easy to see that the distance travelled by the train in 12 min.30 seconds could be travelled
by sound in (13 min. 12min. 30 seconds) = 30 seconds.
1
:

The train travels 330 x 30 meters in 12

Ex.21. An aeroplane flies along the four sides of a square at the speeds of 200,400,600 and 800

Ex.22. I walk a certain distance and ride back taking a total time of 37 minutes .I could walk both
ways in 55 minutes .How long would it take me to ride both ways ?
Sol.

Let the distance be x km. Then,

(Time taken to walk x km) + (Time taken to ride x km) = 37 min.

=>

(Time taken to walk 2x km) + (Time taken to ride 2x km) = 74 min.

But , time taken to walk 2x km = 55 min.

Time taken to ride 2x km = (74 55) min. = 19 min.

Ex.23. A and B are two stations 390 km apart. A train starts from A at 10 a.m. and travels towards B
at 65 kmph. Another train starts from Bat 11 a.m. and travels towards A at 35 kmph. At what time do
they meet?

Sol.

Suppose they meet x hours after 10 a.m. Then,

(Distance moved by first in x hrs.) +

[ Distance moved by second in (x 1) hrs. ]= 390.

1

65x + 35(x 1) = 390 => 100x = 425 => x = 4

.
4

So, they meet 4 hrs. 15 min. after 10 a.m. I. e., at 2.15 p.m.

Ex.25. A goods train leaves a station at a certain time and at a fixed speed. After 6 hours, an express
train leaves the same station and moves in the same directions at a uniform speed of 90 kmph. This
train catches up the goods train in 4 hours . Find the speed of the goods train.
Sol.

Let the speed of the goods train be x kmph.

Distance covered by goods train in 10 hours

= Distance covered by express train in 4 hours
:

10x = 4 x 90 or x = 36.
So, speed of goods train = 36 kmph.

Ex.26. A man in a train notices that he can count 21 telephone posts in one minute. If they are
known to be 50 metres apart, then at what speed is the train travelling?
Sol.

Number of gaps between 21 telephone posts = 20

Distance travelled in 1 minute = (50 x 20) m = 1000 m = 1 km.

Speed = 60 km/hr.

Ex.27. A man complete a journey in 10 hours .He travels first half of the journey at the rate of 21

Sol.

Let the total distance be x km.Then,

Ex.28. A thief is spotted by a policeman from a distance of 100 metres. When the policeman starts
the chase, the thief also starts running. If the speed of the thief be 8 km. /hr and that the policeman
