Name and Purpose of Lesson

Thank You
Students will discuss what goes into a thank you card to a potential
employer then write one to the person whom they job shadowed.
This unit is extremely beneficial for students because it helps them
engage in career investigation as well as creating a career portfolio for
when they will enter the workforce.

Approx. Time and Materials

Anticipatory Set

90 minutes
I will need:
Blank White Board
Projector
Supplies for thank you card making
Scattergories Category List
Scattergories handouts for each student
Scattergories sample answer sheet
Students will need:
Pen/pencil
Student Warm Ups are posted on the Projector
10 minutes
Choose one word that you believe describes your career choice. Then
write why you chose this word and how it describes your career choice.
2-3 Students will be cold called to share their answer aloud.

How do you intend to engage your

students in thinking during the
Anticipatory Set?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

The strategy I intend to use is a daily warm-up/ Question or thought of

the day and Cold Call
I am using this strategy here because it engages students into the
classroom right away and gives them a brief idea of what the lesson will
be covering in class today. Using a cold call technique will hold every

Procedures

student accountable; as they will all have something for their warm up
in case they are called on to share.
1. Students will turn in their career portfolios at the beginning of
class and/or provide me the link to their E-Portfolio
Chalk Talk: 20 minutes
Method: Cooperative Learning
2. The white board in the front of the class will be blank and
students all have to go up at once and write on the board what
they think should go into a Thank You Card to a potential
employer after an interview.
3. Every student needs to go up at the same time and write
something down even if it is I dont knowthis is to help
students feel more comfortable and confident answering
anonymously
4. After every student writes down something they will return to
their seats
5. Probe discussion with questions What is a common theme we
see up here? What definitely needs to be included? What is
optional to include?
6. This should spark a whole class conversation about what to
include in a Thank You Card
Write Thank You Cards: 20 minutes
Method: Individual Practice
7. Using the supplies in the room or their own, students will write a
Thank You Card to the person that they job shadowed for this unit
8. They need to include aspects that were discussed during the
Chalk Talk
Walk around and make sure students are on task,
understand, and completing assignment.
9. Either you or myself will be delivering these thank you cards to
the person you job shadowed.
Scattergories: 30 minutes
Teaching Method: Game
10.
I will pass out their Scattergories scorecard and review the
rules of the game. Everyone get with a partner at your table for
the two rounds of Scattergories that we will play. I will pass out a

scorecard to each pair. We begin the rounds by rolling a letter
dice, the letter that it lands on is the letter that you will create
answers from for each category that starts with that letter.
Record your answers on the scorecard. Each round will go for 2
minutes. We will then go around the room and read aloud the
answers. Any duplicate answers will be crossed out and not
counted. Players score one point for each answer not crossed
out. The pair with the highest score wins the game.
11.
We will play two rounds of Scattergories, each round
lasting for 2 minutes. Act as a facilitator walk around during
gameplay / Do not probe students for answers so it is
obvious what their prior knowledge is on the content.
1. Students will be instructed to turn in their completed scorecards
so that I can gage their current knowledge of the subject and see
areas of strength and areas of improvement.
How do you intend to engage your
students in thinking during the
PROCEDURE?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

Closure

The strategies I intend to use are cooperative learning and game.

I am using this strategy here because: I am using this strategy here
because a game is a great way to engage all students and have them
be excited about the lesson, I am using a game here as a post
assessment tool to gage student learning in this unit.
I am using cooperative learning as they conduct the chalk talk about
what should go into a Thank You Card to a potential employer.
Snowstorm
10 minutes
Every student will write on a blank piece of paper one take away from
this unit
Something they will remember and keep with them as they are adults
conducting career research.
After every student writes down they will crumple the paper and throw
it in the middle of the classroom.
After everyone throws the paper, every student will pick a random piece
of paper, uncrumple it and then we will go around read it aloud.

How do you intend to engage your
students in thinking during
CLOSURE?
Why are you using it at this point in
your lesson?

Differentiation:
Assessment Reflection: (data
analysis)
How will you know if students met the
learning targets? Write a description of
what you were looking for in each
assessment.

The strategy I intend to use is Snowstorm

I am using this strategy here because: Students can keep anonymous in
this closure and still write down and remember what their main
takeaway is.
For my IEP and ELL students, mainly ELL in this case, I will be sure to
check on them during the Thank You Card aspect and make sure
everything is clear and understood, I will also double check their thank
you cards before accepting them.
Career Portfolio
-Based off the rubric
Scattergories
-Compare students first answers to this round of Scattergories
Gage where there was or was not learning.
What can I do next time to ensure all parts were met of this unit?
Where did students meet the standards?
Where is improvement needed?
