OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:
Grade 6 Shape and Space: Describe and analyze position and motion of objects and
shapes.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
6.8 Identify and plot points in the first quadrant of a Cartesian plane, using whole
number ordered pairs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Procedure

Introduction (4 min):
Hook/Attention Grabber: Show students 2D parametric curves and 3D Torus-Knot. Ask
the students how they would communicate to create this shape to someone? Explain
how math can be used to communicate this and how it transcends language.
Assessment of prior knowledge: Ask students if they have seen grids before, which way
the x-axis runs and which way the y-axis generally runs.
Expectations for learning and Behavior: Tell students that Mr. Baker is being kind
enough to let me teach his lesson so we are going to show him how awesome you can
behave, right?
Advance Organizer / Agenda: PowerPoint (Complete), bring up models of Torus-Knot in
grapher.

Body (27 min):

Key Questions: How do you plot Cartesian Coordinate points? (L.O. #1)
(12 min) Learning Activity #1: Explaining the Cartesian plane.
Discuss that the students have seen the Cartesian plan before.
- Ask the students what is different about this one? (Answer: Numbers)
Ask students about their alphabet and what comes first x or y?
- Explain to them that what reading coordinates it is the same way there are xcoordinates which come first and then there is y-coordinates second. (x,y)
Show students (0,0) and that it is also called the origin (Ask if anyone knows that
before telling them)
Show students how to plot on a grid, be sure to show them x-coordinate first
coordinate starting at (0,0) and counting out on the x-axis while marking it with a
marker ie. (3,0) and marking straight up with a line. Then show y-coordinate by
starting at (0,0) and counting up 4 spaces to (0,4) then draw horizontal line
across. Discuss how the two intersecting lines are our point. (3,4) label on grid
-Do three more examples one being in the negative:
-(2,6), (5,0), and (-4,-2)
Next have students come up and plot first four points with different colours on the
grid:
-(4,6), (0,-1), (-4, 2), (2,5), (-4, 6), (4,2), and (-2,5) Plot remaining three (label
all on grid)
-Connect pictures to make cat face
Assessments/Differentiation: Assessing students placing their points in the correct
location when I call them up to the board.
Key Questions: How can we draw polygons using Cartesian coordinates? (L.O. #2)
Start with a triangle, have the students help you plot a triangle using the same
practices we discussed.
- (2,2), (4,4), (5, 1) What type of triangle is this? Isosceles
Draw random shape with four points, ask students where they want me to put the
coordinates connect dots to make polygon
(15 min) Learning Activity #2: Task: Draw 6 different polygons on your Cartesian
plane. For each Plot each vertices with the X, Y coordinates.
