The university
system explained
Studying at university is a unique experience.
Hereare a few key terms you may come across
if you are considering university in Australia.

Undergraduate

Assessment and grading

Major

This is the first level of study at university,

and usually refers to a three or fouryear Bachelors degree. This may also
include Honours studies, which can take
an additional year, plus there are double
degrees which usually take at least four
years full-time.

Your assessment will vary depending

on the subject youre taking. It can
include things like case studies, group
assignments, class presentations and
exams. At LaTrobe, we use the following
grading scheme:

This is a sequence of subjects that allows

you to specialise in an area that particularly
interests you. You usually take six to eight
major subjects over your whole degree
atleast one each semester.

Postgraduate
A university qualification undertaken
after a Bachelors degree (e.g. Graduate
Certificate, Graduate Diploma,
Postgraduate Diploma, Masters,
Doctorate). Postgraduate qualifications
canbe completed by coursework
orthrough research (see page 38).

Course structure
Our course structure is based on two
13-week semesters each year. Semester 1
usually begins in February and runs until
May, while Semester 2 usually begins
inJuly and runs until October. To see
theLaTrobe Academic Calendar visit:
latrobe.edu.au/calendar/

Most subjects run for one semester,
and full-time students usually enrol
infour subjects each semester. In most
courses, you complete a combination
ofcompulsory (core) subjects, a major,
and some electives. In some courses,
youonly have to complete compulsory
(core) subjects.

Contact hours
Contact hours are the number of hours
youll need to spend in lectures and
tutorials. Depending on what you are
studying, contact hours could be between
12 and 30 hours per week. You will also

information to your entire class. Tutorials
and seminars are smaller group sessions
that are sometimes led by your teacher,

Tutorials and seminars are interactive, and
are your chance to get more information
about lecture material and assignments.

Share housing
Sharing a rented house or flat with other
people is generally the most economical,
flexible and popular form of off-campus
accommodation. You can move into
anexisting shared house, or organise
agroup to establish a new shared house.

Hostels and rooming houses

If you live in a house or property where
theres one or more rooms available for
rent and the total number of people
occupying these rooms are four or more,
it may be classified as a rooming house.
Bedrooms are usually furnished and you
can rent your own locked bedroom

(single room) or share a bedroom with

others (dorm room). You also share
common facilities such as the kitchen,
laundry, bathroom and living areas.
Rooming houses are a good option if you
enjoy living in a communal environment.

Private rental vacancies

This option includes units, flats, houses,
self-contained bungalows and apartments.
Living in a private rental gives you the
opportunity to live independently and
beresponsible for all aspects of your
tenancy. This can be one of the more
expensive options as you are solely
responsible for meeting costs such as the
bond (security deposit), rent in advance,
gas, electricity and water, moving
expenses andfurnishings.

Commercially operated student

apartments
If youre interested in living independently
in a larger complex, with less pastoral
support but with access tocommon
facilities, this may be a good choice.
Rooms come fully furnished and you
have your own bathroom and kitchen
facilities. There are different types
ofaccommodation within apartments,
including:
studio room
one bedroom
two bedroom
twin share (sharing your room with
another person).

Homestay
In a homestay arrangement, you live
as a guest with the host family in their
home. Meals and other support may
beprovided and your room is usually
fullyfurnished. This can be appealing
as it gives you an opportunity to be
supported in a family environment.

LaTrobes excellent international

surroundings, opportunities
todevelop knowledge and gain
experiences, and high quality
ofeducation set it apart from
other education institutions.
Studying at LaTrobe University
is not only a platform for me
todevelop my knowledge and
meet people from every corner
ofthe world, but it is enriching
my world in such a way that
every day when I wake up I feel
much better than yesterday.
