Each group must present their original work.
Plan the task, discuss and understand the problem given, come out with a solution and prepare
your report well.

QUESTION 1
A population of insects in region will grow at a rate that is proportional to their current population. In
the absence of any outside factors the population will triple in two weeks time. On any given day
there is a net migration into the area of 15 insects and 16 are eaten by the local bird population and 7
die of natural causes. If there are initially 100 insects in the area will the population survive? If not
when do they die out?
Hint : grow population model P(t ) P0 e r t

QUESTION 2
Undamped, Forced Vibrations :

A 3 kg object is attached to spring and will stretch the spring 392 mm by itself. The is no damping in
the system and a forcing function of the form

F t 10cos t
is attached to the object and the system will experience resonance. The differential equation in this
case is

mu ku F t
where k

. And the system experiences resonance, the natural frequency, 0
L
m

a) Define a governing differential equation that represents the system.

b) If the object is initially displaced 20 cm downward from its equilibrium position and given a
velocity of 10 cm/sec upward, find the displacement at any time, t.
c) Show the graphic representation of the displacement. (Please use appropriate software)

QUESTION 3
Use Laplace Transform to solve the following system,

w ' y 0
w y ' z 1
w y z ' 2sin t
given the initial conditions,

w 0 1,

y 0 1,

z 0 1.

QUESTION 4
A periodic function, f (t ) is defined by

0
f (t )
t 1 t
f (t ) f (t 2)

1 t 0
0 t 1

(a)

Sketch the graph of the periodic function over the interval 3,3.

(b)

Find the Fourier series of f (t ).

(c)

The Fourier cosine series that you obtained is a representation of the periodic function, f (t ).
From your result, sketch on the same graph, for t ,
(i)

the periodic function and the first term of the sine and cosine series.

(ii)

the periodic function and the first two terms of the sine and cosine series.

(iii)

the periodic function and the first three terms of the sine and cosine series.

Include the graphs in your report. Then, briefly comment what do you observe from the plots?
