Instructional Goal Statement

The fourth grade teachers at Forestbrook Elementary School will be able to:
1. Use Symbaloo as a curation tool to compile grade-wide resources
2. Organize, bookmark, and create categories to effectively organize these resources
3. Create a Web-Quest that exposes students to Symbaloo and its functions
Performance Objetives
Performance objectives will be tracked by the teachers using a checklist and assessed by the
instructor using an analytical rubric which will assess completion of tasks on a scale of 0-2.
I can access Symbaloo using the Google search bar
I can access and view a tutorial for the use of Symbaloo
I can select 6-8 important resources (websites or applications)
I can bookmark these resources by creating tiles
I can categorize these resources by providing a background color for the tiles
I can organize these resources by dragging and dropping them in a preferred
location
We can design a Web-Quest where students can explore the different symbols to
effectively use Symbaloo
I can set Symbaloo as the homepage for Google Chrome and Internet Explorer

Instructional Sequence
The hour long block for instructional time will be broken into three, twenty minute sections to
address the three instructional goals:
1. Use Symbaloo as a curation tool to compile grade-wide resources (20 minutes)
The first instructional goal focuses on using prior knowledge and effective teaching practices to
compile a working list of digital resources that will be used by the fourth grade team. Teachers
will first take five minutes to brainstorm and share different resources that will help to populate
their Symbaloo page, focusing on both the effectiveness of the site as a teaching tool and the
prospect of reusability. Teachers will then access Symbaloo using the Google search bar, where
they will bookmark these resources by clicking on empty tiles to input the resources they chose.

2. Organize, bookmark, and create categories to effectively organize these resources

(20 minutes)
Using the sidebar menu that appears when clicking on empty tiles, teachers will copy and paste
the links to the addresses of their resources, and color code the tiles based on their category for
instruction. (Example categories may be content areas, brain breaks, indoor recess, morning
routines, and so on) Once color coded, teachers will drag tiles to an agreed-upon location on their
Symbaloo site. One device will be connected to a Smart Board to ensure that teachers are able to
place tiles in the exact same locations.

3. Create a Web-Quest that exposes students to Symbaloo and its functions (20
minutes)
Once the Symbaloo page has been finalized, teachers will collaborate to develop a Web-Quest
activity for their students to gain hands-on experience with the tool. The teachers will create a
task card that will explicitly direct students to the different categorized resources that have been
compiled and provide a task for each. Time must be allotted for students to explore the site freely
in order to develop a deeper understanding of its capabilities and to generate interest for students
to use the site on their own. Teachers will conclude the workshop by setting their Symbaloo page
as the homepage on a preferred browser.

Pre-Instructional Activities
Teachers will view and discuss the Symbaloo tutorial, which is provided on the sites homepage.

Strategies for Teaching Each Objective

Each of the three instructional goals will be taught using direct instruction, and the success of
each teacher will depend on the overall willingness to collaborate with peers. The lesson requires
a positive interdependence between teachers, as brainstorming, categorization, and the
organization of resources will be the resulting product of problem solving and critical thinking.
The teachers, once becoming familiar with Symbaloo as a tool, will teach it to their students
using the same instructional strategy, with a task card similar to the one modeled by the
instructor.

Media and Rationale for Instructional Strategies

The materials that will be required for this lesson include an instructor laptop and smartboard,
teacher IPads, dry-erase markers, individual whiteboards, assessment rubric, and I-can
checklist. The instructor laptop and smartboard will be used to model performance objectives
and access of the tutorial for the teachers. Whiteboards will allow teachers to brainstorm ideas

for which resources they should include on their Symbaloo page. The I-can checklist will
ensure that the teachers remain accountable for meeting their performance objectives and allow
them to self-monitor their learning, while the assessment rubric will help to set expectations for
how the teachers will be assessed on the information they have learned.
