The Benefits and Harms of Drinking Coffee
Parikh, Anish. "Clinical Correlations | The NYU Langone Online Journal of Medicine."
Clinical Correlations. N.p., 17 July 2013. Web. 06 Dec. 2016.
This article explained the health risks and benefits of drinking Coffee. It revealed that
Coffee due to antagonizing adenosine receptors in our nervous system, improves humans
attention, energy, memory, and concentration. This article also emphasized on the specific
portion that Coffee must be consumed in order to be beneficial for the human body. It explained
that 65 mg or about a cup of Coffee can alleviate headaches. However, it also said that the
overconsumption of Coffee due to its caffeine can lead to migraines, anxiety, insomnia, and
panic attacks. This article was written by Anish Parikh, who is a first year resident at NYU
Langone Medical Center. This article was also reviewed by Brian Greet, MD, Associate Editor,
clinical correlations. This article informed me a lot of information about the effects that Coffee
has on the body. It was really interesting that how Coffee with all its benefits is also capable of
leading to detrimental effects in the human body.
Notes from the Medical Press. The American Journal of Nursing, vol. 4, no. 5, 1904, pp.
367369. www.jstor.org/stable/3402314.
This article revealed the diverse benefits that consuming Coffee has on the body. It
showed that Coffee detoxifies the body, reduces organic waste, assuages thirst, rouses the
muscular energy, and absorbs the excessive acidity in the stomach that is created due to eating a

lot of proteins. It also explained that Coffee contains certain chemicals that cause addiction, and
may disrupt the normal health of the body. Hence, it explained that Coffee should be consumed
in a very small amount in order to not be harmful. This article was published by Lippincott
Williams and Wilkins and was reviewed by many medical doctors and nutritionists. The article
gave a lot of information in a very concise, and efficient way. Although, it explained the complex
components of Coffee, the language of the article was simple and understandable.
Raloff, Janet. Coffee, Spices, Wine. Science News, vol. 165, no. 18, 2004, pp. 282284.
www.jstor.org/stable/4015293.
This article elaborated on the correlation between drinking Coffee and lowered blood
sugar levels. It noted that certain components of Coffee not including Caffeine have an
antidiabetic effect. In the other hand, it explained that Caffeine by itself increases blood sugar
levels, and human cells eventually lose sensitivity to insulin. This article was written by Janet
Raloff. She has been reporting on science news for more than three decades on science policy,
energy, agriculture, and nutrition. Her writings have won awards from the National Association
of Science Writers, International Free Press Association, and the institution of Food
technologists. Becoming informed that Coffee excluding Caffeine can cure diabetes was really
fascinating. However, because its so bitter its usually consumed by sweets or sugar. Therefore,
its antidiabetic effect is usually decreased.
Poole, Charles et al. Coffee and Myocardial Infarction. Epidemiology, vol. 18, no. 4, 2007,
pp. 518519. www.jstor.org/stable/20486415.
This article explained that there exists a direct relationship between drinking Coffee and
suffering from Myocardial Infraction. Myocardial Infraction or heart attack is the death of the
heart muscles due to prolonged lack of oxygen supply. This article was written by Charles Poole,

Ana Baylin, Sonia Hernandez-Diaz, Edmondk Kabagambe, Xinia Silles and Hanna Campos.
These authors are all highly literate in the field of nutrition and have done a lot of research in this
area. This article truly shocked me. I didn't expect that Coffee with all its remarkable benefits
could increase the risk of heart attack.
Sarabadan, Yassmin. A Day in the Coffee Shop With Parmis. Weebly. N.p., 14 Nov. 2016.
Web. 6 Dec. 2016. <https://www.weebly.com/editor/main.php>.
My conversation with Parmis in the Coffee Shop was the main reason that motivated me
to research about the benefits and harms of consuming Coffee. Parmis talked about her feelings
about the Coffee Shop, and the Coffee that was served. She told me that pure Coffee due to its
excessive antioxidants is highly beneficial for the body. In addition, she told me that Coffee is a
great drink that boosts the metabolism, and increases weight loss if sugar and different kinds of
high-calorie cream are not added to it. Hence, listening to her made me enthusiastic to research
about the effects of Coffee on the human body. Keeping up with the field journals, and notes and
blogs were really useful for giving me ideas about my research; it was also fascinating analyzing
a place for about a semester and discovering its unique characteristics.
