OBJECTIVE

To verify the use of conditions of equilibrium in calculating the reactions of a simple

supported beams.

INTRODUCTION
1.

Fundamental of Newton Law

Beams are structural members which offer resistance to bending duw to applied loads.
Most beams are long prismatic bars, and the loads are usually applied normal to the
axes of the bars.
Beams are undoubtedly the most important of all structural members, so it is
important to understand the basic theory underlying their design. To analyze the load
carrying capacities of a beam we must first establish the equilibrium requirements of
beam as a whole and any portion of it considered separately.
The condition for equlibriu, of a rigid body require that both the resultant force and
resultant couple moment acting on the body be equal to zero. These condition may be
expressed mathematically in vector form as
F = 0
M=0
Where F is the vector sum of all the external forces acting on the body and M is the
sum of the couple moments and the moments of all the forces about any point O
located either on or off the body.

PROCEDURE
1. The apparatus been set as shown as figure 1.
2. The Left RBA set at 0 cm and the Right RBA set at 100 cm.
3. According to Table 1, the load had been place as the Table 1 given.
4. Before placing the load please make sure the Left and Right RBA been set to 0.
5. Repeat from 2 to 3 for another load that given in Table 1.
6. Take the reading on the Left and Right RBA for all the load in the Table 1.
7. For table 2, the Left RBA set at 30 cm and the Right RBA set at 90 cm.
8. According to Table 2, the load had been placing as the Table 2 given.
9. Before placing the load please make sure the Left and Right RBA been set to 0.
10. Repeat from 7 to 8 for another load that given in Table 2.
11. Take the reading on the Left and Right RBA for all the load in the Table 2.

EXERCISE
1. What is the difference between Rigid Body and Particle?
Rigid body can undergo in both translational and rotational motion. While particle can
undergo only in translational motion.

2. What is couple moment? Explain briefly.

Defined as two parallel force with same magnitude but opposite direction and separate
with a perpendicular distance.

3. Give 2 types of beam. Show them in figure.

Fixed beam

Overhanging beam

DISCUSSION
1. Compare experimental and theoretical result.
2. Give 2 factors that could affect the experimental result.
Parallax error. The position of observers eyes are not perpendicular to the scale of

reading.
Zero error. The reading of Reaction Balance Assembly
3. Give 3 examples of supports commonly used. Draw the diagram for each
supports, together with their reactions.

CONCLUSION
The reactions force of a simple supported beams in equilibrium state is analysis and
calculated by using the two equation of equilibrium. The objective is achieved.
