Fly Away
Use stamps and ink to create this
charming pocket-card and wistful
butterfly embellishment
Designer: Nathalie Metivier

Time Taken: 30 minutes

First Steps

Glue a chipboard butterfly to

printed paper from the Magenta
Printemps Passion collection. Trim
around the outline and allow to dry.
Stain the edges with a turquoise inkpad. Stamp the leafy design across
the right half of the motif.
Add gold peel-offs to the other
half, then cut the excess with
scissors. Enhance this design with
glitter-glue then leave to dry. Slightly
curl two straight pins then secure to
the core of the chipboard, each side
of the head of the butterfly.
Cut two squares of different
printed paper. Glue both in the
centre of a white square blank. Cut
a complementary panel to the same
width as the largest square, but 4cm
tall. Glue it to the front using the
bottom three edges to create a
pocket. Add more gold peel-offs
to finish.

Fab Friends

Celebrate the coming of spring as well

as friendship with these pretty blooms
Designer: Franoise Read

Time Taken: 30 minutes

First Steps

Stamp several blooms onto

pastel, pink, lilac and teal card
using black ink. Colour the flower
heads using pencils and add
highlights with the white gel pen.
Trim neatly around the outline of
each motif. Cut a panel, 8cm x
17cm, from pastel pink card. Add
a sentiment along the bottom,
as shown.
Stamp black flower stems and
leaves on either side of the
wording. Mount this section onto
a slightly larger piece of pastel
teal card. Create a white blank,
10cm x 19cm, then stick the panel
on the folded greeting. Sponge
foxglove ink to the letters and
emboss. Arrange and mount
across the panel using foam
pads for alternate letters to give
the project depth.
Stick the flower heads in place
using foam pads. Punch a
number of pastel yellow dots and
secure amongst the letters. Add a
small black flower to a circle,
using it to create the dot of the i.
Punch two holes in the panel then
thread ribbon through and tie off
into a knot.

Full Bloom

Say it with flowers! Simple paper punches

are all you need to build up a bold and
beautiful design
Designer: Jane Gill

Time Taken: 20 minutes

FirstSteps

Cover a blank with paper then,

using the clear stamps, curve the
sentiment and print it around the
swirls on the pattern. Position green
ricrac, then punch out ten cherry
flowers, plus a large circle, from
deep red card. Mark the centre of
the blooms and cut between the
petals, creating individual shapes.
Edge with black ink.
Place them on the moulding
mat. With the etching tool, drag
the needle end flat along the length
several times to create lines and curl
the shapes upwards. Stick them
around the circle, working inwards
from the outer edge. Leave a 2cm
gap in the middle. Punch small
daisies from black card and cut
into individual petals. Etch a single
line down the centres.
Press out a 1 red circle and
apply small blobs of black Fluffy
Stuff all over, then heat. Allow to set.
Stick the small daisy petals around
the edge and position in the middle
of big flower. Attach to the blank.
Punch out several smaller red sakura
blooms and green 1/4" circular
centres, then arrange as shown.

SweetTreats

Hide a recipe book for scrummy

desserts inside this pretty tin, decorated
with bright pink papers
Designer: Jane Gill

Time Taken: 20 minutes

Using the tin lid as a template,

draw a circle onto pink card
and cut out with decorative
scissors. Add dots around the edge
with a fine black pen. Punch a 3"
scalloped circle from pink paper
and stamp little cherries all over.
Colour with marker pens, then
stick in the centre of the lid.
Thread ribbon through a star brad
and glue this on top. Gradually
peel off the backing from felt
fusion and position it around the
edge, as shown.
Punch out a 2" green circle,
then press a 2" scallop disc
from pink. Add dots around the
outside and glue on top. Stamp
an ice cream motif onto white
card using black ink, then shade
in with marker pens. Cut out and

attach to the pink scallop. Add glossy

accents to the cherry and around
the vase. Colour a large tag chippy
with a green ink-pad and add faux
stitching around the outline using
a fine black pen. Edge a smaller
shape with the same colour and
print the greeting.
Tie lots of bright, contrasting
ribbons to the large tag, then
adhere to the lid using 3-D foam
pads. Attach the smaller one with
more trimming. Position the ice
cream circles on top of the label
with foam pads. To decorate the
card inside the tin, cover each panel
with printed paper and rub an inkpad around the edges. Draw on faux
stitching and stamp the greetings, as
shown. Add recipes or summer
photos to finish.

Good Impressions
Learn all there is to
know about getting
started in this
versatile technique
From loving sentiments and
personalised greetings, to
swirling flourishes and adorable
character motifs, there are so
many rubber stamps out there, it
is understandable that a newbie
crafter may feel a little daunted
but don't worry, we're here to
help. This useful beginner's
guide covers the essential
materials and basic techniques to
get you printing like a pro, plus
tips and advice from some of the
UK's top designers.

Getting Started
Before you're ready to go, there are
a few things you need to know...

Stamps are available as woodmounted, unmounted and clear.

Unmounted are often cheaper, but
you will need to purchase a
wooden block. An acrylic one is
needed for clear stamps.

Watercolour pencils and brush markers are

the easiest means of shading your image,
although gel pens, felt tips, inks, chalks and
paints can also be used.

Pigment ink-pads give strong

colours and are ideal for
embossing, while dyebased ones are best
for glossy surfaces.
The other main types
are permanent StazOn
ink and Versamark, which gives a
watermark impression.

Crystal
Clear

With all the different stamps

on the market it is easy to get
carried away, but some work
better than others for
beginners' projects. The clear
variety are ideal as they're
really simple to use. Many are
self-clinging so will stick to the
acrylic block without
additional adhesive. As the
block is see-through, it allows
you to position the image
much more accurately. With
an extensive range of
sentiments, graphics and
illustrations, the possibilities
are endless. Flat and easy to
store, you also get more
motifs in a set than with
mounted stamps, making
them good value for money.

Standing
Out

Simply printing and colouring

images can produce some
gorgeous projects, but if you
want to go a step further, then
embossing is a great
technique which gives a really
professional finish. Place your
work on a heat-proof mat,
then stamp the motif as
normal; pigment-based inks
work best as they are slowdrying. While the image is still
wet, generously sprinkle the
whole area with embossing
powder and shake off the
excess. Clear powder works
best on black designs. Using
a heat gun, slowly move it
around until the powder
melts. When dry it will leave
a shiny, raised finish.

Colour
of Magic
There are loads of different
ways to help bring your
image to life. Inks, pastels
and pencils are all fab
solutions, but for beginners
brush markers are a really
versatile workbox staple. Use
them like regular felt-tip
pens, or why not add a small
amount of water on a fine
paintbrush to spread the
colour around. This is a great
for blending. They can also
be applied directly to the
stamp to allow you to print
in different shades.
Using chalks is another idea
and gives a subtle effect
that is brilliant for
creating backgrounds.

In the Know
Designer and author, Joanna Sheen,
on how to make a good impression
To get an even coating of ink, lay
the stamp flat on its back, then tap
the ink-pad gently across the whole
surface. Hold firmly and press down
onto the card, keeping one hand (or just a finger)
on the stamp at all times. Apply pressure
systematically across the whole image, then lift
from the paper using a vertical straight up
movement to prevent smudging.
CB Designer, Tracey Daykin-Jones
on adding colour
If I am using paints, usually
Twinkling H2Os, to shade a stamped
image, I always heat emboss the
printed motif first using clear powder. This creates a
barrier and stops the paint from bleeding over the
edges. Alternatively, I just stamp the image and
colour in with pencils.

Heart Felt

This card is simple but classic and can be

put together in next to no time by
stencilling on a regular embossing plate
Designer: Lynell Harlow

Time Taken: 20 minutes

FirstSteps

Centre the large heart stencil

onto the greeting using
removable tape. Paste emboss this
design according to the instructions
on the jar. Clean the stencil in water
using a small scrub brush and dry
with a soft rag.
Once dry, reposition it with
removable tape. Tap a small
stencil brush onto the pigment inkpad, then off-load the excess by
tapping the brush away, ensuring it's
not too wet. Colour using a circular
rouging technique. Be sure to keep
the bristles flat against the surface
as you go.
Repeat with a second colour,
using the shield to protect areas
where you do not want the ink to
overlap. Continue stencilling a
different shade for each bloom all
the way around the wreath. Save the
green sections until last.

Material World

Printing stamps onto fabrics is a fantastic way to

create beautiful patterned material. The stunning
purse pictured here was made by printing a butterfly
foam stamp onto cotton using craft paint. The motif
was then mounted onto green felt and the sides sewn
up in blanket stitch. This project was featured in issue
5 of our sister title, Let's Get Crafting.

Border Line

Tapestry stamps are brilliant for creating

trimmings for all sorts of home furnishings, such
as this gorgeous treasure box by sarah Beaman.
Peg-type designs are easy to use in a variety of
formats, such as wreaths and all-over patterns,
making them a versatile and valuable addition to
your kit. Use the motifs as inspiration for the
embellishments and stitches that you use to
complete the project. Here Emma has coordinated beautiful flower sequins and beads to go
with the floral images.

Image
Conscious
Create your own decoupage papers by printing
similar themed images onto white paper. This
stunning treasure box was made by stamping and
cutting out celestial themed images, and then pasting
them onto the surface using decoupage glue. To find
more inspirational projects, take a look at 100 Great
Ways To Use Rubber Stamps by Francoise Read (David

Have a go at transferring your

favourite stamp designs onto home

Box Clever

Surprise your friends with a neat

little trinket that opens up to become

Designer: Jane Gill

Time Taken: 40 minutes

Take three pieces of different

coloured card, 30.5cm square.
Trim one, 28.5cm square, and
another, 26.5cm. Divide each into
nine boxes, score and crease.
Cut the corner squares off the two
smaller panels and keep for later.
On the largest sheet, diagonally
score each corner square towards
the centre and fold the triangles
back on themselves. Open out
and lay flat. Make four, 10cm
squares from coloured paper,
cut in half diagonally and stamp
in black. Adhere to the corners.
Using the biggest cut off
squares, apply double-sided
tape to the sides and base, then
stick to the middle shape to create
four pockets. Make tags to fit
inside from black card and ribbon.
Stick the little squares flat on the

smaller panels. Cut eight squares,

9cm, and stamp. Layer four onto

whipped up in next to no time!
Designer: Franoise Read

Time Taken: 25 minutes

FirstSteps

On a piece of white card,

Gorgeous Greetings
Send stunning cards just to say hello
using this versatile template and
contemporary colours
Designer: Lynell Harlow

Time Taken: 20 minutes

FirstSteps

Lay a blue paper panel in a

cardboard box to protect your
work area. Hold yellow spray ink
eight inches away and apply.
Create larger specks by releasing
the pressure on the nozzle.
Allow this to dry, then attach
the flourish template with
removable tape. Tap the brush
onto the ink-pad, then off-load
the excess into a soft rag. Colour
using a circular rouging
technique. Be sure to keep the
bristles flat against the surface
of the stencil.
Repeat this process for the
hello stencil. Position the bird
template onto a swirl of the
flourish design, as shown. Mask
out all the edges leaving the motif
open. Paste the outline according
to the instructions on the jar.
Mount the completed panel to
a yellow blank.
