Teacher Appreciation
week is the
May 2 - May
5, 2016. The
day is March
7. It is the one
the week that
teachers get appreciated the most. I think that the teachers
are always appreciated. Teacher Appreciation week is said
to start in the early 1940s. The day did not become a national holiday in till March 7, 1980, but the week did not
start in till 1984. I think that Teacher Appreciation week is
one of the most important weeks for the teachers.

ACT Aspire is
Finished!
By Kayla Workman
For the past few weeks we have been taking the ACT Aspire,
and the administration and I have noticed the students of
Flightline rushing on their test. The administration do not
want you to rush or to be in a hurry so you can just talk and
be with your friends we want you to do well on the test. They
would like you to feel like this is your time to shine, and the
time to show
you are a really
smart person.
We as Flightline scholars
are held to high
expectations
and are educated from the
best and now
we need to
show how good
of teachers they
are.

The 2nd annual JLCS
Flightline Career Day
was an even bigger success than the first from what I was told. This year, we actually had too many volunteers, which is a
very good thing. Career Day is a time where we have people with very important jobs that come in
and tell us about what they do. They also tell us about what inspired them as they were growing up to
become who they are now. These positive examples help guide us toward our own positive futures.
These mentors and guides help teach us to be stronger people and keep up our hard work knowing
that one day we too will be rewarded. I asked various scholars what they enjoyed best about career
day? The following are their responses:
People came to the rooms and talked to us about their jobs. My favorite was the nurse that worked
at the hospital. Reagan W.
Getting candy, lawyer. Nevaeh R.
Seeing new and cool jobs. I especially liked the lawyer. Quincy L.
All the people that came to showcase their fantastic jobs. The person that inspired me the most was officer Cardona because he started working his way up to what he is now. -Kylan K.

Career Day

Special Speakers:

By Braden Bodenstein
On Friday, May 27, two guests came to speak about their careers and life journeys: Lt. Col. Charles Spanky Gilliam and Mrs. Nakita Nedd.

Mrs.
Nakita
Nedd

Lt. Col.
Gilliam
Lt. Col. Charles Spanky
Gilliam, son of Flightlines
own Mrs. Linda Perry Dodson, discussed how he got to
his current career as an Air
Force pilot. He was poor as a
child, and grew up in a town with about 4,000 people. Through hard
work and support from the people around him, he was accepted into
the Air Force Academy. Lt. Col. Gilliam has had opportunities that
he might not have gotten if he would have stayed in his small
hometown because he went out into the world and tried. He delivered the message that you have to maintain a good reputation and
build your character in order to succeed in life.
Gilliam said that his favorite place he had ever visited was the
Taj Mahal in India because there was something so magnificent and
beautiful with the contrast of poverty. This made him want to help
others even more than he already had been. He takes great pride in
his career, team, family, and relationship with God. Lt. Col. Gilliam
went from a 1 bedroom house with 4 residents when he was a child
to Base Commander of the Columbus Air Force Base in Mississippi.

Mrs. Nakita Nedd

went into the Air
Force and became an
Airman in the Security Forces. She met
her husband in the military, and they got married and had
two children. Since her husband was in the military too, this
meant that each parent would take turns deploying so that
one of them was always home with their children. Mrs. Nedd
eventually got out of the Air Force to stop the cycle of only
one parent being home with the kids and never getting to see
her husband. While stationed in Okinawa, she got a job
modeling. This led to bigger and better gigs in fashion shows
and advertisements. Resulting in success, she had found her
dream job.

On Friday, April 22, 10 girls attended the Girl Power
in STEM Conference at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway. The scholars did awesome things
and all said they would go back if they could. The participants included Taylor K., Amia J., Agatha V., Marissa A., Abriel D., Dajah H., Adia C., Reagan M., Amara
S., and Elyssa C, and the chaperones were Mrs. A.
Smith and Mrs. J. Clark.
Agatha said she liked that they had fun and got to
meet new people, and that she also learned that girls can do anything boys can do for jobs.
Marissa said that she liked when they went to the chemistry class. Adia mainly liked
UCAs large facility, and learned that if people can come together, they can solve big problems. Dajah really liked all the hands-on activities. Elyssa liked the variety of classes, and
got to learn about snakes. Reagan enjoyed the empowerment of women in the STEM force
that the program promoted. Taylor liked that it was a girls conference where all the woman came together and promoted science careers and research.
Women are capable of anything including planting themselves into Science, Technology,
Engineering, and Math fields. Women only make up 24% of the STEM fields in the
worlds workforce, and only 48% of the workforce in the world. Women like Marie Curie,
her daughter Maria Mitchell, Madam C. J. Walker, Hedy Lamarr, and Jane Goodall were
just some of the first in their fields, but one day we can say we knew important women in
STEM when they went to Flightline Upper Academy in Jacksonville, AR.

Extraordinary Explanations:
Race to the South Pole

By Braden Bodenstein

Because of NHD, I did a paper on

Robert Falcon Scotts Exploration of
Antarctica. Here is a brief synopsis.
Robert Falcon Scott and Roald
Amundsen were racing to the South Pole. Scott represented England and
Amundsen represented Norway. Scotts team was made up of scientists and
British naval officers. Amundsens team was made up of North polar explorers. Scotts team man hauled their equipment. This means they pulled hundreds of pounds, themselves. Amundsens team had dogs to carry their
equipment, and to eat. Scotts scientists wanted to do science, so on the trip
to the South Pole they carried extra
weight of scientific equipment.
Amundsens team only cared about
getting to the South Pole and back,
safely and first.
Amundsen beat the Scott to the
pole. Scott was a month behind. On
the return trip, Amundsen arrived
safely at his home base. Scott and his
colleagues that went on the polar trip
all died. The hype made by Scotts sacrifice for science outshined Amundsens
victory. Scotts science changed the way
Antarctica was thought of forever. So
the question is difficult to answer. Who
really won?

Mothers Day is all about
honoring mother. Mothers Day
was created by Anna Jarvis in
1908. Anna Jarvis had a daughter and when Anna Jarvis mother died with this she made a day
to honoring her mother as a way
for children to honoring their
mother. Then in 1912 a church
adopted Annas idea in mothers day and made it an annual holiday.

The History of
Mothers Day

President Woodrow Wilson signed a measure officially establishing the second

Sunday in May as Mothers Day. Anna Jarvis had originally conceived of Mothers
Day as a day of personal celebration between mothers and families. But once Mothers Day became a national holiday, it was not long before florists, card companies
and other merchants capitalized on its popularity.
By Corbin Howell
Memorial Day, originally
called Decoration Day, is a
day to remember those who
died in service of the United States. While many cities claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day, waterloo New York was declared the birthplace of Memorial Day in 1966 by President Lyndon Johnson.
Memorial Day was born out of the civil war as a way to honor the dead, and
proclaimed by General John Logan. On the 30th every may people would decorate the graves of comrades who died in defense of the country with flowers.
The date, May 30th, was chosen because it wasnt the anniversary of any particular battle. On the first ever Memorial day, general James Garfield made a
speech at the Arlington national cemetery and everyone decorated the graves
of over 20,000 union and confederate soldiers buried there.

The Legend of
Zabiconica: Part 5
By Justin LaBreck
Previously on Zabiconica, Ultranetta eliminated Risokai, Destroyer ran away from Ultranetta, and the heroes was talking about
food and camp. Shadow is ruling 5 the broken
alliance. The final battle starts now.
Come on now, said Agent J. We need to
start planning to take down Razor.
But how, exactly? asked Agent #1.
Wheres Agent #2? They search for Agent
#2. Here he comes. Well here is one of the
members of the alliance, Agent #2.
Please let me go! yelled Destroyer. I want
to talk to Agent J. After a long conversation,
they started their adventure to the base of the
Alliance of Ultimates.
Meanwhile at the palace, Ultranetta confronted Shadow. I know youre here Shadow!
yelled the furious Ultranetta.
Well hello Ultranetta, said Shadow, let me
guess, you want to take down Razor. He had
other plans than to confront you. After that,
Ultranetta had been transported in a cage in
another dimension. Meanwhile, the heroes
and Destroyer are at the main entrance.
Only one can enter, said Destroyer, thats
why I dont leave often.
I will go in by myself! said the courageous
Agent J.
What happen next was too horrible to describe. I will just skip to the ending. Agent J
had won, Shadow had escaped while he can,
and all is well in Zong Yaw. Hoped you enjoyed the series.

THE END
Epilogue:
I had failed you master, said Shadow, I had
defeated my Alliance, but Agent J had defeated me.
You only have one more chance left, said
the Dark Lord, or I will defeat him myself!

The Force
Awakens:
Rey Theories
By Jayde Brignac
Since the release of The Force
Awakens, there
have been many
theories surrounding Rey. For those
of you who dont
know, Rey is a girl
from Tatooine that
finds the Millennium Falcon. Han
and Chewy then
pick her up and
take her with
them. Many people have talked
about who Reys
father truly is. The
most popular three
have probably
been heard of. Either she was born of the force, Lukes
daughter or Leias daughter. Anakin was born of the force,
so many believe that could be possible for Rey. Another is
that she is Lukes daughter. His lightsaber brought memories to her, so she could be Lukes child. This theory also
follows for Leia. Leia is
Lukes sister, and also
born of Jedi blood. This
is a mystery right that
we are all eager to find
out. We have to wait
until Star Wars VIII to
find out!

Did You Know?

Popsicle was invented by accident by an 11-yearold boy named Frank Epperson in 1905. He accidentally left a mixture of powdered soda and water, with a stirring stick, on his porch, and awoke
the next morning to find a frozen pop! Cherry
flavor popsicle is the number one favorite flavor.

Ragtime
Review

By Kayla
Workman
Recently my
family and I went
to a play/ musical
called Ragtime.
Ragtime is
about the troubles of racial tensions, womens rights,
and the immigrant struggles in the 1920s. The play consist of three separate families all in New York City at
the same time but from different places. The first family, is a white family, from Rochelle, New York. As the
play begins we were introduced to the grandfather,
mother, father, mothers brother, and the son Edgar.
This family was a very well to do in life and in upper
class. The next family was a nontraditional black family, a man named Coalhouse Walker Jr., who was a piano player in love with a lovely girl named Sarah, who
is also in love with him. The third family was an immigrant family, they were looking for a better more fulfilling life in America however, the father Tateh was a
widower of his loving wife and all he had left was his
daughter and the hope of his silhouette cart on the corner of a street hoping to get at least one dollar to provide a better life for his daughter.
The play is a musical, and one good song from the
musical is called You are Your Daddys Son. This is
my favorite song, it is very expressive and it shows Sarahs mourning for Coalhouse, while she is telling her
child she is sorry. The words of the song show she is a
human and how she sees Coalhouse in her newborn
son. Towards the end of the play Coalhouse and his
supporters took over the Morgan library after the death
of Sarah, to revenge her death. Coalhouse was a man
and was ready to take his punishment when they told
him he would be put in jail and nothing more. Coalhouse believed them walking out with his hands raised
and was shot and killed. Later there was a scene when
coalhouse and Sarah were reunited but in a better place.
After the marriage of the successful immigrant and the
widowed mother of Edgar the child of Sarah and Coalhouse was raised by the new family.
My opinion of the show is that it was a very sad story
and if you were at the play I can promise you would
have cried at the end. Over all, it was a really good
moral and lesson to learn and I think the actors did a
good job, and I respect them for that.

Rainbows Are Beautiful

By India Wiford
Gay. People say this word all throughout the day. I
hear girls and guys say this, but the way they say this
word is offensive and rude. Guys would say, really
bro, thats so gay or ugh, gay. After people would
say this word, they start to laugh as if it was a joke.
What I want to know is why? Why do people laugh?
Why do they say this as if it was a joke? Its like
laughing at the color of someones skin. We say blacks
and whites are equal and we are all people but we treat
gays or lesbians like their different from the rest of us.
Why arent they equal? Are they not people too? I cannot understand why people would hate or dislike gay people. Some arent used to seeing two men kissing or holding
hands. Some would react by freaking out, pointing, staring, or even yelling at them. But some, like me, wouldnt. If I
wouldve saw two men or two girls kissing I wouldnt do any of that I would just look and carry on with my day because
really, I dont care. I dont care if youre gay or not.

CHRIS BOSH OUT FOR THE

REST OF THE 2016 SEASON
By Connor Rinehart
Since February Chris Bosh has not been able to practice or
play in the NBA because, Chris has had several blood clots
in his knee. That has forced him not to play because his legs
hurt too much. He has had also problems in his lungs like
lung cancer but it wasnt that bad. Doctors were able to remove it.
Chris has used blood clot thinners to stop the blood clots.
They still happen and he is in the hospital for a long time
every time. The Heat have had missed him and they hope
that he returns during the playoffs. Chris said doctors have
cleared him to play in the 2016-2017 season.

Marie McClain:
Teacher, Missionary,
& Future Mom
Extraordinaire

By Jaimee Hall
Mrs. Marie McClain has been a teacher at Flightline for 3 years. In her time she has shot past math
goals, influenced many scholars, been a mother type
for the entire
school, and
served on several mission
trips around the
world, all
while finishing
her Masters Degree. In the next few months, Mrs. McClain will welcome her
son Boston McClain IV, and move to Italy where her husband and pilot Captain Boston McClain III will be stationed.
I sat down with Mrs. McClain, and asked her about her future, and something
she is looking forward to, motherhood. When I asked what Mrs. McClain was
most looking forward to about being a new mom, she responded, laying eyes
on my son for the first time. Mrs. McClain will be taking a break from teaching for a short while, and completing an educational doctorate. I asked her
what she likes the most about teaching. Her response was electric. Mrs.
McClain smiled and said, I love it when a lightbulb goes off for my scholars.
It is always fun to watch them grow throughout the year!
Good luck future Dr. Marie McClain! I think you are going to be a fantastic
mom.

Paging
Dr. Scales

Many of you know Mrs. JoAnn

Scales, one of Flightlines Paraprofessionals and Interventionists. You know
her smile, her hugs, and her positive
attitude that can make you believe that
things will be okay, or that you can do
something. There are things that you
might not know about Mrs. Scales. Did
you know she is a college professor?
OR did you know that you should be
calling her Dr. Scales? Thats right, she is a doctor. Dr. Scales is not the type of
doctor you go to when you feel sick, she has a doctorate in higher education leadership. She started at North Central University, but finished her doctoral degree online from Vanderbilt University.
Better yet, Dr. Scales graduated with a 4.0 from her doctoral school. That isnt like all As in 5th through 8th grade,
that is the big time.
I wanted to know how finishing her doctorate felt, and Dr. Scales told me, I feel accomplished. I can finally say
no more school..but education never stops. I also asked her how long she had to go to college, and if she had
any wisdom for future college students and doctors. Dr. Scales told me that her degree took about four years off
and on. I stopped a few times due to family and health issues, but I never gave up. Thats one of my mottos in life:

7th Grade Nurtures Knowledge About Nature at 4H Center

By Victoria Johnson

The 4H center was fun. 7th grade was able to rock climb, canoe, complete
orienteering, and archery. Orienteering is when you use a
compass to find your way on a
map. It was a fun experience
for people to be able to do
something they have never
done before, and many wont
get to do again. But doing it
with a friend is a lot better and
some people dont get a chance
to go outside as much as we do. The 4H center is an annual trip most 7th
graders will do. The 4H stands for hands, heart, head, and health. The 4H
center is a cool
trip and I hope
that next years
7th graders
will participate
in it to. Also
