Areasemphasizedincludethehydrologiccycleanditsinfluenceongroundwater,
lotic andlenticsystems;theeffectofwateronplantandanimalcommunities;and
lotic,andlenticsystems;theeffectofwateronplantandanimalcommunities;and
theinfluenceofhumanactivityonwatershedstructureandfunction.
Thecourseexploresthebroaderaspectsofwatermovementthroughenvironments
fromrainfalltoitsreturntotheoceansfocusingonecosystemeffects.Most
coursesinhydrologyandaquaticsystemsconsideronephaseofthehydrologiccycle
orwaterasitexistsonlyinthespecificsystem.Themechanismsofhowwater
arrivesordepartsfromthesystemandtheinfluencethismovementmayhaveon
biophysicalcomponentsofthesystemareoftenomittedorcoveredverybriefly.
Thecoursecoversindetailthehydrologiccycle,itsrelationshiptoplantandanimal
communities,andhowhumanactivitiesalterthehydrologiccycleandthustheplant
andanimalcommunities.Thiscourseisofferedasacompanioncoursetohydrology,
limnology,andstreamecology.Thecourseisdesignedforupperlevelstudentsin
bothGeosciencesandBiologicalSciences.
