Technology Enhanced Blended Learning Lesson Plan

Lesson Title: Holla for a Dolla!

Context: This lesson is created to teach students how to count different amounts of money,
figuring out how to combine coins to create certain totals.
Objectives:
-

Students will be able to add and subtract different coins together

Students will be able to create dollar amounts using different combinations of coins

State Standards:
2.MDA.7: Solve real-world/story problems involving dollar bills using the $ symbol or involving
quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies using the symbol.
Materials:
-

Variety of coins
iPads

Procedures:
Introduction (10 minutes) - I will first take attendance in my class. Then, I will start the class my
asking if anyone knows what money is and how it is used in our everyday lives. We will have a
discussion for a few minutes, brainstorming and thinking about why we use money. Then, I will
show them a short video on the basics of coins, called Coins! By ABCmouse. The link for this
video is:
https://youtu.be/aajLkveG750
Teacher Directed (15 minutes) - I will teach the students the value of each coin, and then I will
write several amounts of money on the board. I will have my students figure out what
combinations of coins they would need to reach each amount by using the assortment of coins I
have given each of them.
Collaborative (20 minutes) - I will give each student one coin, and call out an amount of money.
When I yell Go! the students will have to find classmates with coins that add up with their own
coin to create the amount I said. The first group of students to get each amount will each get a
point written next to their name on the board. By the end of the game, the students will get the
amount of points they have on the board as bonus points on their next quiz.
Independent digital work (15 minutes) - Each student will get an iPad and go on the Counting
Coins app. This app gives them four different modes, and they will spend 3 minutes on each
mode, practicing what they have learned during the class. The link for this app is:

Closure (5 minutes) - I will collect all of the coins and iPads, and ask if there are any last minute
questions. I will hand out a homework worksheet with more coin practice for them to do at home
and bring back the next class.
Rationale:
Youtube Video: Coins! By ABCmouse - This video will show students what each coin is called,
what each is worth, and who each depicts. It also connects how the coins are related and can be
combined together, giving the students a sense of what they will be doing in the lesson.
ITunes App: Counting Coins -This app will let the students work with coins on their own and
figure out how to combine them in different ways to get the amount they are looking for. It also
has four different modes: Match the values, Make the total, How many cents?, and Show
values. This will help students work with the coins in various sorts of ways, so that they do not
just memorize one strategy for using them.
