Discourse Community Response
How we communicate in todays society changes as technology progresses, we
have less face to face conversations and more facetime calls, texts messages and
emailing. This all effects the way we communicate in our academic , professional and
family and friends discourse communities. Some benefit from the new ways we
communicate, as it is now faster and easier to get in touch and stay in touch. When
dealing with different discourse communities each have specific conventions members,
genres and topics. Your approach to these communities differ depending on the
appropriate level of professionalism and respect you have for that individual or group of
people
Within my family/friends discourse community the environment is more laze and
informal versus the conversations I would have with my teachers witch is more
professional. For example when I'm asking my friends a question I would simply send
them a text asking it, not worried about grammar or spelling. When asking a teacher a
question I would have to send a formal email making sure its professional and accurate.
When speaking in this discourse community you can express your self more, the people
in this category know you better than anyone this creates a different social environment.
Topics are birthdays, holidays , food, and just checking up on one another. The purpose
of writing about these topics are to let each other know you care, to share information and

stay connected. Goals for this community is to stay connected and keep that family
closeness constant. The guidelines for this community is to respect one another , be
considerate and avoid confrontation.
In the sports discourse community you dont typically write , with an exception of
plays and coach to player emailing. In cheer we are more boisterous and communicate
with the crowd through chants and cheers. The topics are practices, due dates and
competitions. In order to join this community you have to tryout and show the coaches or
judges your skills. The convections in this community is high-spirited , positive attitudes
and team work. This community would not work without team work , this is the glue that
mends the players so that they are able to work together and win.
In my experiences of school discourse communities each year differed as I grew
older. The requirements in 9th grade versus applying to college was completely different.
In order to attend college I had to meet the following requirements ; must have a high
school diploma ,your official high school transcripts, standardized test scores, one letter
of rec and a 200-500 personal statement. Each college professor requires you to read the
syllabus witch all differ in rules, class assignments and expectations. The genre of this
community is usually email, phone call or face to face . You also communicate through
class assignments reports and essays, personal statements and other school related
activities. There are a wide range of topics in this community as each t subject carry their
own topics.
With this in mind it is essential to have a superb understanding of the tools you
need to communicate within your discourse communities. In order to have a clear
comprehension of the difference between personal and professional conversation , you

must understand the severity in tone, voice ,context, genre and convections. This way you
will always communicate in a appropriate manner for that particular community.
