Tutoring 3rd Grade Art

2014-2015 School Year
Description:
This artifact consists of my community service form that I was required to fill out for this
experience in order to graduate. I tutored about 30 8 and 9 year olds for 45 minutes 5 days a
week. As a tutor I was able to help the professor with the students, and making sure that they
stayed on track, as well as had an understanding of what they were doing.
Wisconsin Teaching Standard Alignment:
This experience best aligns with standard 10: Collaboration- The teacher fosters relationship
with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support students
learning and well-being.
This best aligns with this standard because through tutoring I was able to make connections with
the other art teachers to learn how they taught their lesson plans, as well as how to best help their
class. I was also able to do some of the work that involved connecting with other teaches
throughout the school, and occasionally I was able to help with talking to parents during
orientations and other events. Through this experience I had the opportunity to work with many
new people and get an understanding of what teaching really is about. I was able to watch the
progression of many students as well as help any students who were having a hard time or
needed just a simple boost of courage.
UW-Platteville Knowledge, Skill, Disposition Statement Alignment:
This artifact best aligns with KSD4.d: Contributes to the School and District- The candidate is
able to assume a leadership role among colleagues and is supportive and cooperative with
peers volunteers, and serves as a participant and leader in school events and district projects.
This KSD best aligns with my experience because I was able to make many connections with
members of faculty across the school, and even across the district. My experience gave me the
opportunity to meet and learn what it feels like to become a teacher, and how you should be able
to contact and maintain close connections with the staff. During this experience I was able to
play the role of an educator. Although I may have not initially taught them the lesson, I was able
to reteach, and encourage what they learned. Tutoring third grade gave me the opportunity to
connect with many other staff member, which in result showed me the importance of connection
as a teacher.
Secondary KSDs:
KSD4.a Reflects on Teaching
KSD4.e Grows and Develops Professionally
KSD4.c Communicates with Families
Reflection;

Through this experience I learned that in order to keep a maintained teaching environment it is
important to collaborate, and communicate with the faculty of the school and the district, as well
as to communicate with parents. Like I mentioned in explaining standard 10 I was able to have
an opportunity where I could speak with the parents, and explain to them what my position at the
school was, and how I was going about tutoring the art class. I also mentioned that I was able to
collaborate and speak with many of the other members of the staff like I discussed in KSD4d. I
learned that although it may look like a teachers job is simple, and like they can do whatever
they want, that is not the case. I was able to look at this experience from a teachers view, and see
the standards you have to meet and what has to get pre-approved by the district before something
can be taught. I also took this experience to officially acknowledge that teaching is what I want
to do as a career, and that I have the possibility and means to do it.
