Kirsten West Savali speaks on how the media is painting an image of stereotypes,
misconceptions, and over criminalizing African Americans. She speaks on how media has taken
the victim (African Americans) and turned them into criminals. She also talks about how media
is influencing the minds of society. So now society is starting to pick up on their stereotypes.
Media has a huge impact on the world and is the source of a lot of information. If society
constantly sees these negative images, society will start to believe it. It is shown in the statistic of
approximately 88 percent of white Americans have a racial bias against black Americans.
This article supports my research and my thesis about the medias image of African
Americans. It supports my views and gives examples that back up my theories. My audience
should find her information interesting and very similar to mine. The information is fact and
supported by a series of examples to inform people of the injustices of media.

This book gives examples of black shows that were on television. It gives examples of
the ones that give negative and positive images of black people. It talks about the Cosby show

and the Fresh Prince of Bellair. It also gives background information on the history of African
American television. It speaks on African American media as a whole and its impact on the
world.
This helps my research by giving me examples of how black television should be
celebrated. It also gives me examples of how African Americans should be talked about and
gives me the solution to the problem. This speaks on African American media in the positive way
and how they are taking control of their image.

Stephen Balkaran talks about how mass media has a racist view of African Americans.
He uses examples of the Los Angeles Riots and the purpose behind them, which is The Rodney
King Story. He concluded his paper with statistics that show high-income levels in black families
and how the high school drop out rate lowered.
This helps my research and gives more examples to back up my theories. It shows how
racism in media is not just a recent event, it has been going on for years. His paper also brings in
the segmentation theory, which explains racism from an economic point of view. This is saying,
exploit the black culture for profit and ratings.

Punyanunt-Carter, Narissra M. "The Perceived Realism of African American Portrayals on

Television." Howard Journal of Communications 19.3 (2008): 241-57. Web.
This document gives the various roles that African Americans play on television. It gives
different examples of how these roles were played out. An example of these roles is

occupational. They did research on how these roles were depicted on tv. The occupations for
African Americans were servants, cooks, entertainers, and more low level jobs. For a white
person on television they had more elevated high level jobs. They also give examples of positive
stereotypes of African Americans.
This supports my research by giving concrete examples of how African Americans are
depicted on television. It is research backed up on facts that show the different roles they play on
television and how some of them are very negative and others can be positive. It is overall more
negative imaging of African Americans

This article is about African American males and their image in the media. It talks about
how they are looked at as criminals and thugs. It speaks on how African American males are only
portrayed as either an athlete, as comedic relief, over-sexed ladies man, bad father, or violent.
They are never portrayed as something positive in media.
This supports my theory of how African Americans can never have a positive image in
the media. It educates my audience of the negative image media puts out there.
