HEADER HEIGHT CONTROL VALVE DIAGNOSTICS

DESCRIPTION
Many of the faulty Header Height Control (HHC) valves that dealers returned do not show any fault when NEW
HOLLAND tests these HHC valves.
In fact, the HHC valves did not require replacement.
In many cases, the replacement of the HHC valve happens because of the un-commanded lowering of the header.
NEW HOLLAND advises you to lower the header or the feeder to the ground when you leave the unit overnight.
Before you replace the HHC valve, it is very important to perform the proper diagnostics to define the correct root
cause, either :
A failed HHC valve
1

19 June 2015 999-071144A-LD116 EN

OR
A different issue
The intention of this bulletin is to provide with the necessary steps to define the correct root cause. Follow the listed
steps below:
A. Check the lowering rate of the header lift cylinders. The HHC valve has an allowed leakage of 3 mL ( 0.10 US
fl oz ) per minute. See the table further below for the allowed drop rate for each header lift-cylinder diameter.
B. Measure the header lift cylinder static pressure to determine if the header is not too heavy or to determine if the
header lift cylinders are not suitable for the application. (machine execution)
C. Flush the header shock valve . (port 2.1 on the main valve block, just above the HHC valve)
D. Flush the HHC valve.
E. Measure the setting of the header shock valve. Correct the setting if necessary.
F. Only for hillside combines: Disconnect the pressure relief valve that links the rear lift cylinders with the header
lift cylinders.
When the HHC valve requires replacement under warranty, add the info below to an ASIST report and/or the warranty claim:
Header type - header size header weight
The amount of header lift cylinders and the diameter of the header lift cylinders
The measured header leak down: How many millimeter did the header lift cylinder retract after 10 minutes with a
lifted header and a shut-off engine
Header shock valve setting

SERVICE
A. Determination of the leakage through the HHC valve
The HHC valve has an allowed 3 mL ( 0.10 US fl oz
) internal leakage. Below you will find the procedure to
determine if the drop of the header is within specification. When the drop of the header is not within specification, proceed with the detailed steps in this service bulletin.
1. Lift the header fully up.
2. Switch of the engine.
3. Apply the parking brake.
4. Measure the distance (X) between the cylinder body
and the feeder pin (see Figure 1 ).
5. Re-measure the distance (X) after 10 minutes.

B. Measurement of the static pressure of the header lift cylinder

The header shock valve protects the hydraulic system against pressure peaks. The header shock valve has a setting
of 210 bar ( 3045 psi ) . When you drive the unit over bumps, it is possible that the header shock valve frequently
opens when the static pressure of the header lift cylinder is above 160 bar ( 2320 psi ) . The opening of the
header shock valve causes the un-commanded lowering of the header.
1. Where to find the pressure reading for the header lift cylinder:
On TC series Comfort cab combines: Go to Combine info => Header => Header lift pressure in the InfoView
II monitor.
On CX5000 and CX6000 combines: Go to Combine info => Head 1=> Header pressure in the Intelliview III
monitor and the IntelliView IV monitor.
On CX flagship combines and CR flagship combines: Go to Combine info => Header => Header lift pressure in
the monitor.
2. How to determine the static pressure of the header lift cylinder:
Start the combine.
Let the hydraulic oil warm up.
Lift the header until the cutter bar is 30 cm ( 11.8 in ) from the ground.
Check the pressure of the header lift cylinder on the monitor.
The pressure should not exceed 160 bar ( 2320 psi ) with the header 30 cm ( 11.8 in ) above the ground.
When the pressure exceeds 160 bar ( 2320 psi ) , the pressure spikes while you use the automatic HHC can
cause the header shock valve to frequently open.
When the static pressure of the header lift cylinders exceeds 160 bar ( 2320 psi ) the header is too heavy. Dependant on the model, you can lower the static pressure with the installation of one of the two following options:
An additional header lift cylinder
OR
A header lift cylinder with a bigger diameter
See below the available options:
For CX5000 and CX6000 combines there is a third header lift cylinder kit available as Dealer Installed Accessory
(DIA). See the parts catalogue for the reference.
For CX5090 Laterale and CX6090 Laterale, there currently is no third header lift cylinder kit available.
For TC combines there is a third header lift cylinder kit available as DIA. See the parts catalogue for the reference.

19 June 2015 999-071144A-LD116 EN

For CX combines and CR combines, there is the possibility to install a header lift cylinder with a bigger diameter.
See the parts catalogue to confirm if it is possible to install the header lift cylinder with a bigger diameter.
ATTENTION: Never exceed the specified maximum allowed header weight for your model.
When the static pressure does not exceed
valve diagnostics.

160 bar

( 2320 psi ) , proceed with paragraph C. Header shock

C. Header shock valve diagnostics (Part number: 87657059 or 84483804 )

When there is a pressure peak in the HHC system
the shock valve absorbs the pressure peaks to protect the
HHC system against damage.
NOTE: The header lift hydraulic circuit contains a hydraulic accumulator to absorb the normal pressure variations.
You can find the header shock valve at port 2.1 on the
main hydraulic valve block. Look for the stamped 2.1 on
the main hydraulic valve block.
For CX5000 and CX6000 , see Figure 2 . The header
shock valve port 2.1 is in front of unloading tube elbow.

For TC combines, see Figure 4 . The header shock valve

port 2.1 is above batteries.

C. Flushing procedure for the header shock valve

1. Remove the header from the combine.
2. Lower the feeder to the lowest possible position.
3. Engage the parking brake.
4. Put the gearshift in neutral.
5. Shut off the engine.
6. Remove ignition key.
7.

Mark the position of the set screw (1) for later reference.

8.

Use a spanner to loosen the nut (2) of the header

shock valve.

9.

Unscrew the set screw (1) one turn.

10. Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle speed.
ATTENTION: Make sure to comply to the following
conditions:
No one is around the combine
Engaged parking brake
The gearshift is in neutral position

11. Attempt to lift the feeder. The oil will pass through the
header shock valve. As such, the passing oil flushes
the header shock valve.
12. Operate the header up function for +/- 30 s .
13. Put the shock valve back to the normal state. Screw
in the set screw (1) on turn. Tighten the nut (2) to
lock the set screw (1) .
14. Proceed with paragraph D. HHC valve flushing procedure.
D. HHC valve flushing procedure
1. Remove the header from the combine.
2. Lower the feeder to the lowest possible position.
3. Engage the parking brake.
4. Put the gearshift in neutral.
5. Shut off the engine.

Start the engine. Run the engine at low idle speed.

ATTENTION: Make sure to comply to the following
conditions:
No one is around the combine
Engaged parking brake
The gearshift is in neutral position

9.

With the engine at low idle speed, press the two flush
valves simultaneously for 30 s to flush the header
lower valve and the header lift valve. Ask assistance
to make sure that no one activates any functions or
controls inside the cab.
NOTE: The feeder should not move as the header
lift valve and header lower valve are both open.

10. After the flushing process, reinstall the two protection

caps (3) on the solenoids. (Figure 7 )
E. Check the header shock valve, correct if necessary.
ATTENTION: Make sure that no one is near the header
and/or the feeder during the below procedure.
1. Start the combine.
2. Let the hydraulic oil warm up.
3. Install a pressure gauge of 0 - 250 bar ( 0 - 3625
psi ) onto the reel lift circuit.
4. Fully lift the reel. Measure the generated oil pressure
while you continue to operate the reel lift function.
The oil pressure should be:
205 bar ( 2972 psi +/- 5 ) for CX5000 combines,
CX6000 combines, and TC combines
215 bar ( 3118 psi +/- 5 ) for CX combines and
CR combines
5. Disconnect the feeder angle sensor.
6. There are two options to measure the header shock
valve setting:
Install a pressure gauge of 0 - 250 bar ( 0 - 3625
psi ) in the header lift circuit.
OR
6

19 June 2015 999-071144A-LD116 EN

Check the header lift pressure in the monitor. See

paragraph B. Measurement of the static pressure
of the header lift cylinder.
NOTE: The recommended option is the installation of
the pressure gauge as the reading is more accurate.
7. Fully lift the header.
8. Measure the generated oil pressure while you continue to operate the header lift function.
9. An oil pressure below 205 bar ( 2972 psi +/- 5 )
indicates an incorrectly adjusted header shock valve.
NOTE: On Hillside combines, the measured pressure
should be 190 - 195 bar ( 2755 - 2828 psi ) as
there is a pressure relief valve that links the header
lift cylinders with the rear longitudinal lift cylinders in
parallel. See further down in this service bulletin
Proceed as follows to adjust the header shock valve setting:
10. Loosen the nut (2) .
11. Adjust the set screw (1) to adjust the oil pressure
setting of the header lift circuit to 205 bar ( 2972
psi +/- 5 ) . Turn the set screw an additional 1/4 turn
clockwise to make sure that the pressure setting of
the header shock valve is higher than the setting of
the main hydraulic pressure-relief valve.

BAIL15SBA0330AA

11. When the header still leaks down with a correctly

adjusted header shock valve, it is possible that the
header shock valve is the root cause for the un-commanded lowering of the header.
12. Remove the header shock valve from the combine.
13. If possible, disassemble the header shock valve.
14. Check the header shock valve for damage.
15. Clean the components.
16. Reassemble the header shock valve.
17. Reinstall the header shock valve on the combine.
When the HHC valve requires replacement under warranty, add the info below to an ASIST report and/or the
warranty claim:
Header type - header size header weight
The amount of header lift cylinders and the diameter of
the header lift cylinders
The measured header leak down: How many millimeter
did the header lift cylinder retract after 10 minutes with
a lifted header and a shut-off engine
Header shock valve setting
Static pressure of the header lift cylinder
7

19 June 2015 999-071144A-LD116 EN

F. On Hillside combines only:

There is a pressure relief valve in parallel with the header lift cylinders that connects with the rear longitudinal lift
cylinders.
1. TC5080 Hillside : the pressure relief valve is part of
valve 84032810 . The pressure setting of the pressure
relief valve is 190 bar ( 2755 psi ) .
2. CX5090 Hillside : the pressure relief valve 84464006
has a pressure setting of 195 bar ( 2828 psi ) .
When you do not reach the 205 bar ( 2972 psi +/5 ) setting in the above described procedure, but only
read 195 bar ( 2828 psi ) this is because the rear
longitudinal lift cylinder pressure relief valve opens earlier
which is normal.
When the header shock valve and consequentially also
the pressure relief valve of the rear longitudinal lift cylinder
do not reach 190 - 195 bar ( 2755 - 2828 psi ) ,
adjust first the rear longitudinal pressure relief valve to the
correct value.
