Annotated Bibliography on the Importance of Vaccinations during Childhood

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website provides information regarding
how vaccines prevent diseases. Their goal is to aid parents in the decision-making
process of whether their child should receive a certain vaccine or not. The website
informs parents that vaccines help develop immunity by imitating an infection. They
also include that the imitation infection does not cause illness. However, the imitation
infection can cause the immune system to react in the same way it would react to the real
infection so the body can recognize and fight the vaccine-preventable disease in the
future. This particular source would assist in my research by providing a reference to
what vaccinations do to the immune system. It would provide details on how vaccines
develop the immune system and help it to prevent future disease and infection.

The Department of Health of New York States post on vaccines and immunizations
discuss the benefits vaccinations offer and how they are the safest way to protect oneself
against many different infections and diseases that can be life-threatening to not only
children, but people of older ages as well. Some infections and diseases this website

listed include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Influenza, measles, mumps, polio, shingles, and
tetanus. The Department of Health of New York State was sure to emphasize how
important it is to receive vaccinations at the proper time so that you are protected against
the listed infections and diseases, as well as many others. This source assists in my
research by providing insight of all of the infections and diseases that vaccinations can
prevent.

The article entitled Impact of Vaccines Universally Recommended for Children - United
States, 1990-1998 highlights the death toll of patients who had contracted infectious
diseases such as measles, smallpox, and diphtheria between the years of 1900 and 1922
before vaccinations were discovered. The number of deaths ranged from approximately
800 to 7,600 people. After vaccines were made available for wider use, there was a
decline in [mortality] from nine vaccine-preventable diseases and their complications smallpox, along with the eight diseases for which vaccines had been recommended for
universal use in children as of 1990. This source will contribute a reference to the
history of vaccinations in my research.
James, Susan, Kristine Nelson, and Jean Ashwill. Nursing Care of Children: Principles and
Practice. Elsevier Health Sciences, 2014.
The book entitled Nursing Care of Children: Principles and Practice discusses the main
purpose of vaccinations and their potential side effects. The authors explain that the
primary purpose of vaccinations is to achieve immunity with the fewest possible side

effects. They go on to say that generally most vaccinations have little to no side effects.
However, when there are side effects, the most common ones that appear after
administration are fever and irritation. In some cases a rash can even occur. This source
will contribute information regarding the main purpose of vaccinations. It can also give
reference to the side effects caused by receiving vaccines.
Sears, Robert. The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child. Little Brown,
2011.
The goal of the author of The Vaccine Book: Making the Right Decision for Your Child
was to aid parents in the educated decision of whether they should or should not
vaccinate their child or children. Sears discusses how he believes vaccinations have
played a role in limiting or eliminating many very serious infectious diseases, but also
understands that vaccines do carry some risk. this particular source will assist me in my
research by providing insight on the advantages, as well as the disadvantages of having
your child vaccinated. When researching the advantages and disadvantages of having
your child vaccinated, this source would be a very helpful reference.
