Geometry
Triangle Congruence
2

In this unit, students will use their knowledge of congruence to explore congruent triangles and properties of
triangles. They will use the definition of congruence based on isometric transformations ( from unit 1) to
prove congruence criteria postulates and theorems. They will use those congruence criteria to identify,
name, and prove triangles congruent.
Students will be introduced to formal proofs in this unit. They will learn proofs by diagram/flowchart which
will lead into two-column proofs. More advanced students will also be given the chance to write paragraph
proofs. In proof-writing, students will learn the basics of logic theory, conditional statements, and truth
tables.
Students will learn and prove properties of triangles including the Interior Angle Sum Theorem, the Isosceles
Triangle Base Angle Theorem, and the Exterior Angle Theorem. They will apply these theorems to solidify
their understanding and practice their algebra skills.
The overarching theme of this unit is: How can I use what I know to prove new things? This is a valuable skill
both in math and across curriculum.

Students will understand what makes a sequence of statements mathematically logical.

Students will be able to articulate proofs verbally, visually, and in written format.
Students will know how to put their knowledge into conditional statements.

G.CO.B.7: Use the definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions to show that two triangles are

congruent if and only if corresponding pairs of sides and corresponding pairs of angles are

definition of congruence in terms of rigid motions.

A.CED.A.1: Create equations and inequalities in one variable and use them to solve problems.

Week by Week Overview

Week 1: In this week, students will take their knowledge of congruence and isometric transformations and apply it to separate triangles. They will
prove SSS, SAS, ASA, and AAS/SAA. They will work on marking triangles as congruent using these statements. They will also write congruence
statements in which corresponding parts line up. This will ease them into CPCTC proofs later in the unit.
Week 2: In this week, students will explore the four cases of SSA and determine which cases can be used as congruence criteria (HL and S1<S2).
Students will continue to practice matching congruence criteria with pairs of triangles. They will also move into working with triangles that
are connected (have overlapping parts, vertical angles, shared sides, etc.) and applying their prior knowledge in the context of triangle
congruence.
Week 3: This week will be spent introducing students to the concept of a formalized proof. Students will begin with oral proofs, explaining how they
know triangles are congruent. After that, they will move on to using ProofBlocks to diagram their proofs. ProofBlocks manipulatives allow
students to trace their statements back to the picture and the givens. Once students are comfortable using ProofBlocks to diagram proofs,
they will take those diagrams and write two-column proofs with numbered statements and reasons. The proofs will follow the order of the
congruence criteria being used. In this week, students will work with separate triangles, vertical angles, the reflexive property, triangle pairs
with parallel lines, and overlapping triangles, beginning with proof diagrams and moving into two column proofs.

Week 4 (Thanksgiving week): This week students will practice two-column proofs by proving the Interior Angle Sum Theorem for triangles. They will
practice algebra skills in setting up and solving equations for angle measures and other variables.
Week 5: The final week of the unit will focus on properties of triangles: proving and applying them. This includes mid-segments, isosceles triangles, and
the exterior angle theorem. For each theorem, the students will work together to prove it and then practice algebra skills in applying it. The
week will end with the unit summative assessment.

Students will write reflections on their proof-writing skills. They will also write their own definitions for various
terms and will write their own set of conditional statements to practice logic theory.
