Lesson Duration: 60Mins

OUTCOMES FROM ALBERTA PROGRAM OF STUDIES

General Learning Outcomes:

Shape and Space

Specific Learning Outcomes:

8. Identify and plot points in the first quadrant of a Cartesian plane, using whole number
ordered pairs.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will:
1. Create shapes using plotted points on a grid
2. Understand how shapes can be represented through key points
3. Demonstrate confident understanding of the basics of ordered pairs

ASSESSMENTS
Observations:
Students feeling confident and having fun with
the games
Written/Performance Assessments:
Worksheet and game sheet

Key Questions:
How can we use ordered pairs to create and find shapes

PROCEDURE
Introduction (_10_min.):
Hook/Attention Grabber: We did a really good job on the ordered pairs yesterday, so we are going to practice it a little
today, and play a game at the end with this.
Assessment of Prior Knowledge: So just to review quickly, who can tell me the ordered pair for here [Plot a point on
the grid]. What do we do first? Second?
Okay, now who can come up and plot this point? [(4,3)]
Now lets try and remember. If we change the numbers to multiples of 5 [Change to new graph]. And we plot a point
here [30,35]. What is it? If we count [Count to 6, then 7]. Does that mean its 6,7? What is it?
Who can come up and plot this point [45,20]?
Now if we make a square here, what are the points? (Label the points A, B, C, D)
So if you had some trouble yesterday, I want you to grab a white board and come to that table by Mr. Gilsons desk,
and I can help you. Otherwise I want you to work on this sheet. Can I get two volunteers to hand this out?
Expectations for Learning and Behaviour: If you finish your sheet, please wait for me to finish helping people at the
back table
Advance Organizer/Agenda:
Transition to Body: Okay once you get your sheet you can start working on it.

Body (_45_min.):
Learning Activity #1: Worksheet D
Assessments/Differentiation: Students having trouble with the basics can come work on it at the free table with me
Do you guys know what a pentagon is? A pentagon looks like this [Draw a pentagon on the board]. For question 2, make sure you
keep your points on easy to read points, not in between lines.

Learning Activity #2: Find the Shapes

Assessments/Differentiation: Alright so Im going to introduce the game you guys will be playing today. [Bring up grid on the
smartboard]. Ive hidden 3 shapes on this grid. I want you guys to call out ordered pairs to check and see if there is a point on here. I
will let you know if you hit a mark. For example: (2,3) means right here.
[Continue until the shapes are found]

Learning Activity #3: Find my Shapes

Assessments/Differentiation: If there is an odd number, we can have a group of 3, where each player asks one player and is asked
by a different player. Last one standing wins.
So now that you guys understand how to play, Im going to give you sheets to play with a partner. I want you to hide three shapes
on your board, only 3-4 points. Which means it can be a triangle, square, rectangle, diamond, parallelogram, trapezoid, whatever.
As long as its only 3-4 points. Once you are ready, you take turns calling out points, if yours is hit you must tell them. If they find a
whole shape, you have to tell them and show them how to connect them, like I did. Whoever finds all the others shapes first wins.
Does everyone get this? Okay you can find a partner and start.

Closure ( _5_min.):
Consolidation/Assessment of Learning: Okay so do you guys feel ready for a checkup? Need more practice?
Feedback From Students: Was the game fun today?
Feedback To Students:
Transition To Next Lesson: So all your game sheets and work sheets can go in the recycling, tables cleared off, before
anyone can get ready for recess.
