CCS Art Ed Format for Standards Based Lesson Plan

Title of Lesson:
Grade 5
Danielle Birbal

I. Standards and Benchmarks

They should already have an understanding of what spiders and spider webs look like.
II. Outcomes:
(SWBAT) Students will be able to:
VA:Cr1.2.PKa
Engage in self-directed, creative making.
VA:Cr1.2.2a
Make art or design with various materials and tools to explore personal interests, questions,
and curiosity.
VA:Cr1.2.1a
Use observation and investigation in preparation for making a work of art.
III. Anticipatory Set/Motivation:
The Spider and the Web childrens book, examples of spider webs/spiders, teacher/student
examples, spider bookIV. Model the Process:
Criteria: 8 X 11 black construction paper, black pipe cleaners (new needed for the length
of the pipe cleaners), Using white on black.
Task Analysis: how to clean up chalk/charcoal, how to pull string enough so that it snaps,
how to blow the excess chalk off and not rub, how to twist pipe cleaners, an understanding
of gravity (bending the legs to keeps beads from falling as well as how to make the bending
look like natural joints on a spider). How to use tacky glue. How to use scissors. How to
count. Color coordination.
Vocabulary: chalk, spiders, spider webs, curve, press, snap, spray adhesive (hairspray)why do we use it, pipe cleaners,
Materials: tape, string, chalk, white charcoal pencils, black paper (10X10), hairspray, scrap
paper, black pipe cleaners, tacky glue, scissors, different colored beads.
Demonstration: 3 WEEKS
WEEK 1
-5 Min

Brain Excersise- Have the children stretch and breath before sitting

-15 Min

Read The Spider and the Fly While reading talk about spiders and what they are/do
as an insect

Provide examples of spiders and spider webs

Show personal work and student work

Demonstrate what the project is- Using black 10X10 paper, tape corner of paper tot
he edge of the desk. After securing the paper, also tape a piece of string to the topleft corner of the paper/table. Stretch out the string, rub white chalk onto the string.
Stretch and angle the string, snap the string onto the paper and it will create an
imprint of it through the chalk.

Show the spider that they will be creating starting next week to provide them with
interest

Have an extra piece of scrap paper handy: when creating the web, make sure to only
get the corner to middle of the paper. The scrap paper blocks any other chalk from
passing a certain point. After completeing that, create the curves in the web with
white charcoal pencils.

-20 Min

Work on the web, check to see if students are doing whats asked, give help if needed

-5 Min

Clean up any access chalk, whipe down table, put things away in their proper places.

WEEK 2
-5 Min

Brain Excersise- Have the children stretch and breath before sitting

-10 Min

Let kids finish their webs,

-10 Min

Go step by step with creating the spider through pipe cleaners with them, show them
how to twist the base of the spider, show them how to apply the beads in a way that
they wont fall off.

25 Min- Continues to work of spider webs (hopefully finished by the 5 minute cleanup. If not give the students who have not finished time next week- 5 minutes).

15 Min

Work on the spider, provide help if needed

-5 Min

Clean up

WEEK 3
-5 Min

Brain Excersise- Have the children stretch and breath before sitting

-5 Min

Remind them that it is the last week to work on this and that they should be finishing
up their spiders and gluing them on the web

-30 Min

Work on the spiders and any finishing touches they might want

-5 Min

Clean up

V. Check for Understanding:

Create a checklist for the students to fill out assessing their behavior, what they have
learned: vocabulary, use of tools, understanding what spiders are and what they do, what
spiders webs are and what they do as well.
VI. Monitor and Adjust:
Seating arrangements
Thicker chalk vs thinner chalk
Way to position paper on table/tape paper on table
Way to snap the yarn
VII. Accommodations:
Taping the paper at a different angle if it is difficult in the way demonstrated. Apply a form of
grip if the charcoal pencils are hard to use. Providing different kinds of glue, scissors, chalk.
VIII. Clean Up:
Wiping tables, cleaning charcoal/chalk, cleaning access pipe cleaner that needs to be
thrown/recycled. Get tape off of the tables, throw away.
IX. Closure and Assessment:
After this project, the children will know how to apply white color to black paper, a creative
way to create linear lines, how spider webs are created why spiders create them as well as
the anatomy of spiders and where the webs come from. By using this information, they will
be able to understand earth science and have an understanding of insects/animals, their
habitats and why they do what they do.
