45 Minutes (Short Day)

(5 mins) Check Homework & Review Vocabulary
Assessment: I will come around and check students handouts to see if they completed their
highlighting and annotations of the Camp Harmony text from yesterday. If it looks complete, I
will give them a star so that when they turn it in tomorrow, I will know that they completed the
work and they will get ten points for their annotations.
Check for Understanding: I will then ask students if they want me to review any of the
vocabulary before their cumulative review test on Friday. If so, I will take five minutes to go
over terms, definitions, and examples. If not, we will move straight into their independent
reading for the period.
(40 mins) Sustained Silent Reading
Common Core Standards:

Reading Standards for Literature: #10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend
literature, including stories, dramas, and poems, at the high end of grades 68 text
complexity band independently and proficiently

Objectives:

Students will be able to achieve sustained, well-paced independent reading of a book


of their choosing.
Students will be able to develop more vocabulary and higher reading skills through
frequent S.S.R.

Purpose: You are going to read your chosen books silently for the remainder of the period, in
order to improve your reading skills and work towards that 400 page minimum by the end of the
grading period.
Input: Pull out your books and begin reading silently. You will read for the remainder of the
period.
Independent Practice: Students will read silently and independently for 40 minutes.
Assessment: At the end of the grading term, students will turn in another reading log after
tracking the number of pages that they read. They may include their reading for SSR.
