IHSAA Event Security Policy

To help ensure the safest and most secure atmosphere for this IHSAA State Final, event management will diligently maintain established security procedures and activities. This will require complete
cooperation by all competing teams, contest officials and fans. Security will always have priority over
convenience; therefore, if you are requested to cooperate with event personnel in any manner, please
do so promptly. Your assistance will enable our staff to fulfill its responsibilities efficiently.
IHSAA - Pure Spirit. Pure Sport. PURE INDIANA!

Welcome to this
Championship Event
Since 1903, the Indiana High School Athletic
Association has promoted the values of education
based athletics and was the primary reason for its
formation over 100
years ago. It has
been an honor for our
Association to partner
with member schools
in the promotion of
these ideals. The
importance of this
mission is more critical
today than ever in our
history.
Currently in our state,
over 160,000 students
from 410 different
IHSAA member
schools choose to participate in interscholastic
athletics. These fortunate students absorb a variety
of life lessons as they develop from adolescents
to mature young adults. The opportunity to learn
self-discipline, teamwork, sacrifice, loyalty and
commitment are attributes that have come to be
known as the other half of education. The mastery
of these characteristics retains dramatic impact as
these young people assume leadership roles in our
society.
A former high school principal once shared with each
of his incoming freshman classes that you will only
take away from high school what you leave behind.
The students that perform before you today are
leaving their absolute best behind for generations of
admirers to recall.
On behalf of the IHSAA Staff and Board of Directors,
we welcome you to todays events. Education
based athletics which are pure, wholesome, and
inexpensive reflecting local flavor and enthusiasm
has always been the objective. It is what we mean
when we say.. Pure Spirit, Pure Sport, Pure
Indiana!
Cordially,

Bobby Cox
IHSAA Commissioner

Larry Butch Jones to be Honored as States Top Official

Larry Butch Jones of Logansport is the recipient of the 2016 Interscholastic Athletic Officials
Association Award for excellence in the sport of
football. Jones will be honored
in a special ceremony at this
weekends state finals.
Each year, the Indiana
High School Athletic Association, in cooperation
with the National Federation
of Interscholastic Officials
Association, recognizes and
honors an outstanding official
in each of the 11 sports during
the school year.
During his career, Butch has officiated 41
sectionals, 32 regionals, 20 semi-states, and ten
state finals.
Jones was selected for this honor by a committee representing the officials associations. In
Indiana there are 24 associations made up of men
and women who assist in providing wholesome,

worthwhile, and healthy activities for the student

athletes in our state. Statewide, there are more
than 8,000 officials licensed by the IHSAA in 11
sports.
A licensed football referee for 51 years, Jones
is a member of the North Central Officials Association, for whom he has served as a clinician, rules
interpreter, and even president. Butch, also an
IHSAA clinician and rules interpreter, is a licensed
referee in basketball for which he has also officiated multiple State Finals.
Larry Butch Jones is a 1958 graduate of Logansport High School. He holds both Bachelors
and Masters degrees from Ball State University
and is a business teacher for the Logansport
School Corporation. He has also been both an
Assistant Coach and Head Coach for the Berries
baseball team, helping guide them to multiple
state finals during his coaching career. Jones and
his wife Judy have been married for 52 years and
have three children: Lori, Hayley, and Matthew.

Blake Ress and Phil N. Eskew

Mental Attitude Awards
At the conclusion of each state championship game, the IHSAA Executive Committee, along with the Indianapolis Colts, will present the
Blake Ress or Phil N. Eskew Mental Attitude Award to an outstanding senior participant in the football state tournament.
The recipients of this award, who were nominated by their principal and coach, must excel in mental attitude, scholarship, leadership, and
athletic ability. The award is named in honor of Mr. Eskew, who served as the Indiana High School Athletic Associations third commissioner from
1962 to 1976. Under his leadership, the IHSAA football state tournament was initiated in 1973. In 2015, the Mental Attitude Awards in classes A,
2A, and 3A were renamed in honor of Commissioner Emeritus Blake Ress, who served as the IHSAAs seventh commissioner from 2000-2011.
The Indianapolis Colts, IHSAA corporate partner and presenting sponsor of the IHSAA football tournament, will present a $1,000 scholarship
to the school in the name of the recipient. Since 1989, over $840,000 in college scholarships have been presented to deserving high school
students in Indiana and we thank the Indianapolis Colts for helping carry on that tradition.

Lafayette Central Catholics Defense Helps Deliver State Championship
Lafayette Central Catholics offense entered the Class A
state championship game averaging 53.4 points per game,
but it was the top-ranked Knights defense that made the
biggest statement in a 34-7 win against No. 3 LintonStockton. The win was LCCs
seventh football state title.
LCC shut down a Miners
offense averaging 524 yards
and more than 54 points a
game. Linton managed just 168
total yards 114 on the ground,
324 below its season average.
Offensively, the Knights
finished with 375 yards.
Brandon Yeagy ran for three
touchdowns, quarterback Avery
Denhart threw for 193 yards
hitting Luke Fusiek four times
for 130 and Jackson Anthrop
ran for 149 yards.
Denhart hit a wide-open
Fusiek for a 63-yard scoring
pass on the Knights fifth play
from scrimmage that gave LCC

a 7-0 lead. Denhart and Fusiek hooked again in the second

quarter on a 36-yard pass that set up Yeagys 3-yard scoring run.
Sam Milazzo added a 25-yard field goal midway
through the second quarter that gave the
Knights a 17-0 lead. But Linton put together
a 13-play, 90-yard drive just before the
end of the first half aided by 35 yards in
LCC penalties to close the gap to 17-7.
Tyler Meurer capped the drive with a 7-yard
scoring toss to Jacob Clothier with just 13
seconds left in the half.

Milazzo added a 23-yard field in
the third quarter, and the Knights put the
game away with an eight-play, 48-yard drive
capped by Yeagys 1-yard score with 7:40
to go in the game. Yeagy would tack on
another score with 3:05 remaining following
an LCC interception inside Linton territory.

Meurer threw for 54 yards, ran
for 33 more and was in on five tackles. The
Miners were making their first state finals
appearance.

Monrovia Earns First State Championship in any Sport

The No. 3 Bulldogs used a punishing running game and
a staunch defense to pull away from No. 5 Whiting 33-6.
Monrovia ran for 373 yards and shut down Whitings highoctane offense.
The Oilers came into the finals averaging 37.9 points

38

and 407.7 yards per game but managed just 236 yards
against the Bulldogs. On five second-half possessions,
Whiting gained just 83 yards and turned the ball over three
times.
Dalton Smith got the Bulldogs started quickly, taking
a handoff on the second offensive play of the game and
racing 76 yards for a touchdown. Smith finished with a
game-high 167 rushing yards.
Whiting countered with its own 52-yard scoring
drive, but the Oilers missed the extra-point try. Monrovia
answered, driving 64 yards on 11 plays and finishing with
Jaden Rheas 8-yard scamper into the end zone.
With 1:39 left in the first half, Whiting quarterback Stuart Glasgow drove the Oilers down the field, but on fourth
down at the Monrovia 24, Glasgows pass fell incomplete to
end the threat.
On the first offensive play of the third quarter, Monrovias Jeremiah Welty forced and then recovered a fumble at
the Whiting 41. Eight plays later, Smith dashed into the end
zone from two yards out to push the lead to 21-6.
Rhea, who rushed for 122 yards, added an 18-yard
touchdown in the fourth quarter after the Bulldogs stopped
Whiting on downs. Monrovia quarterback John Williams
closed out the scoring with a 3-yard run following teammate
Clay Starnes 51-yard interception return midway through
the fourth.
Glasgow threw for 137 yards and ran for 63 for Whiting.
Monrovia finished with 0 passing yards in the game, the
eighth time that has happened in a state championship

Chatard Claims Record 13th State Championship
It was fitting that on a day when Bishop Chatard became
Indianas all-time leader in high school football state titles,
a staunch defense and a grinding, relentless running attack
two trademarks of the Trojans during many of those titles
led to the win.
The fifth-ranked Trojans downed No. 3 West Lafayette
31-7, giving Chatard its 13th state crown one better than
rival Cathedral. The Trojans turned
two second-half defensive stops
into 10 points, breaking open a tight
game and giving Head Coach Vince
Lorenzano his seventh state title at
the school.
Leading 14-7 in the third quarter,
the Trojans (12-3) stopped the Red
Devils on downs at the Chatard
14. Four plays later, Trojan tailback
Jarrod Stiver broke off a 65-yard
touchdown run.
West Lafayette (13-2) drove to
the Chatard 32 on its next possession but failed to convert again on
fourth down. The Trojans then used
up more than six minutes of clock,
driving 54 yards in 14 plays to set up

Caleb Kobets 31-yard field goal for a 24-7 lead with 3:49
left in the game.
Following Chatards third interception of the game,
tailback Gabe Coleman got free on a 30-yard touchdown
run. Coleman finished with 118 yards on the ground, while
Stiver added 108 and John Chavis 77 including a 42-yard
TD early in the third quarter that broke a 7-7 tie.
Both teams scored on their first
possession of the game, but defense
took over the rest of the half. Neither
team was able to mount a serious
drive until the Trojans marched from
their own 28 to the Red Devil 20 late
in the half. But with time expiring,
Kobets was short on a 37-yard field
goal attempt.
West Lafayette entered Friday
averaging 468 yards per game but
was held to 286 by the Trojans. Travis
Rolle ran 32 times for 146 yards for
the Red Devils.

Second Half Lifts FW Bishop Dwenger to 4A State Championship

It took awhile for Fort Wayne Dwenger to get going. But
once the Saints did, they were impossible to stop.
Trailing 3-0 at halftime, the No. 3 Saints rallied for four
scores over the final two quarters three coming on Amaun
Clark runs to down No. 9 East Central. Its Fort Wayne
Dwengers fourth state title and first
since 1991.
The Saints did it without, but
inspired by, longtime Dwenger coach
Chris Svarczkopf, who was battling
cancer. Ernie Bojrab stepped in as
interim coach for the season and led
the Saints to a 14-1 record.
Clark finished with 138 yards
rushing, gaining 94 of those after
halftime. His 24-yard score gave the
Saints their first lead of the game with
7:29 left in the third quarter.
Clark added a 4-yarder early in
the fourth quarter, capping a 91-yard
drive keyed by quarterback Blake
Podschlnes 49-yard pass to Zach
Norton.
An interception by Austin Burns
was returned to the East Central 23,

setting up Clarks 11-yard score less than three minutes later.

Another interception led to Podschlnes 1-yard touchdown
run with 3:41 remaining.
While the Dwenger offense started clicking the second
half, its defense took over, holding East Central (12-3) to
64 yards over the final two quarters.
The Trojans finished the game with
172 yards 215 below their average.
Dwengers defense also forced four
turnovers.
Dwenger drove 55 yards on its first
possession but couldnt convert on
fourth down at the Trojan 25. That was
the only significant drive of the first
half until East Central drove 85 yards
keyed by a third-down unsportsmanlike
penalty on the Saints and a 43-yard
Doug Rosemeyer run to set up Nick
Stidhams 20-yard field goal with 6:07
left in the half.
East Central was making its first
appearance in the state finals since
making back-to-back 4A appearances
in 1993 and 1994 and winning the title
in 1994.

FW Snider wins State Title in Highest Scoring Championship Game

What looked like a blowout became the greatest

comeback in state finals history until Fort Wayne Snider
decided it had one more score in it.
The fifth-ranked Panthers (13-1) built a 28-point lead on
No. 1 New Palestine, saw the Dragons storm back to take
the lead twice in the fourth quarter, and then responded
with a 68-yard touchdown drive in the final minute to pull
out a 64-61 win in the highest-scoring final in Indiana history.
With his team trailing 61-56, Snider quarterback Isaac
Stiebeling completed 4-5 passes for 65 yards to set up
his 3-yard touchdown run with just eight seconds left. The
two-point conversion gave the Panthers a 64-61 lead;
New Palestine was then intercepted at midfield as time ran
out.
Stiebeling had a monster game, throwing for 346 yards
and three touchdowns, running for 33 yards and three
scores, and catching a 37-yard touchdown pass. His nearly
flawless first-half performance helped the Panthers score
six touchdowns in just 7:33 of clock time to seize a 42-14
lead against the defending Class 4A state champs.
But the Dragons (13-1), who saw their 28-game win
streak snapped, wouldnt go quietly. Behind a record-break-

ing performance from quarterback Alex Neligh, NP would

score 35 straight points from the end of the first half to early
in the fourth quarter, taking a 49-42 lead with 8:34 left in the
game.
Snider would retake the lead at 56-49 and then block
New Palestines extra-point try on the Dragons ensuing
touchdown to maintain a one-point advantage. But the
Dragons got a defensive stop and took possession at their
own 11 with 1:23 left. Three plays later, Neligh hit Duke
Blackwell on a 56-yard score to give NP a 61-56 lead with
63 seconds remaining. A two-point try by the Dragons
failed, setting the stage for Stiebelings heroics.
Neligh finished the game throwing for an overall statefinals record 501 yards. He connected on four touchdown
passes, and also ran for 166 yards and four more scores.
Blackwell set an overall finals record with 328 yards receiving, catching 10 passes and scoring three times.
The Dragons 757 total yards smashed the previous
record set by New Palestine in its 77-42 win against New
Prairie in last years 4A final. The teams also combined for
an overall finals record of 1,302 total yards.

Center Grove Completes Perfect Season for 6A State Title

Twice in the second half, Penn looked to have top-ranked
Center Grove on the ropes. Both times, as theyve done all
season, the Trojans answered.
Center Grove responded to two long scoring drives by
the No. 3 Kingsmen with touchdown drives of their own.
The second was a 14-play, 77-yard beauty capped by Titus
McCoys fourth-down, 1-yard plunge with 1:41 left that
clinched the Trojans 28-16 win and their second state title.
McCoy was the workhorse on the final drive, finishing
with a Class 6A finals record 193 yards on 27 carries, scoring three times. He made it look easy on Center Groves
first possession of the game, breaking off runs of 27 and
38 yards during the drive, the latter giving the Trojans a 7-0
lead just 2:09 into the game.
Two possessions later, the Trojans put together another
strong drive, moving 46 yards in nine plays. On second
down from the Penn 6-yard line, CG quarterback Joey Siderewicz executed a perfect ball fake and found a wide-open
Triston Clark in the back of the end zone for the score.
Penn (12-2) followed with a 16-play, 76-yard drive took
8:43 off the clock and ended with a Sam Scholtes 21-yard
field. The Trojans countered by driving to the Kingsmen 37,
but CG kicker Nate Snyder was short and right on a 54-yard
field goal attempt as time expired in the half.
Penn opened the second half with another long drive,
using up 6:16 to move 77 yards. Quarterback Camden
Bohn was the catalyst, rushing three times for 41 yards
before finding a wide-open James Lapalucci in the end
zone from 15 yards out.
40

Center Grove countered with another quick scoring

drive, moving 80 yards in just over two minutes. Lee Clinker
got free on runs of 37 and 11 yards to set up McCoys
1-yard TD with 2:19 left in the third.
Penn wasnt done. Bohn who threw for 139 yards and
ran for 77 more hit 4-5 passes for 55 yards to set up his
own 10-yard TD run with 8:38 left. But behind McCoy, the
Trojans were able to use up nearly seven minutes of clock
before scoring the clinching TD.
