Objective(s): Students will be able to identify and describe the color, size, and
texture of various leaves
Students will be able to observe and point to the veins on leaves

Standards: New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for the Common

Vocabulary 5a. Sort common objects into categories (e.g., shapes, foods) for
understanding of the concepts the categories represent
Science 5h. Describe and identifies the different structures of familiar
plants and animals. (Plants have stems, roots, leaves, etc)

-Children may not understand the difference

leaves in their hand or magnifying glass

Description of Instruction
Opening
Preview: The teacher will introduce the
fall leaf song in addition to the material
that will be used during the activities.

Hook: The teacher will ask questions


(access prior knowledge) and recall
students leaf hunt experience. The
teacher will introduce the different leaves
to the class.

The small group will then sort the bin of
leaves into different categories

The children will then receive a worksheet
in which they will draw their own picture
of a leaf or children can do a leaf rubbing
activity in which they are able to see the
veins of the leaf.
Students with IEP or 504 plans: More
structured individual activity. Children will
write a sentence about why they like their
leaves or create a story using leaves.
Closing
The teacher will close with the fall leaves
song and the class can have a group
sharing of their individual artwork.
