Hook: The teacher will ask the students

questions to access their knowledge on
the train/subway system. (Ex: Who takes
trains to school? What train line do you
take? Have you experienced delays

before? Why might trains be delayed?)

Mini-Lesson (I do)
5

The teacher will show the class a short

video on the subway system. The children
will see a train in action and be able to
observe some of the problems a train
may experience.
The teacher will then introduce a range of
pictures depicting the train scenarios
from the video and ask the children to
think about what the problem may be.
The teacher will talk about the problems
in some of the picture cards and suggest
a possible solution.
Shared (We do)
The teacher will assign picture cards to
groups of three children, who will discuss
the problem in the card and come up with
one solution to share with the class.
The teacher will write each groups
problem and solution on chart paper as
they share with the class.
On big chart paper: Title: what problems
might affect the train? Have a problem
and solution column.

The children will receive a worksheet in

which they will draw a picture showing
one train problem and a possible solution
in the right column.
Students with IEP or 504 plans: More
structured individual activity. Ask the
children to think about other problems we
have not mentioned that can cause train
problems and how it might make others
feel. The children can either draw or write
a sentence about it.

Closing
The teacher will wrap up by asking the

children to share their work if finished.

The teacher will ask the children to name
