LESSON TITLE: [Short Vowel a Phonics Reader]


At the end of the lesson, SS will be able to:
Recognize the short vowel /a/ sound in sentences.
Read Phonics Reader fluently.
Contents

Greet SS. / Do High-fives. / Sing the Hello song.


Ask about the Date / Day / Weather.
Check the attendance.
Make teams and write the team names on the board.
Set and reinforce classroom rules.

SS will review the key sound, keywords and sentences.

(Review should be done very quickly and with speed.)


Draw SS attention.
Inform SS that they are going to review the last lesson.
T flips the FCs, SS say the words with speed.
Review the sentences quickly. Recite the sentences.

SS will be introduced to Short vowel /a/ Phonics Reader.


SS will practice to read sentences in the Reader fluently.
Introduce the Phonics Readers ppt.
1. Do picture walking for page one.
2. Elicit what SS know already (no right or wrong answers).
3. Ask appropriate questions to elicit key word(s) from SS.
4. Introduce the sentence for each page.
5. Have SS find where the sound /a/ in the sentence is.
6. Circle and practice reading the words with the sound /a/.
7. Point out the sight words and practice reading them.
*Pay special attention to the words with /th/ sound.
8. Practice reading the whole sentence.
9. Repeat the procedure for the rest of the sentences.
10. Drill reading each sentence 3 times as a whole class.
Do rhythmical reading with SS.
1. Clap hands when reading the words with the vowel
sound /a/.
2. Stomp feet when reading the sight words.

*Memorizing the sentences is not mandatory, but repetitive drilling should


allow SS to naturally learn/memorize the sentences.
*Make sure this process is done with some speed. Do not bore the SS.
**Do not ask comprehension questions to SS with the readers sentences at this stage.
***The purpose is to practice reading, not understanding the contents.

1. Have SS stand up and pair up.
2. SS do high-five with their partners: Right hands together/ Left hands together/ Both
hands together.

3. Tell SS to lift up their hands and say: Hooray!
4. Have SS sit up very nicely.
*This activity should be done quickly.

Activity 1 (5mins)
Have SS open their WB pg.3.
1. Have SS read sentence No.1 in the reader. Have SS point to
each word while reading.
*SS can read by whole class or take turn to read in teams.
**Give points to team that can read clearly and loudly.

2. Say a word randomly in sentence no.1. Then, have SS circle


that particular word in their book with a pencil.
3. Check the answer.
Repeat the procedure with other sentences. Do so with speed.
At the end, clap for SS good work.

Activity 2: Clap! Clap! Clap! (5mins)


Divide the class into two teams.
Instruct SS how to play the game.
1. One team will read the sentences in the reader (medium
speed).
2. The other team will listen and clap their hands/clap in pairs
when they hear the words that have the key sound as medial
sound.
3. Switch the teams task.
Repeat the procedure.
Give more pts to the team that could read well/clap correctly.
At the end, clap for SS good work.

Activity 3: Perfect Match (5mins)


Cut out provided sentence strips and picture cards (before the
class).
Display picture cards on the board and number them 1 to 4.
Put sentence strips on the other corner of the board.
Instruct SS how to play the game.
1. Have SS read all sentence strips (not in order) to review.
2. Have 2 teams. Each team takes turn to come up and put
sentence strips under the correct picture.
3. Check and drill the answer with the whole class.
4. Give pts to the winners team.
At the end, clap for SS good work.
SS will reinforce the lesson through self-practice.
Work on WB pg.3
Use the book to give instructions and assign the exercises.
After clear instruction, allow SS to open their books.
SS do the exercises by themselves (set clear time limit -2min).
Use PPT to check the answers together. Drill the sentence each
time.

*If SS have a hard time doing BW by themselves, T can show PPT and do the BW
together with SS.

Clean up and organize the desks. Clap for SS good work.

Review the sentences (recite the sentences with rhythm).


Read the Phonics Reader.
At the end, have SS sit very nicely.
Avoid using physical games towards the end of the class. It is
important to settle down the SS before they step out of the
classroom for safety reasons.
Count the points to choose the winner team.
Choose the best student of the day to be the Captain.
Push chair in/ Line-up / Say Goodbye / Leave the class quietly

NOTE:
-Do all the steps of Greeting/Opening if its the very first class of the day.
-Choose misbehaving students to be in charge of simple tasks such as: collecting books, delivering
materials/supplies, etc.
-The Captain will be honored with something special such as: to be the first in line to go home, etc.
-Teachers should always model first/demonstrate for activities.
-Always ask the whole class for the outcome.
