Teaching Internship Observation #1

1. When I entered the classroom for the first time the students caught my attention.
There are a lot of students in the classroom and they caught my attention first because
they are the focus and the central part of the classroom.
2. All of the students in the two classes are in 6th grade and both classes are
diverse. The classes have about the same amount of boys and girls. The first class is the
honors math class so they are advanced in academic abilities. The second class is the
regular math class and has the most ELL and IEP students so their academic abilities
arent as high.
3. My cooperating teacher usually has a good attitude. She has created a class
environment that is good and generally positive. They are active and the students are
usually always on topic and doing their work.
4. The students are learning about mean, median, mode and range. Currently they
are practicing these skills. They are also starting the learn how to make line plots and
box and whisker plots. One specific example is they made a line plot with the students.
So one of the line plots the did was the month of their birthdays. So all the students who
had a birthday in January made a line and everyone in February, and all the months of
the year. The teacher counted everyone in each line and then they drew the line plot on
paper to show them how to draw it and what it looks like. They drew a line and wrote out
all the months of the year on the line and drew one X for each person above the month
their birthdays were. It was a good way to make them learn it but be active instead of
sitting at a desk.
5. My cooperating teacher addresses inappropriate behavior by asking them to stop
and gives them three warnings. Usually they listen to her and there isnt a problem. If it is
needed they will have a classroom discussion about how whatever they were doing was
unacceptable. One example is that there was a student who talks a lot in the class and is
disruptive. She took three post it notes and each time he was being disruptive she would
take one away. He never got past three but I would guess if he did he would go to the
office or get a call home.
6. My cooperating teacher gets the childrens attention by either saying to be quiet
in 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 or she says to clap 2 times then clap 3 times and then the students are
quiet and listening to her.
7. The classroom environment is a positive environment and always active and at
work.
8. The students get the chance to interact with one another if they have classwork
or homework to do and are given permission to work with a friend, also when they are
doing practice as a class and for a problem they can turn to a friend to figure it out
together. They interact with the whole group when they are going over the warm up,
quizzes, or homework. And when they are doing notes or class work they work as a
group.
9. My cooperating teacher transitions by getting everyone's attention, tells them to
put away whatever work they were doing at the time and if they are continuing to another
piece of work she passes that out or she tells them to get out the next thing. If it is the

end of class she tells them to pack up and stand behind their chair until the bell rings
and they leave.
10. One student that has caught my eye is a student that talks a lot and is disruptive
to the class. The teacher always has to remind him to be quiet or give him warnings.
11. Rules for the classroom:
a. Be respectful
b. Be responsible
c. Listen when others are talking
d. Follow directions
e. Keep your hands to yourself
12. One procedure for the classroom is for when they arrive to class. When they
come in they should grab their binders from the shelf, or take it out if they took it home,
and start to work on the warm up on the board. When they are finished they should sit
quietly and wait for further instructions from the teacher.
13. I think they are reacting positively. They are starting to turn to me to ask
questions instead only wanting to ask their teacher right away like they did the first time
or two that I was there.

14. The diagram of the floor plan is below. I think it is a little crowded in the

classroom but it is the best you can do with so many students in one class, so overall it
is a good set up.
