Family Resource Centre Headlines

Welcome to Winter!!
As we near 2017, its a great time to reflect on the previous year.
This past year saw us gain a new space in the basement of Central Agencies
4870 51 Street lower level). We were running low on office and program
space. In case you werent aware, Kari, Lorraine, Krista and Jennifer have
moved their offices over to our new location.
We had many successful events in the past year. Family Day in the Fieldhouse
saw over 300 participants attend and play with their families.
Our Spring and Monster Mash dances continue to be very popular
with our families. Our Canada Day Book sale was a fabulous fundraiser for
our Centre as well.
Staff this year all attended the International Triple P conference in Banff. This
was a great learning opportunity for all of us and we came home with new
ideas. We added Jolene to our staff, who made us a staffing group of 13.
April left us this past month to have a beautiful baby girl, and will be
returning in November of 2017. Staff continue to come up with new and
creative programs each and every year.
Our Board of Directors and Playground Committee folks knocked it out of the
park this year with their tireless dedication and volunteerism for this agency.
They are truly an amazing group and we would be lost with out them.
As we look to 2017, we hope everyone has a healthy and prosperous year!!

Reminder: Registration for winter programs is Saturday January 7, 2017 beginning at

10:00am-2:00pm registrations will be taken until programs are full.

Juggling work & family Is this possible?

Trying to juggle the demands of work and family can be very tough. But
when you get the balance right, life will feel a lot easier.
Too much pressure from either work or family can seriously affect our lives and the
lives of those around us. When work stress spills over into home life, we might argue
more, have problems with our relationships and suffer health problems too.
Stress from home can impact your work in the same way. You might even struggle to
do your job properly.
So how can you get the balance right? A good rule to start with is that when you are
at home your family is your focus. And when you are at work your job is your focus.
At home, try to make your mornings run as smoothly as possible. If you start your day
calmly then you won't be bringing any stress from home to work.
Set some ground rules and put a leaving home routine in place. You can even teach
your kids to do things for themselves, like getting dressed.
At work, you should try to do hard tasks early in the day. By doing this you will be taking less stress home with you at the end of the day.
Think of some ways to unwind and relax after work that aren't going to affect your
family's evening routine. Regular exercise and healthy eating can really help NEED
TO CITE WHERE THIS CAME FROM

Pester power: Teach your child to be a good consumer

It could be anything from breakfast cereal to the newest computer game. But
chances are your child has a very clear idea of what they want you to buy.
It's hardly surprising when you think about the money spent on marketing to
kids. Children who watch two hours of TV per day will see over 10,000 ads
every year.
There's little we can do to shield our children from the daily stream of advertising. But we can make life in this material world a little easier for moms, dads
and kids.
You can help your child understand why you're buying something or why you're
not buying something. Rather than just saying "because I said so," you could
explain why the product isn't right. Is it too expensive? Perhaps they can have it
when they're older.
You can also help your child by teaching them the value of money. Give them a
set allowance to spend as they like. Even six year olds know what an empty
piggy bank means.
And finally, think about what you say and do in front of your
kids. If you always discuss other people in terms of their
money, your child will learn that having money is the most
important value.

Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potato fries at restaurants are
often deep fried in unhealthy fat. A
healthier way to make them is to bake
with a small amount of vegetable oil,

1 Tbsp Canola oil 22 mL
tsp Salt 2 mL
1 tsp Garlic powder 5 mL

2. Spray a shallow baking sheet with
non-stick cooking spray or place a
sheet of parchment paper on the baking sheet to keep the fries from sticking to the pan.
3. Wash sweet potatoes thoroughly (do
not peel).
4. Cut potatoes into wedges (about
inch/ 1 cm thick).
5. Pat potatoes dry with paper towels
or clean dish towel.
6. In a large bowl, mix potatoes with
oil, salt and garlic powder.
7. Spread the potatoes on the baking
sheet.
8. Bake for 15 minutes.
9. Turn potatoes once and bake for another 10 minutes or until golden and
crisp.
Makes 6 servings (125 mL/ cup/ 91
g)
Note: For variation, use any other root
vegetable: potatoes, yams, carrots, or
turnips.
