understanding of why we all look different.

*Able to identify different features in one another.
For example: freckles, birthmarks, or scares from injuries.
*Able to identify who they resemble most in their family
Required Materials:
Small Paper Plates
Yarn: yellow, black, brown and red
Lengths- cut up in short and long
Gems for Eyes: blue, green, brown, black, yellow
Large Popsicle Sticks
Red Construction Paper- cut out in the shapes of small hearts
Crayons
Glue
Tape
Mirror
Journal paper
Pencils
Anticipatory Set (Lead-In):
Have all of your students sit in a circle on the carpet. Hold the mirror in your hand and look at
yourself and ask, Do we look the same?
Step-By-Step Procedures:

Pass the mirror to each and every student and ask the same question. When your students are
looking at themselves, remind them to keep in mind what color their hair, eyes, and skin are.
They will need to know those three items for their art project. Have your students in order do
the following:
1. Color their paper plate in the shade that matches their skin
2. Have them glue the color of yarn for their hair
3. Have them glue the color of gem for their eyes
4. Glue their red heart to represent their lips
5. Tape their plate onto a popsicle stick
6. Allow to dry
Plan for Independent Practice:
Have your students reflect on the faces of their friends. Give them each a journal paper and
pencil. Have them draw each friend who sat to the left and right of them while on the carpet.
Then have them write about how they are different and similar.
Closure (Reflect Anticipatory Set):
After all the faces are dry have your students sit back on the carpet with their masks. Ask your
students if they look like their Mom or their Dad. Where does their hair, eyes and skin color
come from? Which parent do they most resemble? Where does their family come from?
Assessment Based On Objectives:
They will understand that their features and physical traits come from their parents. All
students will be assessed during circle time through conversation, questions, and in group
dialogue while they are working on their journal sheet.
Possible Connections to Other Subjects:
History- Discovering the history of their families and ancestors.
Science- Biological genes and traits that we are born with.
Geography- Determining where families are from.
