EXTENDING OUR CIRCLE OF CONCERN

In January of 1963, Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel opened the National
Conference on Race and Religion in Chicago with the following words:
At the first conference on religion and race, the main participants were
Pharaoh and Moses. Moses words were: Thus says the Lord, the God of
Israel, let My people go that they may celebrate a feast to Me. While
Pharaoh retorted: Who is the Lord, that I should heed this voice and let
Israel go? I do not know the Lord, and moreover I will not let Israel go.
The outcome of that summit meeting has not come to an end. Pharaoh is
not ready to capitulate. The exodus began, but is far from having been
completed. In fact, it was easier for the children of Israel to cross the Red
Sea than for a Negro to cross certain university campuses.
With these words, Heschel linked the civil rights struggle to the biblical
Exodus, and, more importantly, the struggle of African Americans to be his own,
their suffering was his suffering.
This month we will observe Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Separated by faith and
background, there is one narrative that lies at the base of both Heschel and King
a leaders ability to hear the cry of another and make it his or her own. The ability
to empathize with the plight of others was Kings calling card as he felt personally
responsible for the anguish and suffering of his community. Kings legacy, the very
legacy left to us by Moses, Heschel, and so many others is that redemption begins
when we extend our circle of concern and not only embrace the suffering of others,
but make that suffering our own.
It is said of the great 18th century mystic, Rabbi Moshe Leib of Sassov, that
whenever he saw someones suffering he too shared their pain. When his ability to
share anothers suffering was questioned, the rabbi replied, What do you mean
share, it is my own sorrow; how can I help but suffer it? A century later, in a
different time and place, in his second inaugural, Lincoln famously concluded:
With malice toward none, with charity for all, we must care for him who shall
have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan Now, as we remember
the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. we must remember that redemption comes, not
through suffering, not through a great cry, but when and only when a cry is heard,
becomes our own, and is acted upon.
Under the leadership of our Social Action Committee, we are holding a series
of conversations on Race and Reconciliation facilitated by AVODAH. The next
gathering will be Sunday, January 8 at 11:00 am. We have also begun a
conversation with the Alfred Street Baptist Church to think about how we can work
together within our greater community. Finally, we can build community on
January 15 at our annual Celebrate Community 5k & 1k Fun Run/Walk. There is
much work to be done, but this is the standard to which we hold this community,
our people, and all of humanity.

HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well, it isnt quite the New Year as I write this message, but then it is the New
Year as you are reading it.
We are the mid-point of our fiscal year and all is well. By now the comedy night
has been an enormous success (thank you to all involved and especially Judith
Fogel and Nicole Yakatan). The Moline Lecture Series will have completed its
second year and more classes (Aliba dRav, Jewish Values and the Palestinian
Conflict, and the second year of Jewish Ritual) will have reached their half way mark.
I hope that you are enjoying our repaved parking lot (kol hakavod to Mirza
Lopez, Gail Bentkover, the Building and Grounds committee, and many generous
donors). This much needed improvement adds to the attractive appearance of our
place of worship and makes it a much safer place to walk. Please reserve the four
marked spaces for congregants who need extra help. We also have the required
handicap parking spaces but PLEASE take advantage of these spaces and DO NOT
PARK along the yellow curb it is a real safety hazard.

This January will be filled with fun events including the 5k community run (thank
you, Naffer, for keeping this going). If you have not registered, please do so and join the

OHEV ET HATACHACHOT
A day doesnt pass that I hear from a member that one or more of our children
are misbehaving. On occasion, the member tells me that the actions of those
disrespectful children has ruined a class, a service, or a program for them. After
listening to the complainer, I ask them if they have spoken to the child directly.
The answers to my query include such responses as no but it wouldnt help,
yes, but it doesnt help, or their parents dont like me to interfere, or I dont
know what to say.
This isnt a new situation in communal life; however it is one we can all help
correct by learning and practicing the middah (Jewish value) of ohev et
hatochachot (which roughly translates as loving reproof). Learning to do proper
tokhha isnt easy. It asks that we take a risk and tell those we care about that we
have concerns with their behavior. Whether we ask a life partner to change how
they behave or ask a child to stop running in the building, when we offer
criticism, we are putting our relationship on the line and making ourselves
vulnerable to being disliked, ignored, or worse.
One of the first steps in knowing how to offer tokhha is to make sure that the
comment and accompanying suggestion to improve, comes from a place of
lovingkindness and positive intent. Scolding never works. When rebuking a
child, it is important to treat them with respect, to offer a solid reason for your
comment, and to offer to help solve the situation by offering positive alternatives.
If, after speaking with a child, one is ignored, or disrespected, then you can bring
our concerns to the childs guardian or a staff member. Simply allowing children
to behave poorly does them no favor in the long run.
Some parents find it difficult to hear that their child misbehaved. As the
mother of three children, I understand this completely. However, I appreciate it a
great deal when other adults, with patience and respect, remind my child of
proper public conduct and social responsibility. I also appreciate it if the adult
then takes the time to seek me out and share with me what they have observed.
Only in this way can I properly help my child. Final responsibility for childrens
behavior rests with parents; however, parents cant be everywhere all the time.
This is why the expression it takes a village to raise a child is true. When we
seek to raise a mench (a person of integrity and honor) it takes a whole
congregation.
Accepting positive criticism is hard no matter how old we are. However, if
the person offering tochha does so with respect, stays positive, and remains
constructive, criticism can turn into teaching. When done properly, criticism
stops being shame and becomes positive force for good. Our tradition cautions
against embarrassing another, even in the case in which the mitzvah of tokh'a
applies. It is forbidden to embarrass another needlessly and certainly not
publically. When speaking to a child, take them aside and speak to them privately.
While this may interrupt your own experience, in the long run, you will help teach
a child. Choose your words mindfully. Let children know that your concerns
come from a place of lovingkindness and support. Remember that many lessons
have to be repeated many times before they are learned.

PRESCHOOL NEWS
Jen Halpern, Director

In early December, Morah Virginia, Moreh Simon, and I attended

Federations annual Jewish Early Childhood Education Conference. The theme of
the conference was Ayeka, which translates as Where are you? It is the question
God asks Adam in Gan Eden after Adam and Eve eat from the forbidden tree, realize
their nakedness, and hide from God.
Each workshop at the conference challenged us to think about where we are
in our beliefs about what young children truly need from the adults in their world in
order to learn and grow. Where are we in our own personal journeys as early
childhood educators? We left inspired and full of new insights and ideas. Ill be
sharing much of what I learned at the conference in the next several bulletin articles.
Meir Muller, an ordained rabbi who also holds a doctorate in early childhood
education, gave a presentation entitled Ayeka?: Mirrors, Windows, and the Sliding
Glass Doors of Constructivist Classrooms. Based on the work of the developmental
psychologist Jean Piaget, constructivism is the theory that knowledge cannot be
transmitted from one person to another. Facts can be transmitted, and often are,
especially in older classrooms. One person can relate facts to another person, and
that person can memorize and regurgitate those facts, but that is not true knowledge.
True knowledge goes beyond recitation of facts; knowledge is how one
understands ones experiences, (which include facts, observations, and skills) turns
them around in ones head, makes connections, questions and investigates them,
applies them to new situations, and creates new meaning. Knowledge is thereby
constructed, and constructing knowledge takes time. In a constructivist classroom,
children are given the time to construct meaning of their world through a variety of
carefully planned experiences guided by the teacher. A constructivist classroom is
full of opportunity for investigation. The teacher doesnt tell or explain. The teacher
asks questions.

as practical to arrange for Brit Milah
and/or naming. The rabbi will be

Also, please contact the synagogue office and the rabbi regarding
arrangements for weddings or other

So what about the mirrors, windows, and sliding glass doors? Rabbi Muller
suggested that children need (metaphorical) mirrors in which to see themselves in
order to learn. They need to relate to the learning experience and find it meaningful
for them before they can fully engage with it. They also need windows to see the
outside world, to appreciate that there is a world beyond theirs, with new
experiences. Finally, they need sliding glass doors to walk though, to engage with
those new experiences and begin to construct knowledge anew.

MAH KOREH
(Continued from page 4)
Rabbi Louis Jacobs, the first leader of Masorti in the United Kingdom, wrote
for the web site My Jewish Learning, Tochha is based on the principle that
all Jews are responsible for one another. To fail to offer rebuke when it is needed
is to participate in the offense. It cannot be denied that conscience-counselors
abounded in Jewish communitiesprigs and busybodies who [are] only too
ready to demonstrate their superiority by adopting a holier-than-thou attitude.
This is probably why, even in Talmudic times, one Rabbi could say (Babylonian
Talmud, Arakhin16b): I doubt whether anyone in this generation is worthy to
offer rebuke.
Despite this challenge, I want to encourage you to care about our
communitys children, and take the risk. Interact with a child in a positive
manner. Explain patiently to a child why talking in the sanctuary is disrespectful
and disruptive. Respectfully share, from a place of patience and kindness what
is expected of people in class, in services, and in social settings. Take a few
minutes and seek out a childs parents and let them know you have spoken to
their child and why. Rather than complaining to the staff that our communitys
children are not behaving with integrity and honor, let our children know that
you care about them and that you are willing to offer proper tokhha. Let them
know how becoming a mensch, will help them prosper in the Jewish community
and in the large secular world. I invite you to seek me out to talk about this
matter whether you are a parent, a child, or a concerned member. Together, our
village can raise wonderful Jewish citizens and responsible citizens of the world.

MEN'S CLUB MUSINGS

BARRY LANDAU
PRESIDENT , AGUDAS ACHIM MEN'S CLUB

Happy New Year to one and all. I hope everyone had a

fun, new year, and that your favorite college team made out
well in one of the innumerable bowl games. Those that used
the secular "holiday season" in service to others, such as the
congregation's Christmas Day dinner at Carpenter's Shelter
deserve special recognition.
Men's Club's upcoming activities are as follows:
Sunday, January 9, 2017, Board Meeting. Open to all. We
need more attendees in order to plan the events guys want to
go to, and to enough volunteers to make the events happen.
My favorite part of these meetings is "Good and Welfare,"
where guys are free to share anything they want to about
themselves.
Sunday January 15, 2017, REPRESENT! at Beth El
Congregation, Bethesda, MD, 10AM-2PM. This is a great
opportunity to mix with guys from around the DMV, and to
meet the leadership of Seaboard Region FJMC. Aaron Moses
Kintu, lay leader of the Abayudaya Ugandan and Kenyan
Conservative Jewish Community has been known to appear
at REPRESENTS by SKYPE. Breakfast food and a great
kosher deli lunch will be served. I attended last year's DMV's
and Baltimore's REPRESENT. The programming was great.

It was aimed at how we can strengthen our clubs, and upon

the issues facing us in the early Twenty-First Century.
Sunday, February 5, 2017, World Wide Wrap, at Agudas
Achim Congregation, The formal event consists of a 10AM
bagels and lox brunch, and learning and demonstrations
about tefillin. For a preview, come to the 9:00 a.m. minyan,
where worshippers will be laying tefillin. Look for more
details concerning WWW in the Weekly Update, the
Shabbat Announcements, and on the AAC Facebook Page.
Please contact Men's Club Ritual VP, Michael Scheinberg,
mike@schuschein.com for more information.
FURTHER IN THE FUTURE:

Sunday, March 19, 2017 (change of date), Blue Academy

Dinner, approximate time 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Agudas
Achim's honoree is the one and only, Mr, Donald Melman,
July 19-23, Federation of Jewish Mens Clubs
International Convention, Crystal Gateway Marriot,
Arlington, VA. (I've gone to two FJMC International
Conventions. I enjoyed them, you will, too.)
At the time I'm writing this column, I am Men's Club
President. By the time you read this I will have submitted
my resignation for personal reasons. Please support the new
President. The Men's Club needs more volunteers. Having
befriended many through or club, regional, and International
activities has been rewarding. I have made many valuable
friends in our club, and throughout the FJMC world.

SOCIAL ACTION COMMITTEE

Creating Opportunities for Engagement
Taking as its call to action racial injustice in Ferguson, Baltimore and elsewhere,
TIKKUN OLAM OPPORTUNITIES
Agudas Achims newly formed Social Action Committee hopes to include every
congregant in opportunities to further social justice. This years programming will ALIVE! House (transitional housing)
focus on a Racial Justice through Learning, Conversation and Action.
monthly food distribution & supplies:
Please join the Conversations on Race on January 8, February 26 and https://www.alive-inc.org/
March 5 in the Flax Chapel from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon.

We will look at the terms we read and hear in news stories, articles, reports and
books about our racial divide. Facilitated by AVODAH (the Jewish Service Corps)
we will view brief videos from a series created by the Seattle Times as its staff has
struggled with the tragic shootings occurring repeatedly across the country and
wrestled with such concepts as people of color, all lives matter, micro
aggressions and white privilege. These videos have been made available online
to the public at the website Under Our Skin, which explains that while
Discussions about race, inclusiveness and sensitivity . . . can leave us feeling
depleted and wondering whether anything has really changed[,] . . . we believe the
personal reflections and stories from the people who participated . . . will inspire all
of us to think and talk about these issues in a deeper way. Well view one video
each month, explore our reactions and discuss its relevance to our own thinking as
individuals and Jews.
