Setting Up the Starting Location Card

This is where it starts, the beginning of the end

All Space Hulk missions begin in the Void Lock,

the boarding torpedo chamber docked to the
infested Space Hulk itself.

There are four double-sided Void Lock cards.

Choose the one that matches the number of
players you have.

The cards are divided into five different zones of

information. Some of these have an important
left-right orientation, while others do not.

1 # of players, center Each Setup card is designed for a specific number of players,
shown here. Unless youre the adventurous type, be sure to select the correct card.

The number and arrow tell you position of the Terrain card. Count from the end
of the formation: an up arrow tells you to count (starting with 1) from the rear of
the formation; a down arrow starts from the front. Not enough Space Marines in the
formation? Place the card in the last position you can count to.

These icons show you the Terrain cards to place

on the left (and right) sides of the formation. This is side-specific: icons on the left
of the card go on the left side of the formation, same for the right.

location deck setup This tells you which Location cards to draw (randomly,
looking only at the numbers on their backs) to create the Space Hulk you must
travel through to win the game.

left blip pile and right blip pile The radar displays tell you the number of
Genestealers to place in the left and right Blip piles to start the game. These are
side-specific, and will change with each new Location card you encounter.

triangles, center

These indicate how many Genestealers are spawned when

an Event card is turned over during the game. These two values remain constant
throughout a game. These are not side-specific.

The Major and Minor Spawn Icons

These triangle icons appear on the left and right
of every Event card. The triangle color relates to
the triangle on the Setup card, and is an indication
of how many Genestealers are to be spawned.
The bar display behind each triangle, that you
find on Location cards (not on the Setup card)
indicates where they spawn.

The yellow triangle on the Setup Location card

indicates the major spawn value for the game.
When you see it on an Event card, it tells you
the number of Genestealers to spawn. See Where
Genestealers Spawn to learn where.

The white triangle on the Setup Location card

indicates the minor spawn value for the game.
Really, major and minor are meaningless. Just
remember what yellow and white mean for your
Setup card, and thats all you need to know when
spawning occurs.

How to Read an Event Card

Pay attention to the Terrain around your formation. Do you have a weak
Space Marine in the formation beside a Terrain card with a red- or orangecolored bar display? That may mean trouble.

fluffy title, cool artwork

special ability area This text zone presents you with a situation that may harm or
help your team. If the text starts with Instinct the player who draws it must resolve
it privately and reveal his decision to the other players afterward. If the word is not
present, then it may be shared immediately. Once it is resolved, the three boxed areas at
the bottom of the card come into play. Then it gets ugly.

left box: spawn triangle, bar display Triangle color tells you the number to spawn
(match the color to triangle on the Setup Location card). Bar display color tells you
which Terrain cards will receive that number of spawned genestealers (see box below).

center box: spawn triangle, bar display

The genestealer icon indicates which

Genestealer type is on the move (if just one is in a swarm, the whole swarm moves).
Up/down arrows mean move down (on the left side of the formation) or up (on the
right side) one position. A curved arrow sends the swarm behind the Space Marine.

Genestealers appear more frequently from red and orange Terrain cards. It
may be handy to re-organize the formation with Move + Activate to cover
high-risk Genestealer entry points with more firepower!

Awesome mood. Means nothing.

Translate this as you do for #3.

Where Genestealers Spawn: the Bar Display on an Event Card

The bar displays behind the spawn triangles tell you where the spawn takes
place: which Terrain cards with a matching bar display will receive an influx
of fresh Genestealer meatiness.

The four bar displays

shown on Event cards.

A green bar display of the Event card tells you that all Terrain cards with
green bars will receive the number of Genestealers indicated by the triangle
color. A red bar display refers to Terrains red displays, and so on.

The matching bar

displays shown on
Terrain cards.

The Location Card

Think of location cards as levels you must pass through en route to the objective

In the boardgame version of Space Hulk, players

play out mission scenarios with objectives. A
collection of these comprises a focused campaign.

Lacking specific missions, Death Angel employs

a number of mechanisms to give the card game
version great variability and replayability.

Each Location card contains a description

of the environment your Space Marines have just entered, along with special
instructions or effects that apply to this location.

location name and special ability

If the card states Upon Entering (as shown here) then the formation must resolve
some state of affairs upon first arriving at this Location (after you travel to this
location and reset the Terrain + Blip piles, before continuing with the next phase).

By randomizing the order of Locations, the Events

you encounter, and the number and placement of
Genestealers that spawn, every game is different.

If the card states Activate Control Panel, then it requires a resolution each time a
Terrain card with the Contol Panel is activated while at this Location.

left terrain (and right terrain) These icons show you the Terrain cards to place
on the left (and right) sides of the formation. This is side-specific: icons on the left
of the card go on the left side of the formation, same for the right.

The number and arrow tell you position of the Terrain card. Count from the end
of the formation: an up arrow tells you to count (starting with 1) from the rear of
the formation; a down arrow starts from the front. Not enough Space Marines in the
formation? Place the card in the last position you can count to.

right blip pile (and left blip pile) The radar displays tell you the number of
Genestealers to place in the left and right Blip piles to start the game. These are
side-specific, and will change with each new Location card you encounter.

The Brood Lord Cards

1
1

On the front of Genestealer cards

youll find four different lookseach with a custom
movement symbol and radar background. The head,
tongue, claw, and tail symbols are used to determine
whether a swarm is on the move or holding its
current position.

movement symbol

Heres how it works: The last item to resolve on an

Event card is Genestealer movement. Compare the
swarm movement symbol on the Event card to those on
all Genestealers in your swarms. Every time you find a
match, it means the entire swarm that had the match
will move in the direction shown on the Event card.
Up/down arrows mean the swarm moves one position:
down on the left side of the formation, up on the right
side. A curved arrow sends the swarm behind the Space
Marine (unless it is already there) at their position.

brood lord die roll adjustment

Brood Lords are more difficult to kill.

On the two Brood Lord cards youll
find this -1 symbol, indicating that
you should subtract 1 from the result
when rolling a Brood Lord. Good luck,
Marine.

Since
Brood Lords are more likely to be
restless and on the move, their cards
display two movement symbols. If
either symbol matches the Event card,
then this swarm will move in the
manner indicated by the Event card.
brood lord movement symbol

The Space Marines

Arnold, Sylvester, Chuck, Steven, and Claude all rolled into one

Space Marine cards are two-sided, with the

same description on each side, but the cards
orientation flip-flopped. This allows the Marines
to be turned to face the left or the right a critical
ability since they must face their enemies in order

to attack them, or better defend against them.

When Genestealers are on the move (triggered
by an Event card, typically) swarms step in a
counter- (or anti-) clockwise direction around
the formation, or they may jump from the facing

side to the same position on the opposite side of a

Marine.
You may wish to stagger your formations
facing so that it is better prepared for surprises
like this.

attack range

Think of this as how far can this Marine

shoot? Values range from 03, and attacks
are only on his facing side. Zero means he
can only blast a swarm at his position. One
means he can hit swarms that are within 1
Marine. Two = 2 Marines. Three = thats
Brother Leons sweet spot; he can hit targets
up to 3 positions above and 3 positions
below. Tip: A good Marine to keep near the
center of the formation.

genestealer movement chevron (down)

In the opposing corners of the Space Marine

cards youll find a symbol indicating which
direction Genestealer swarms will move
when an Event card is drawn and there is a
Genestealer in the swarm that has a matching
symbol.
On the left side of the card, the chevron
always points down.

genestealer movement chevron (up)

In this corner of the Space Marine card youll

find this chevron indicating which direction
a Genestealer swarm is going to go if an
Event card triggers movement.
On the right side of the Space Marine card,
this symbol always points upward.

fluff text (beside dramatic artwork)

Here youll find some background story that

fleshes out a bit of information about the
Space Marine.
Unlike the text on an Action card that offers
unique bonus abilities, this text provides
more insight into the Marine ego than to the
games strategies.
The illustration is just totally cool.

facing

A Space Marines facing is critical:

He can only attack swarms that he faces.
He can use Support Tokens to force a reroll when he is attacked only if he is facing
the attacking swarm
He can only activate a Terrain card that
has an activation ability when facing it.
If he is not facing a swarm: he cannot
attack, cannot use Support tokens, and is
at the mercy of the die roll as it is.

The Action Cards

You want a piece of me?

Death Angel allows you to take command of your

Combat Teams through these three action cards,
which you select in secret, then reveal to the other
players.

1 who goes first number

These numbers come into play once all
players have revealed their chosen Action for
the round. Lowest number goes first, then
next lowest, and so on up to the highest.
Support actions occur first, Move + Activate
second, and Attack third. Plan accordingly!

Note that the card types Attack, Support, and

Move + Activate feature both a normal action
associated with the card type and described in the
manual only, plus a special ability described on the
card itself.

fluff title

Make sure you take both of these into consideration

during your turn. Every advantage helps.

hint

The card name adds some flavor to the game,

and provides some sense of what the bonus
ability allows. Otherwise, it is not critical to
pay attention to the card titles at the top.

action card type

This label defines the card type: either Attack

(each of your Marines engages in one fight),
Support (your team gains 1 support token),
or Move + Activate (optional changes in
position, and/or facing, and/or activation of
a control panel terrain card).

4

special ability

Remember to check this text often during a game. Most cards have a
bonus that can offer your Marines an advantage. Its easy to overlook or
forget these in the heat of battle. Refer back to these frequently!

The bonus may modify the selected action (as it does with the Attack card,
above left) or it may allow an additional action (as it does with both the
Support and Move + Activate cards, above) if conditions allow.
