RESULTS & DISCUSSION

B. Illegal drugs or substance that the youths mostly used.

The researchers data shows that the substance that are commonly used are
marijuana, shabu and rugby . Out of 20 respondents, 16 answered they used shabu,
11 answered they used marijuana and 1 answered he used rugby. The data implies
that the most commonly abused drugs in Nasipit Agusan del Norte is shabu and
marijuana, in which 80 percent of the respondents said that they used shabu and 55
percentey marked yes that they used marijuana . Availability of the said substances
in their community and because it can also be bought in a most affordable price
compared to other illegal drugs or substances such as heroine and cocaine are
found to be the reason, as the respondents of this study is youth which is
biologically dependent from their parents income.
C. Factors that influences them to use drugs.
Based on the gathered data the main factors that drove the youth in Nasipit
Agusan del Norte to use illegal drugs is to satisfy their curiosity, to boost confidence
, to gain popularity, to fit in and to kill time. The data identifies that the most
possible reason why they use illegal drugs or substances is merely because of
curiosity since 19 out of 20 respondents marked it check. On the other hand 14 out
of 20 answered to boost confidence, 7 out of 20 to kill time , 5 out of 20 to fit in and
2 answered to gain popularity. From the gathered data the most possible factor that
drove the youth to use of illegal drugs is because of their curiosity ,as 95 percents
of the participants answered it yes . Youth has its desire to discover new
experiences they are often motivated to seek those they perceive as thrilling or
daring. . They are biologically wired to seek new experiences and take risks, as
well as to carve out their own identity. Trying drugs may fulfill all of these normal
developmental drives, but in an unhealthy way that can have very serious long-term
consequences(Principles of Adolescent Substance Use Disorder Treatment: A
Research-Based Guide,2014). Meanwhile, to boost their confidence is one of the
possible reason the respondents of this study answered, since 70 percent of them
confirmed that they use illegal drugs or substances to gain confidence to their
selves. Ours is a very competitive society, in which the pressure to perform
athletically and academically can be intense. Some adolescents may turn to certain
drugs like illegal or prescription stimulants because they think those substances will
enhance or improve their performance (Principles of Adolescent Substance Use
Disorder Treatment: A Research-Based Guide,2014). The data also injected that 35
percent of the respondent used drugs because of boredom. They used it for pastime
and such beliefs that drugs are cool or harmless make it more likely that an
adolescent will use drugs. One of the foreseen reason why youth in Nasipit Agusan
del norte abused illegal drugs is to fit in, 25 percent answered it yes. Many teens

use drugs because others are doing itor they think others are doing it and they
fear not being accepted in a social circle that includes drug-using peers. On the
other hand others also marked that they also used drug for popularitys sake. Many
are reacting to peer pressure and believe turning to drugs and alcohol is how to
become popular in high school.

D. People who influence them to use drugs.

According from the figure the one who influences them most is friends,
classmates , and popular media. 80 percent answered that they are being
influenced by their friends who uses drugs. The National Institute on Drug Abuse
reports that peers have a large influence on drug-abusing behavior. Many teens use
drugs for the first time to avoid being stigmatized by their friends or to impress
others. It is well established that adolescents who have drug-using friends are
more likely to use drugs themselves (Ary, Tildesley, Hops, & Andrews, 1993; Windle,
2000). Friends not only provide immediate access to substances, but also model
drug using behavior and help shape beliefs and positive attitudes toward the use of
drugs (Farrell & White, 1998). Adolescents are significantly more likely to use
substances if they believe close friends are using and that substance use is
common among their larger group of peers (Bauman, Botvin, & Botvin, 1992).
Another, 25 percent answered that their classmates influences them to engage in
illegal drugs which is some of them are found to be their friends. Teens in a justreleased national study reported that nearly one in five of their classmates drink,
use drugs and smoke during the school day, and more than a third said it is fairly
easy to do so without getting caught. While only 5 percent person answered that
the popular media influences them to use drugs, this maybe because youth
nowadays are more exposed to social media such as Facebook , Twitter ,etc, which
is a commonplace for different advertisement such as illegal drugs. A new NIDAfunded study analyzed the content and demographic reach of a popular promarijuana Twitter handle in 2013 and found that only ten percent of the messages
mentioned any risky behaviors associated with marijuana use.

E. Benefits in using illegal drugs.

In figure # iit indicates that the only possible benefit in using illegal drugs is
strengthened bond with peers. Another potentially important dimension of peer
influence on substance use is the quality of the relationships adolescents have with
their friends. According to some research investigators have found that conflict and
hostility in friendships have been associated with greater substance use (Dishion,
Capaldi, Spracklen, & Li, 1995; Windle, 1994) The quality of friendships between
deviant peers, where substance use is most likely to occur, tends to be
characterized by noxious behaviors (e,g., using obscene gestures, hitting, poking,
grabbing, pushing) and reciprocity of negative interactions (Dishion, Andrews, &
Crosby, 1995). However, because characteristics of ones friends behaviors (e.g.,
substance use) and the quality of friendships tend to overlap, it is possible that
friendship quality adds little to the prediction of substance use after the deviancy of
the friend is taken into account.
F. Feeling in using illegal drugs.

In figure # identifies the possible feeling that one may feel when they use illegal
drugs. Based on their answers, it could make them happy, boost their confidence, it
makes them feel brave and strong. After sessions with illegal drugs or substances,
they also answered that it can make them feel sleepy and guilty. 75 percent of the
respondent answered that it could make them happy and could also make them feel
brave and strong. Use of illegal drugs elevate the mood of the users .According to
Meanwhile, 14 answered it makes them feel confident, 3 answered they felt guilty
afterwards and only 1 answered that it makes him feel sleepy.

0

8 10 12 14 16 18 20

From the graph above, it can be inferred that the most of the respondents had
already talked to their parents about their addiction. Some tried to steer their
attention from illegal drugs and substances to sports like basketball, etc., others
participated activities like youth camps, booth camps, etc., while others have tried
talking to a professional about their addiction, and some have tried reaching out to
more responsible friends to help them steer their attention away from illegal drugs
and substances. Out of 20, 15 have already talked to their parents about their
addiction, 9 tried steering their attention from illegal drugs to sports like basketball,
4 have tried joining activities like youth camps, booth camps, etc, 3 have tried to
talk to a professional and only 1 havce tried reaching out with more responsible
friends.
