Quick Write:Unit 4 Community
The individual is an integral and essential part of the community as every individual
contributes to the essence and well-being of the community, as a whole. As individuals, it is our
responsibility to create a community whereby all individuals are treated equally, as well as with
respect and dignity. I, as an individual, strive towards learning about others differences in an
effort to develop a better appreciation for cultural, racial, religious, and gender diversity. In
doing so, I am accepting and include others within the community, which allows us to work
together to contribute to societys well-being by genuinely appreciating one another. I
consistently make an effort to ask my peers questions that will help me understand and value
their heritage, religious beliefs, and gender orientation, hoping that other peers around me will
also understand and respect these differences. One individual can make a huge difference in
making the community an accepting and welcoming environment.
Not only, is it vital that I, as an individual, create an accepting and welcoming
environment, but that the community, in turn, ensure that every individual is included and treated
with dignity and compassion. Amongst my group of friends, I am the only Latina, but that is
irrelevant as my friends cherish me for the person I am, and accept my differences. My friends
are an example of how a community should treat individuals by including others and
appreciating their diversity. They do not differentiate or marginalize me, as a community should
not disregard others based on their differences, but instead welcome and value others as a
result of their rich diversity. In valuing differences, the community allows individuals to feel that
they are an important and vital part of society, allowing them to contribute to the overall greater
good. Our unique and beautiful cultures as well as individualism make our community a better
world as they foster a societal understanding of the differences that contribute to the distinct and
exceptional essence of our community.
