Pre-lesson Assignments and/or Student Prior Knowledge
Students will be familiar with addition and finding the sum. Students will have experience
creating a number problem. Students have not played this math game previously.
Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.5
Relate counting to addition and subtraction (e.g., by counting on 2 to add 2).
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.OA.C.6
Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use
strategies such as counting on.

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives

Assessment

Students will be able to make a number

problem given two numbers.

Students will roll two die and create a number

problem, teacher will assess students for ability
to add using the dice.

Students will be able to find the sum.

Students will add the addends and find the

sum. Teacher will assess students for
knowledge of sum by asking what the total is.

Students will be able to add within 20.

Students will add two numbers together/count

on with the numbers rolled. Teacher will assess
for correct sums.

Materials/Resources: (List materials, include any online or book references and resources)
2 paint sticks
4 number dice
20 unifix cubes of one color
20 unifix cubes of a different color
Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

Teacher will number the paint sticks from 10-20 and set up dice and cubes at the center
prior to math centers.

Step by Step plan (numbered):

1. Lesson beginning: Teacher will explain rules of the game walk the plank.
Each player lines their cubes along the plank, aligning them with the numbers written on the
plank
Player 1 rolls the number cubes/dice and adds them together and then removes the OTHER
player's cube next to that number
Player 2 does the same
Players take turns adding together their numbers and removing the OTHER player's cubes
The first player to collect all of the other player's cubes is the winner.
2. Teacher will model the game to students by rolling the die, adding the numbers and taking
the other players corresponding cube. Teacher will monitor students playing the game to
assess their understanding and keep them on task.
3. Closing: Teacher will assess students during the game: Teacher will ask, What are the
addends? Teacher will ask students, What is the sum?
Key Questions (that you will ask):
What are the addends?
What is the number problem?
What is the sum?
Logistics:
Timing: 10 minutes
.
Transitions: Groups will rotate centers every 10 minutes, signaled by a bell.
Classroom Management:

Teacher will enforce usual center rules

Observe to make sure students are on task

Differentiation

Teacher will be stationed at the center to guide students and give extra support to those
who need more help
Teacher will prompt students who are struggling to use fingers to count on or another
