Former presidential candidate Mun Kuk-hyon presented Judith
Hernandez under the Republic of Korea Party to the National
Assembly of South Korea.
S eoul, South Korea -- Amid interviews from both
local and foreign media, invitations and work, Judith
Hernandez, a foreign-born political candidate last
election in South Korea recently confirmed her plans to
continue the programs for 116,000 Korean spouses and
education for multicultural learners as support to the
migrant workers.
Her experiences as a foreign wife and the current issues
about marital problems which result to suicidal cases
and trauma of the Korean spouses motivated her of
running for a congressional seat to represent the
653,064 of the migrant workers.

O lympic Park, Seoul - The Philippines showcased
the culture and talents of the Cordillerans in the
4th International Migrants’ Arirang Festival as spon-
sored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism
and the Migrants’ Arirang of South Korea last May 11.
With this year’s theme “Journey to the World Village”,
the Yongsan Shalom House Chaplain Fr. Peter Choi
together with Brenda Bryan and Anthony Pilamon in
full support invited the Cordillera Brotherhood
Organization (CBO).
Chapter groups of the CBO from Bontoc, Mabuda and
Kiangan performed traditional Igorot dances like Talik,
Pattong, Tayaw, Balangbang and a handkerchief
dance.
Also, the group featured some native costumes from
the mountainous region of the Philippines and
performed live rock, Korean and western country

Ambassador to South Korea Luis T. Cruz and guests
as he celebrated his birthday last Apr. 30.
In his homily which highlighted the celebration, he
shared about one’s happiness which is a matter of
attitude and choice. “Acceptance to be happy to
accept God’s grace, to become channel of God’s
grace for others and be truthful to God’s calling,” Fr.

Rights Welfare Organization Filipino Community
(HRWOFC) held the Opening Ceremony of the 2nd
Basketball Tournament at the Cheongju Girls Middle
School Gymnasium last May 11.
The annual sports event aimed to promote sports-
manship and unity among the Filipino communities
living in CheongJu and nearby places.

S outh Korea has been regarded as an ideal

destination for Filipinos working overseas
either high or low skilled type of job like engi-
neers, factory workers, traders, domestic
helpers and entertainers which comprised the
51,051 Pinoy workers in the peninsula.

Physical abuses, contract violation of some

employers, overworked and underpaid, prostitu-
tion, 3D jobs (dirty, difficult and dangerous),
discrimination and other issues like MC-04 and
human trafficking are perennial challenges
which confront Juan dela Cruz.

Despite of these problems, Pinoy workers have

been decisive and determined even more in
achieving the bittersweet “Korean Dream”. This
has made a dream come true of the unem-
ployed, underachiever, and underestimated
individuals way back home and who have made
a difference in a foreign land and highly
regarded now as the living heroes of the land.

Dirty hands, tiresome and unprotected body,

weary eyes while determination, inspiration and
strong faith to God our workers uphold instead
of armaments as weapons in the fight of life
against poverty and social disapproval.
The continuous plight of Pinoy workers in South
Korea is a remarkable indication that we’ve
been considerably identified as partners of the
Korean government towards economic stability
and progress.
With the current socio-economic crises in the
Philippines, economists reported that the
remittances from the people working overseas
are the saving lifelines of the country like the
Philippines during turbulent times.
To reciprocate the valuable contributions of
the OFWs to the economy of the country, the
government should provide realistic and
immediate livelihood programs to elevate or
support the living conditions of the workers who
opted to stay for their families.
Labor Day celebration would be more meaningful
as we pay tribute to our people who have been
fighting against suppression, prejudice and
poverty and give the grand salute to the strong
determination and industry set by the country’s
living heroes.

Greener pasture can’t be equated with the salary per
se. Filipino migrant workers might have different
opinions about this based on individual experiences.
Some people might be lucky of having a good job
based on higher salary and fair treatment from their
employers. However, there are Filipino workers
suffering from different forms of violations such as
verbal, physical or even sexual abuses. Working for
more than 10 hours per day, not receiving an over-
time pay, not having a rest day, rudeness and mal-
treatment from the employers, racial discrimination,
gender inequality and so on just make things life
more difficult.

It is hard not to crave for ‘adobo’ or ‘kare-kare’ if

they can only be eaten twice or even once a
month here in Korea. Food is such a pleasure that
gratifies people in so many ways. The most impor-
tant element in having a good food is through cook-
ing which is the process made through the so-called
labor of love.
The things mentioned above might raise confusion
on what is the topic of this article. This isn’t about
culture specifically Filipino foods; this is actually
about the call for the celebration and appreciation of
labor as an essential element in the economy espe-
