Fundamentals of Project Management Fall-2016

Course Outline * Farid Zafar


Objective:
After the conclusion of this class (16-weeks of study), the student should have a clear
concept about a Project and Project Management. He should be able to know:

How a project is conceived and how to prepare the feasibility study and proposal
How does a project start, what are deliverables, what is the sequence of a project
What are the most important moments for a project management during the
course of a project planning?
What are baselines and what role do they play.
How change can be incorporated into a project after the project management plan
is approved.
All the knowledge areas.
All process groups.
All processes within a knowledge area.
All terms of project management that are used in the PMBoK.
How does ITTO work.
How a project conducted and how the responsibilities are shared?

Course of Study:

Topics to be covered
Introduction. Orientation related with University Regulations,
Grading System, Examination break-up, Issuance of Letters
from BU for Probation, Chance and Drop-out, Scholarships
available, Fee submission rules, Registration Rules, Attendance
Rules, Dress Code to Follow, Smoking and other matters of
student concern. Selection of a CR. Discussion of how the
course would be taught and how far the student will benefit
from it.
First Topic of Study: What is a project. Interactive recording
and then screening out what is not relevant. Repeat till the
keywords match the definition.
Revision from week-1. Major Projects in the country and
abroad. What is project management? Pre-Project Activities,
what factors are considered for preparing a Project Proposal,
what can be the outcome of a Project Proposal. What is
Program and Portfolio management, what is PMO? The
difference between project management and production
management? What is SWOT? How SWOT can affect Project
Management and how to manage Weaknesses and Threats.
What are Enterprise Environment Factors and how they
influence Project Management. What are Organizational
Process Assets and how do they help in planning / managing

Project Procurement & Contract Management: What is
Procurement? How procurement is different from other
Knowledge Areas of Project Management? How procurement is
triggered? How to do Procurement in Projects. What are the
different terms used in procurements? Complete procurement
process. Role of contracting and types of contracts.
What are Contracts? How many contracts are used in Project
Management? Details of each Contract Type with example.
Different documents used in Procurement. How to request for a
Proposal and What is a Procurement Proposal.
Project Week (15) marks, includes a project report
based on the learning from the project attended.
Students not going for the project are given an
assignment, covering project marks.
Detail report format to be shared based on the project
to be visited.

go for the Project. This assignment will also be of 15
marks and would be related with a Project and
students learning this far.
Project Stakeholder Management:
How to create stakeholder register? What kind of Stakeholder
do we face in Projects? How to manage importance of
stakeholders and how to cater for their engagements. How
their involvement can reduce project failures? What happens if
a stakeholder rejects a project or any phase of a project?

permitting. These activities can also take place subject wise in
the above classes. Any overflow from the above classes will
also be managed in this class.
