II of Davao Oriental.
Respondents of this study came from the residents of District II of Davao Oriental.
METHODOLOGY
Participants
The respondents of this study are the residents of District II of Davao Oriental. 10
household per municipality were surveyed to assess the current condition of adult literacy and
out-of-school youth. 10 teachers per school per municipality were also surveyed to assess the
need for tutorial among the students within the area of interest.
Data Collection
Data were collected by a survey conducted by the researchers using a predefined
questionnaire. Separate questionnaire were made to assess the current condition of adult literacy
and out-of-school youth and another questionnaire for the need for tutorials.
Under the questionnaire for the need for tutorials, it comprised of two phases. Phase-A is
for Reading and Phase B for Mathematics.
Data Analysis
Spreadsheets were prepared to consolidate the data gathered. Measures of Central
Tendency were used as a tool to analyze and interpret the data.
CONCLUSION
Students are were not attended well enough in their reading skills since the teachers are
always or almost always teaching reading as a whole class. Reading skills of students will not
really develop because the level of practice for reading is not high and consistent. Students have
a least chance of developing their reading ability because the type of texts being used by the
teacher are not varied.
In giving reading instruction, students will not likely to learn reading strategies because
teachers are always reading aloud the texts to the whole class. There is no opportunity for
students to have a one-on-one encounter with the teacher.
Teachers are not well-informed on the reading abilities of their students because they
rarely conduct assessment that would really test the reading skills of their students. That is why,
no matter what preparation they will make as long as they dont know the true or actual reading
skills of students and they dont know what are the needs of their learners, they will surely end
up failing.
There is really a need for tutorials in mathematics among the students based on the result
of the survey. More than half of the class needs remedial instruction. Their overall mathematics
proficiency vary greatly. Most falls below average and others are average only.
Mostly, the highest educational attainment among adults is either elementary or high
school level. They hardly can read articles especially if the medium is in English language.
RECOMMENDATIONS
The following are recommended:
emphasis.
Worktexts or worksheets should be given to students to practice reading
even at home
Give varied types of texts to be read by the students
Emphasize small-group reading
Always employ comprehension check through different assessment
activities
Tutorials and remediation in Math should be given
Out-of-school youth should attend a tutorial for reading and mathematics
In mathematics, they should taught the different and basic number
concepts as well as the different concepts in operation which are highly
underserved youth.
To increase the likelihood that an ample array of program opportunities
will be available, communities should put in place some locally
appropriate mechanism for monitoring the availability, accessibility, and
organizations
and
collaborative
