Note-Taking Guide

102.01 Explain design concepts used to create digital graphics.

Elements of
Design

Elements of design are color, line, shape, and texture.

Color

Color identify objects in designs and it creates visual flow. It also

communicates feelings and moods towards the audience and it
consists of hue, saturation, and brightness.

Complementary
Colors

Complementary colors are colors that are on a color wheel that can
be mixed together if theyre across from each other.

Hue

Hue is a name given to a color. Hue is a variety of different

individual colors that can be created by changing saturation and
brightness.

Saturation

Saturation is the amount of hue that is used in a particular color.

Brightness

Brightness is when adding black or white to change a colors

appearance by changing the brightness to dark or light.

Line

Lines give directions and create movement within the design. There
are thick and thin lines that indicate importance and quick
movement. Lines can be vertical, horizontal, diagonal, or curved.

Shape

Shape is the form of an object when lines enclose a space. It can be

used to identify objects and there are three basic shapes; circle,
square, and triangle.

Texture

Texture is the creation of an illusion of a surface appearance by a

combination of dots, lines, and colors. It also adds depth and
dimension to a specific design.

Principles of
Design

The principles of design are proportion, balance, rhythm, emphasis,

and unity/harmony.

102.01 Explain design concepts used to create digital graphics.

Proportion

Proportion is the size relationship between components within a

design. It can be between one component of one design and
another component or between a component and the whole design.

Balance

Balance is to indicate how design elements are arranged either

horizontally or vertically on the canvas. There are two types of
balance; formal and informal balance. Formal balance or
symmetrical balance is a design that is exactly equal on both sides.
Informal balance or asymmetrical balance is a design where both
sides are not equal, but are balanced.

Rhythm

Rhythm is the creation of feeling of movement in a design that is

generated through the repetition of lines, colors, shapes, and
textures.

Emphasis

Emphasis is the center of interest within a design and it is a

component that is noticed first by the audience. In a design,
emphasis can create a visual flow.

Unity/Harmony

Unity/Harmony is when all components look as if they belong

together and its achieved when the design elements and principles
are used effectively and properly.

102.01 Explain design concepts used to create digital graphics.

Digital Graphics

Digital graphics are images or design that are created or edited by

a computer. Digital graphics; drawings, logos, photos, advertising,
buttons, icons, diagrams, and charts.

Bitmap Graphics

Bitmap graphics use square pixels that have assigned colors and it
lose clarity when its zoomed in. Bitmap Graphics are also known as
raster graphics.

Vector Graphics

Vector Graphics use mathematical formulas and it does not lose

clarity when zoomed in. It is the best type of graphic for printing in
a large scale.

Resolution

Resolution describes the bitmap graphics clarity and it is

determined and defined by the number of PPI (pixels per inch).
There are two types of resolution; low and high resolutions. Low
resolution has blurry appearance and is relatively small. High
resolution has a very clear appearance and is relatively large.

Color Modes

Color modes; black & white, grayscale, true color, RGB (red, green,
and blue), and CMYK (cyan, yellow, magenta, and black). Grayscale
uses black, white, and all shades of gray in between. True color
uses all color combinations. RGB optimized for viewing and CMYK
optimized for printing purposes.

Color depth is the number of distinct colors for display.

Color Depth

~Color Mode~
*1-Bit: black and white
*8-Bit: indexed color
*24-Bit: true color
