Introduction

This document describes how to update TEMS software on Sony mobile phones using Sony
PC Companion.

Performing a Software Update

2.1

Backup TEMS Diagnostics License

The TEMS diagnostic license, TEMS_v1.lic, is stored on the internal sdcard. Since this area
will be wiped during the update procedure it is necessary to make a backup of the license file
before proceeding.
1. Attach USB cable and accept allow usb debugging dialog
2. Run the provided BackupLicense.bat
3. You should now be able to see the extracted TEMS_v1.lic file in the same location as
the BackupLicense.bat

2.2

InstallingSony PC Companion

Follow these steps to install Sony PC Companion:


1. Start your phone and connect it to a computerby means of a USB cable.
2. Phone:The dialog below will appear. Tap the Installbutton to install Sony PC Companion
on the computer.

3. Computer: If the popup shown below appears, select Run Startme.exe.In the
subsequent installer popup, click Installto start the installation,then follow the on-screen
instructions to complete it.

4. After installing PC Companion on your computer, disconnect your phone before


downloading the software updates (section 2.3).

2.3

Updatingthe Phone Software using PC Companion

Follow these steps:


1. Make sure that your phone is turned off and not attached to the PC.
2. Computer:Launch PC Companion from the Windows Start menu:

3. Computer: In the Support Zone application, click Start(top left screenshot below) and
select the Phone / Tablet Software Updateoption. Then follow the on-screen
instructions:Click the Start button (top right screenshot) and then the repair my phone /
tablet link (bottom screenshot).
Note: Do not disconnect the USB cable while updating your phone, as this might damage
the content being transferred.

4. Computer: Select the device in question from the list and press next. If your device
model is not in the list, select Another phone / tablet. You will be presented with an
extensive list of devices to select from.

5. Computer: After the device selection, there are a number of dialogs in which you must
acknowledge that data on the device will be lost, etc. Follow the on-screen instructions.
6. Computer:You will eventually be presented a dialog in which it is explained how you
must attach your device to the PC via an USB cable. Follow the on-screen instructions.

Note:A message Your phone is up to date appearsat the top of the PC Companion
window when you connectyour phone, whether or not the phone in fact has the
latest TEMS software version installed. Therefore, please ignore this message
andalways follow the steps given above. (Unfortunately, Sony PC Companion
does not tell in advance which version it is going to upgrade to, but only notifies
you of the new version number after the upgrade is complete. For this reason, it is
not possible to determine beforehand whether or not the phone already has the
latest TEMS software.)

Inspecting the Version of Installed Software

Perform the following actions on the phone:

Go to the home screen.

Go to ApplicationsSettings.

Scroll down to About phone and tap this item.

Scroll down to Build number. The string in this entry shows the phone software revision.

Configure Device

a) Disable Verify apps


Go to Settings Security
Uncheck Verify apps
b) Enable developer options menu and USB debugging
Go to Settings About phone
Click on Build number until developer mode is enabled (click ~7 times)
c) Enable USB debugging
Go to Settings Developer options
Enable USB debugging
d) Disable Wi-Fi background scanning
Settings Wi-Fi (three dots) Advanced.
Disable Scanning always available.

2.6

Restore TEMS Diagnostics License

1. Attach USB cable and accept allow usb debugging dialog


2. Run the provided RestoreLicense.bat
3. Reboot the device
