The VL5 Vertex Laser

The VL5 Vertex Laser is an advanced field solution

for high accuracy results in height, distance and angle
measurements. With an integrated tilt sensor and laser
and ultrasound technology, the VL5 offers a variety of
method options for any situation and surrounding. The
ready results are swiftly presented and can be stored,
processed and/or transferred wirelessly to external units.

The VL5 is the most complete, compatible and communicative field

measuring instrument
Great accuracy, rugged construction, field ready
Ultrasound and laser combination technology
High visibility reinforced instrument housing
Angle compensated/horizontal distance value and tilt sensor
Extended range, height and angle measurements as 1, 2 or 3-point
measuring, with or without reference
Data storage and processing capacity
Hazard trees safety distance and delta height functionality
Custom programming possibilities for special user areas
Red cross aim for spotting of individual and thin objects
Adjustable laser filter
Rechargeable low-consuming Li-Ion battery
Easy operation with field adapted keypad and step-through menu

The ultrasound method is mainly used to measure in sample plots and

for tree heights in the forest. The potent laser in the VL5 instrument can
be used to measure without transponder and in open terrain. A built-in
mounting point for camera-type monopod if a steady aim is required for
longer distances.

The VL5 instrument is produced for professional measuring work in

forest and field. For a steady aim, use the camera type monopod with a
footstep bracket, art. no. 15-103-1531. The VL5 has a custom mounting
point (1/4) to fasten the monopod. The instrument illuminated red
cross aim with a 1x magnification improves spotting of individual trees,
thin lines and other objects.

The built-in VL5 Li-Ion

battery can be charged in
the office, the car or with
a portable power bank.

Transponder T3 for ultrasound mesuring (1 ea AA 1.5V alkaline battery necessary

for T3, power consumption 9mW). Adapter and monopod staff, 4-parts (33-140cm)
weight approx. 270g/9.5oz. Aluminum transport/storing case. See user manual for
more details.

VL5 15-103-1020 compl. 360 package/set incl. VL5 instrument, transponder T3, plot centre staff, adapter, and charging cable.
15-103-1021 VL5 60 package/set incl. VL5 instrument, transponder T3, charging cable and adapter.
15-103-1022 VL5 measuring instrument only. User instructions included. Aluminum transport case. Built-in Li-Ion battery in measuring
instrument. Transponder uses AA battery that may or may not be included in the case depending on shipping destination.

With built-in BAF-factors, storing capacity and functions to calculate for example average stand height, the
VL5 is an efficient instrument system in circular sample plot measuring and for reverse prism cruising.

Ultrasound is recommended when working in dense forest and when sighting is

obscured by branches and shrubs. The VL5 is excellent to use for circular sample plot
measurement and reverse prism cruise with preset basal area factors. (Reverse prism
factors/BAF factors 5-50 English; 0.5-9 Metric) . Distances from approx. 10cm/3,9
to approx 25-30 meters/80-100ft can be measured with the ultrasound method. The
distance range is situation depending (weather, temperature etc). The VL5 includes all
functions from the well-known Vertex IV instrument system.
To perform sample plot measurements with the VL5, the recommended instrument
configuration is VL5-360, with package including the VL5 measuring instrument, T3
transponder, monopod plot staff, adapter and charging cables.

The Transponder T3 is water resistant, rugged and has a simple

construction in a bright, visible color. T3 uses one AA battery and it
is compatible with Haglf instruments DP DME, Vertex IV, DME
and VL Vertex Laser. The transponder is equipped with a pin to
place directly on a tree stem. It can also be used with an adapter and
monopod staff to measure in a full circle in sample plot work. Art.
no. Transponder T3 orange: 15-104-1012. Diameter T3: 70mm/2.8.
Weight: 85g/3.4oz. 1 x 1.5V AA alkaline battery, consumption max.
9mW. The Monopod plot staff is produced in sturdy light-weight,
bright blue aluminum material with a pointy end.
Art. no. Monopod plot staff: 15-104-1013. Height when assembled
130cm/50.7, weight approx. 240g/9.6oz.
The Adapter is mounted on the plot staff and allows for measuring
in a full 360 circle. Art. no. Adapter 15-104-1011. Plastic, height
approx. 47mm/1.88, weight approx. 40g/1.6oz.

The VL5 laser is great when you wish to measure

heights without using a transponder, and for long
range measuring in open terrain. The capacity
to measure from less than 0,5m/1.5ft up to 700
meters/2300ft with high accuracy is useful in
many work areas, such as the utility industry. A
laser filter allows for flexible measuring, where
you can select to measure the closest object,
the farthest object or the object that submits
the strongest signal. Recommended package
configuration VL5-60, including VL5 instrument
and T3 transponder, charging cable and adapter.
The T3 transponder can be used as a reference
point for laser measurements.

The VL5 has integrated functions for security distance measuring on

borderline trees and to measure power line sag. The instrument is useful
for maintenance work along power lines and in the utility industry.
Wireless result transfer to computer
calipers and handhelds.
