WINTER IN THE HIGH COUNTRY

OUR SUNDAY
WORSHIP
SCHEDULE

Based on an assessment of unemployment rate, median household income, population growth, and assessed property value per capita, Ashe County has been
designated a Tier 1 county since 2015. According to Ashe Mountain Times, Tier 1
is any county with a population less than 50,000 people and a poverty rate of 19
percent or greater.

10:00 A.M.

Tier designations qualify counties for programs that assist in economic development and serve as a mechanism to channel funds for improvements to less populated areas of the state.

ON THE INSIDE

Our People
Responsibilities
Children, Youth
and Families
Calendar

Ashe County has many wonderful attributes for which we are grateful. As a Tier
One county, the county is also one of the 40 poorest and least developed counties in North Carolina. I am grateful that our church has stepped up to meet the
needs of our neighbors through our
Food Pantry and Pastors Discretionary
Fund.
Our Food Pantry continues to grow and
change. Where we used to have one
source of food, we now have five. Grier
Hurley even donates eggs from her
chickens! We have purchased two new
refrigerators with donations recently,
and volunteers are doing new tasks like
picking up food from the grocery store
on the weekends and moving furniture
to make room for new equipment.

2
5 Winter is especially difficult in the High Country, and the Pastors Discretionary
Fund provides for electricity, fuel, and basic necessities for our neighbors. None
6 of this is possible without your help! When we respond to needs of people, we
7 see the face of Christ among us in the people we serve and in the people serving.
I am grateful that we make a difference in this place. Thank you for being a significant part of this effort by committing your time, money and service. If you have
not found your way to serve yet, we have opportunities for everyone, just ask!
Serving is a witness to the love of Christ shining through!

FOOD PANTRY QUALIFIES FOR MATCHING GRANT

Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest N.C. selected Jefferson
United Methodist Food Pantry to receive a matching grant for
food. This "capacity building grant" is designed to increase our
church's capacity to serve our hungry neighbors. We need to
collect matching donations to the food pantry before January 20
to receive the grant. You may make a gift to the church and put
"Food Pantry" on the memo line if you wish to donate. Thank
you!

MILLER FAMILY TO CELEBRATE

The Revs. Perry and Karen Miller are pleased to announce the marriage of
their daughter Elizabeth (Liz) to Gabe Hopkins on Wednesday, December 28.

Liz is a 2005 graduate of Asheville High School, and received her bachelors

work for Charities Aid Foundation. Currently, she is Marketing Manager for
Divine Chocolate, an international fair-trade company based in Ghana, Africa;
London, England and Washington D.C. Liz studied in Ghana as part of her
bachelors degree program.
Lizs husband is Gabriel Hopkins, also of Washington, D.C. Originally from
New Jersey, Gabe received his bachelors degree from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and a law degree from the New York University School of Law
in New York City. After serving positions with the New York Supreme Court
and Public Justice, a D.C. law firm, he works for the U.S. Consumer Financial

PASTOR KAREN SERVES ON SECOND HARVEST ADVISORY COUNCIL

There are four locations where people in Ashe County can receive free food:
1.
2.
3.
4.

Sharing Center, now located about 1 1/2 mile from our church on Colvard Street in Jefferson.
Ashe Really Cares, located on Beaver Creek School Road in West Jefferson.
Ashe Outreach Ministries, located at the Riverview Community Center in Creston.
Jefferson United Methodist Food Pantry.

Our church has the only food pantry based in a local church. What binds these four together is that
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina provides the bulk of the food for all of
them. Pastor Karen Miller represents these four agencies on the Advisory Council at Second Harvest. Members of the Second Harvest staff and representatives of various areas of North Carolina
come together in Winston-Salem every other month to discuss matters related to providing food for
hungry people.

HOLIDAY GREETING FROM A SENIOR ADULT

The United Methodist Men are selling peanuts for

$5 to raise money for local missions. Peanuts are
available by contacting Paul Horan at 336-982-2682.
The peanuts are also available at Past and Present
Antiques at 113 N Jefferson Avenue, West Jefferson,
NC 28694. Proprietors Pam and Glen Mores do not
charge a commission on the sale of these peanuts,
which is a very generous gesture.

WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT ISLAM?

A Muslim is a person who follows or practices the religion of Islam, a monotheistic and Abrahamic
religion based on the Quran. Muslims consider the Quran to be the verbatim word of God as revealed to the Islamic prophet and messenger Muhammad. We have heard a lot about Muslims lately. What do we really know about Muslim beliefs and practices? Would you like to learn more about
this ancient religion?

Dr. Rick Laws will be teaching Islamic Belief and Practice 6:30-7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18
and 25 in the parlor at Jefferson United Methodist Church. Dr. Laws has a Doctorate in Ministry from
Carolina Graduate School of Divinity in Greensboro, a Master's of Divinity with Christian Education
from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, and a Bachelor of Science in RadioTV Communications from Western Carolina University in
Cullowhee. He has been teaching full time at the Ashe Campus of
Wilkes Community College since August, 2015 as professor of History, Humanities and Religion.
Dr. Laws is an elder at Wilkes Christian Church in North Wilkesboro NC. You are invited to come and learn more about the Muslim
beliefs and practices. A light meal will be available at 5:30 for $5
for those who make a reservation by the Monday prior to the
meal.

WEDNESDAY NIGHT DINNERS

INCLEMENT WEATHER CLOSINGS

We will be offering a month of Wednesday night

meals in the fellowship hall for $5 per person
per meal, or a maximum of $20 per family per
meal. Laura Kesler will be preparing January
meals. Children are to be attended by an adult,
but it does not have to be the parent. Weekly
clean-up will be shared by the participants. This
is intended to be a fellowship meal at the
church, not carry-out meals.

Church meetings will be cancelled if the entire

school day is cancelled or if school is released
early. If there is a delay and not a cancellation,
the event will most likely be held. Please call the
church to confirm. In the case of inclement
weather on a Sunday, we hope to put out a
phone tree message early enough that everyone
is notified of cancellations. We will also put a
message on the church phone to announce closings. We will have the parking lots scraped if we
have events at the church following inclement
weather.

Meals are for anyone who registers and pays

for the entire month in advance. There are no
refunds if you are unable to attend. You do not
have to be involved in other Wednesday night
activities to attend. The form and money are to
be submitted by the Monday prior to the beginning of the month. The only exceptions are participants in the Islam class, who can sign up by
noon on Monday prior to the class.

The only exception is the Hospitality Committee.

Please call Mitch Phillips at 336-846-8000 if you
have questions about whether the Hospitality
Committee will meet.

NUTS OR NO NUTS?
A few people in our church are very allergic to
tree nuts. When we have covered dish meals,
they would very much appreciate knowing if the
food people bring contains nuts. A simple label
would provide this information, and would be
helpful for those who wish to eat at the church
without worrying about a life threatening allergic
reaction. Thanks!

The Staff Parish Committee met with Pastor Karen in the fall to conduct the required annual review of her work and help her plan for 2017. In
order to meet her goals, she has signed up for
the Study Leave session at Duke Divinity School
scheduled for January 30 February 3. The SPRC
committee hopes that her participation in this
continuing education event will provide her with
the space, time, and resources to further energize and strengthen her ministry.
Study Leave participants have the opportunity to
meet with faculty, attend classes, and connect
with community ministries, in addition to participating in worship at Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School and Duke Chapel.

MIDWAY BAPTIST CHURCH HOSTS HOSPICE

DOCUMENTARY
Midway Baptist Church, across from Wal-Mart, will
host a free community screening of the documentary "Being Mortal" on Saturday, January 14
at 2:00 p.m. The movie delves into the hopes of
patients and families facing terminal illness, shedding light on how a patient's true wishes can be
known and honored. After the screening, participants will have the opportunity to discuss, sign
and notarize Advanced Directives. For more information, please contact Midway Baptist Church
at 336-246-2012.
