THE CONNECTION
The Connection
Based on an assessment of unemployment rate, median household income, population growth, and assessed property value per capita, Ashe County has been
designated a Tier 1 county since 2015. According to Ashe Mountain Times, Tier 1
is any county with a population less than 50,000 people and a poverty rate of 19
percent or greater.

Tier designations qualify counties for programs that assist in economic development and serve as a mechanism to channel funds for improvements to less populated areas of the state.

Ashe County has many wonderful attributes for which we are grateful. As a Tier
One county, the county is also one of the 40 poorest and least developed counties in North Carolina. I am grateful that our church has stepped up to meet the
needs of our neighbors through our
Food Pantry and Pastors Discretionary
Fund.
Our Food Pantry continues to grow and
change. Where we used to have one
source of food, we now have five. Grier
Hurley even donates eggs from her
chickens! We have purchased two new
refrigerators with donations recently,
and volunteers are doing new tasks like
picking up food from the grocery store
on the weekends and moving furniture
to make room for new equipment.
2
5 Winter is especially difficult in the High Country, and the Pastors Discretionary
Fund provides for electricity, fuel, and basic necessities for our neighbors. None
6 of this is possible without your help! When we respond to needs of people, we
7 see the face of Christ among us in the people we serve and in the people serving.
I am grateful that we make a difference in this place. Thank you for being a significant part of this effort by committing your time, money and service. If you have
not found your way to serve yet, we have opportunities for everyone, just ask!
Serving is a witness to the love of Christ shining through!

Our church has the only food pantry based in a local church. What binds these four together is that
Second Harvest Food Bank of Northwest North Carolina provides the bulk of the food for all of
them. Pastor Karen Miller represents these four agencies on the Advisory Council at Second Harvest. Members of the Second Harvest staff and representatives of various areas of North Carolina
come together in Winston-Salem every other month to discuss matters related to providing food for
hungry people.
Dr. Rick Laws will be teaching Islamic Belief and Practice 6:30-7:45 p.m. on Wednesday, January 18

NUTS OR NO NUTS?
A few people in our church are very allergic to
tree nuts. When we have covered dish meals,
they would very much appreciate knowing if the
food people bring contains nuts. A simple label
would provide this information, and would be
helpful for those who wish to eat at the church
without worrying about a life threatening allergic
reaction. Thanks!
The Staff Parish Committee met with Pastor Karen in the fall to conduct the required annual review of her work and help her plan for 2017. In
order to meet her goals, she has signed up for
the Study Leave session at Duke Divinity School
scheduled for January 30 February 3. The SPRC
committee hopes that her participation in this
continuing education event will provide her with
the space, time, and resources to further energize and strengthen her ministry.
Study Leave participants have the opportunity to
meet with faculty, attend classes, and connect
with community ministries, in addition to participating in worship at Goodson Chapel in the Divinity School and Duke Chapel.
