Over 100 parents and community members

of Standard, Rockyford, Hussar and Gleichen
took part Dec. 13 in a walk-through of the new
Wheatland Crossing K-12 School.
The new school was supposed to be partially open this past September for the start of
the fall semester. Due to several complications
including heavy rainfall, manpower shortages
and equipment delays, the school is still not
complete.
However, it seems that the end is finally near.
It is exciting to be where we are, though
not as exciting as where well be shortly, said
Golden Hills School Division Superintendent,
Bevan Daverne.
After months of delays and upsets, a plausible move-in date has been set, although its
not set in stone.
We are planning on a February move at this
point, said Daverne. We have a lot of confidence around when our move-in and completion date will be.
Possible options for move-in dates would be
on the semester change date of Feb. 1. Another
more likely option would be to move into the
new school after the Feb. 20 Family Day week
off school, making move-in day Feb. 27.
Its coming along really well, were feeling
really good about our timelines to finish, and
at this point, this should be a time for some
pretty positive celebration, said Daverne.
Unlike original plans of a staged move-in,
students from all grades will move into the
new school together.
The school, located south of Standard on
Hwy #561, will hold at capacity 450 students.
It would not be crazy to see more families
making the choice to come here next year. We
do have additional room on the property to
add modular classrooms if need be, said Daverne.
Since the school is miles away from any amenities the nearby towns can offer, some creative space-saving decisions had to be made.
For instance, the schools main common area
is large and airy, the ceilings are high and the
windows run the full length of the wall, letting
in a lot of sunlight. Some of the major design
elements throughout the school warrant that
most rooms be dual-purpose.

Grade 4-6 students from Wheatland Crossing entertained a full audience with 16 Christmas
carols at their annual Christmas concert on Dec. 14. The songs ranged from old favourites like
Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer where the crowd got to sing along, to unorthodox carols
such as Everlasting Fruitcake a song about a fruitcake that would just not go away.

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

My name is Adelle Ellis, and I am the
new friendly reporter at the Strathmore
Times. I am very excited to start my work
here and to join in at community events.
You may have seen me around before
as I am practically a local I was raised
on a small cattle and grain farm just north
of Standard where I currently reside. I am
a country girl heart and soul, and truly at
home on the Prairies
I first decided to study journalism while
in high school. I started reading more
novels and taking more photographs, and
became interested in different forms of
media.
Naturally, the next step for me was to
attend post-secondary and study journalism. I continued into SAITs journalism
program, which thankfully for me was
close enough to my parents farm to be
able to go home on weekends to get my
animal fix and do my laundry for free.
At SAIT, I majored in photojournalism
in my last year, choosing my love for photography over my love/hate relationship
with writing.
Upon graduation, I gained a job with
a steel construction company in Calgary
where I rebuilt their website and their
sister companys website, and produced
documentation photographs on various
jobsites.
Since my passion is for taking photographs of people, not buildings, I also
started taking family and individual portraits and booking photo sessions. Please
feel free to give me a like and follow at
facebook.com/adelleellisphotography.
And now here I am by chance of good
timing mixed with a little luck reporting for the Strathmore Times. I am once
again pursuing my journalistic dreams
and looking forward to documenting and
reporting on all Strathmore and Wheatland County offers.

Strathmore High School

(SHS) Winter concert entertained residents, on
Dec. 12 led by Brian Allsopp in the SHS theatre,
with numbers ranging
from orchestral, jazz, choral and rock. The students
performed very complex
pieces expertly, leaving
the audience with a jingle
in their step at the end of
the evening.

Great music breaks up holiday rush

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

Those who missed the Strathmore High School (SHS) winter band performance on Dec. 12 missed a truly delightful
evening to kick back and rest from their holiday preparations.
The musicians and choral group performed some very
complex pieces with precision and unity.
These students work harder than they should and probably dont get as much praise from me as they should; they
are all great musicians and great people. It is a pleasure to
work with them, said Brian Allsopp, SHS band director.
Some of the nights selections included the jazz numbers
Mack the Knife, Softly from My Window and Backrow Politics. The chamber choral numbers moved through seven
challenging numbers. A few examples were soft ballads like
What Maiden Weeping and Roses I Send to You, the upbeat
Aint No Sunshine, and a musical theatre number from Little
Shop of Horrors. The songs showcased the groups ability to

blend harmony and featured several voice types.

The audience was treated to stories and background information surrounding the selections. Allsopp piqued the interest of audience members who may have been unfamiliar
with the music played.
Several of the students showcased their multiple talents by
playing more than one instrument and also singing throughout the evening performance. The concert band performed
well together and showed the talent of the various instrument voices in the orchestra, as well as closely following the
direction of their maestro, to bring the emotion of the pieces
to the audience.
The success of a good music program often rests with the
calibre of teaching staff. Strathmore High School is indeed
fortunate to have dedicated and talented teachers teaching
the music, band and theatre programs.
The SHS band is set to perform in Calgary, Banff and an
international destination, yet to be determined.
Spring and summer performances will be held Mar. 14 and
May 30, 2017.

Ringing in the New Year at local venues

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Following a long-standing tradition,
the Strathmore Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 10, will be rocking
into 2017 on Dec. 31 with food, music,
dancing and door prizes.
Legion Vice President Basil Dwyer is
organizing this years New Years Eve
party, just as he has done for the past
four years.
[There will be] champagne at midnight and of course all the funny hats,
said Dwyer.
Tickets are $45 and can be purchased
at the Strathmore Legion. The event includes cocktail hour at 6 p.m., dinner
at 7 p.m. and music starting at 8 p.m.
There are only 120 tickets available for
purchase and they usually sell out fast.
Its a full house. It usually sells out,
said Dwyer.
Dinner will include a catered roast
beef meal through the Legion kitchen
with all the fixings, said Dwyer.
This years music will be provided by

a Calgary-based band called Shameless

Covers who have previously played at
four different Strathmore Legion New
Years Eve parties and have always
been a hit.
[The audience is] right on the dance
floor right away, said Nigel McEathron
from the band Shameless Covers. The
crowd is so good.
Shameless Covers, previously known
as Pop Culture, is a two-piece band
comprised of Nigel McEathron who
plays guitar, flute, saxophone, harmonica, steel guitar and synthesizer, and is
lead vocalist. The second half of the
band is Donna Hrechka who plays bass
guitar and flute, and is also a lead vocalist.
You can expect to hear popular dance
music as well as old time rock and roll
from the 50s through 90s, and country
and newer pop music covers.
Tickets to the New Years Eve event
will automatically be eligible for door
prizes that have been purchased from
local businesses. A grand prize draw
will take place at 11:30 p.m. for a flat

screen television.
The Legion isnt the only organization in town getting ready to bring in
the New Year with a bang.
The Strathmore Station Pub
will be hosting a New Years Eve Masquerade at 9 p.m. on Dec. 31. Early
bird tickets at a cost of $5 are available
for purchase until Dec. 24, or tickets
can be purchased at the door for $10.
There will be prizes and drink specials
throughout the night.

The Triple B Tavern in Rockyford is hosting a Funnyfest on Dec. 31,
featuring two comedians. Tickets for
the show cost $25 and door opens at
8:30 p.m. Dinner and show tickets go

Over 100 parents showed up to the new Wheatland Crossing School for a meeting and walk
through to see the progress being made. The
school, which wont be open until February,
will hold 450 students from the rural towns of
Standard, Rockyford, Gleichen and Hussar.
The school, several months behind schedule to
be completed, is highly anticipated by parents,
teachers, and students alike, and will have educational spaces fit with 21st century learning.

Capsule Comments
Weedless Wednesday is on January 18 this year. It
is the focal point of National Non-Smoking Week and
focuses media and public attention on the benefits
of quitting smoking and the community resources
available to help smokers stop. Its a great opportunity
to start a new non-smoking life one day at a time.
Heres a list of resolutions unlike the normal ones
people make year after year. 1) Get that medical
check-up this year with your dentist and your doctor.
2) Eat three meals a day. Skipping meals doesnt help
your concentration or your weight. 3) know your
family health history. It will help your doctor help
you. 4) Dont be too sedentary. Work some sort of
exercise into your daysat least 3 x weekly. Finally,
be thankful. Practicing gratitude is good for your
emotional health.
The trick behind keeping a resolution to change your
lifestyle is to make it such a habit that you do it almost
unconsciously. Brushing our teeth is such a habit and
a good one too. The other trick is dont try to change
too many habits at once. Pick one or two that are
most important to you and concentrate on them.
Overloading on vitamin C: The maximum amount
the body can absorb daily is 200mg. Many people
take many times more than that. What isnt absorbed
is excreted by the body in the urine. Smokers and
those undergoing the stress of a cold may require a bit
more. The safe maximum amount is 2000mg daily.
After that, gastrointestinal distress like diarrhea may
occur.
For good information about vitamins, pharmacists
are a great source.

Wheatland Crossing School almost ready

Contined from Page 1
The best example of this is the main
common area, also known as the flex
area. This can be turned into four
smaller rooms, including a seating area,
a black box theatre and a classroom
space, by using folding and sliding
doors that can all be up or all down at
a single time.
We call this our flex area because we
can do lots of different things with it;
it can be adjusted to meet our needs,
said Wheatland Crossing principal, Karen Smith.
Other unique design features include
a living plant wall in the main seating
area, as well as four pillars that will
each be decorated with something that
speaks back to one of the four communities that will all join in the school.
Because were not in a community,
we wanted a school that kids have lots
of space to move around. Lots of places to hang out and go, a place so they
dont feel they need to leave at lunch
hour, said Daverne.
This is a student friendly school.
This is a place where weve worked
hard in the design process to make it
comfortable and a place where kids
will like to hang out. Its a beautiful and
bright space with lots of room for kids
to spread out, be comfortable, work on
projects, eat their lunch and do their
homework. It can be what they want it
to be, he added.
Hallways are wide, coloured lines on
the floor running throughout the school
make it bright and cheery. There arent
going to be traditional desks in every
classroom. There will be tables and soft
seating spread throughout the school.
The cosmetology room, which also
doubles as a classroom, is set up so that
eventually the students can start taking
in customers.
The kitchen is filled with state-of-theart commercial appliances, and there is
plenty of room for tables for people to
sit down and enjoy their lunch.
However, running a cafeteria-style
lunch hour will be new for anyone
coming from the four original schools.
The first several months are going to
be trial and error, said Smith about the
kitchen. Most likely students will need
to pre-order meals so that [staff] knows
how much food to make.
However nice the inside will look
once fully complete, there are still a
few issues overall that need to be dealt
with. The regional water line is currently not in place, so water will need to

be trucked in for the remainder of the

school year.
We will have to haul water to start
with until regional water comes in,
around September. We need a cistern
and a pump for that, said local School
Board Trustee, Alan Larsen, who added
that the pump was ordered over six
weeks ago, but since it is made by only
one company, there is no option other
than to wait for it.
Another short-term issue is the playground: school councils have worked
hard to fundraise, but the playground
apparatus wont be delivered until May.
Thus, between the move-in date and
May there will be no playgrounds for
the elementary students. Programs will
be put in place to make sure students
have productive recess breaks during
the day.
It will be more work and planning
for supervision, but only for a short period of time. Kids can play lots of soccer and ball until the playgrounds are
in, said Daverne.
Regardless of any disapproval about
the location or the space in the school
that some parents still hold, there are
many counteracting benefits. For instance, the school will be able to provide agricultural-focused studies as
well as some possible animal-related
classes. There will also be a greenhouse
and a pond where the students can
learn about water and a water-based
environment.
On site we are looking at having a
greenhouse and maybe some animal
husbandry. We have an outdoor classroom that will be for pond studies. We
have tried to incorporate enough space
to have the flexibility to do that, said
Daverne, adding that some partnerships are already set up with local businesses and post-secondary institutions
with agricultural programming.
[We have a] state-of-the-art facility
for education and it meets our educational needs from an Alberta curriculum perspective and also from working
with our local communities. They have
some really great plans for programming moving forward, he added.
I think a lot of people have not
known what to expect. They havent
seen what the inside looks like. [But]
I have received lots of positive comments. I think we just need to get everything finished, furniture installed,
and move in, said Daverne. Youre
seeing educational spaces that are fit
with 21st century learning. Its going to
be quite beautiful.

Paying special attention to the Draft Land Use Bylaw

To the Editor
Last week, I attended the public hearing for Wheatland Countys Draft Land Use Bylaw. Reviewing this every five to seven
years is part of the municipalitys obligation under the MGA (every municipality within the province is required to do this).
I went to increase my knowledge and understanding of peoples concerns about PROPOSED changes (please note no changes have been decided or voted on).
I also obtained some learning on the state of our world much
closer to home. I was shocked by behaviour from a few participants leading me to rethink some of my position on sexism and
politics.

Strathmore Legion Branch #10

NEWS

By Irene Knappe, Secretary / PR / Membership

This is my last article for 2016. I wish to thank all my readers for taking the time to see
whats happening at The Legion. A huge thank you to all our Volunteers who helped us with
everything that has been thrown out there this year! It has been quite the year and it promises to even be a better year in 2017. Of course, we will need our Volunteers once again
next year, and I encourage you all to get rested up for when we do! Also, I know we have
not shown our appreciation this year to our Volunteers, and we apologize for that. However,
there is a National Volunteer Appreciation Week in April, and we hope to start a new trend
by thanking you during this week. So please look for future announcements.
Dont forget to vote for us at www.readerschoicebestbusiness.com as best in the
categories of BANQUET/RECEPTION FACILITY and SENIORS SERVICES. Were depending on
you and thank you all in advance for your support!!!
I want to reiterate what I wrote last week, as it is very important: I know there are families and Veterans (Past Generation Vets as well as New Generation Vets) and their families,
out there who are having a particularly rough time right now. There are facilities available
to you that can help you get through this. Check you local papers, talk to your doctor, go to
any Church in town, ask at the Town Hall, come to The Legion, and we will all see to it that
you are helped. Please understand that YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!!!
I will be back in the New Year with more news about your Legion. Also, we have a
Facebook Page for our Legion on which you can ask questions and read more in-depth
events and articles. There are also pictures which you would enjoy. Just go to Strathmore
Legion #10 and there we will be!!
At this time of year, all those Volunteers who are running your Legion, The Legions
Staff, and The Kitchen, want to wish everyone out there a VERY MERRY AND JOYOUS
CHRISTMAS with all your family and friends, as well as a HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS 2017!

WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING EVERYONE IN THE NEW YEAR!!

Thought for
the Week
~

Your
circumstances even the best of
them are temporary
- but the person
you become goes on forever.

From the audience, council members were: told perhaps they shouldnt be sitting there; asked if theyve
heard of a lynch mob; advised they were disrespectful.
I believe the seven members of Wheatland council
serve this community because they care. It is not an
easy job. If you dont believe me, consider trying it
out. There is an election next October. Discover the
rules and regulations councillors need to learn and
operate within in order to bring change (if at all possible).
Government, good or bad, whether we like it or
not, is part of the system we live in. I struggled for
a while to understand what lies behind last weeks
observed behaviour. I think it is a belief in the absolute freedom of the individual without government.
That would be anarchy, which brings an entirely new
set of problems. Many people today do not want to
recognize the authority of government even when it
is present. I do not believe the good of the one supersedes the good of the many. Our world becomes
a much better place when things beneficial to all are
taken into consideration.
I understand council needs to review and discuss

the feedback theyve received in the public hearing

and open houses. From what I heard in the meeting and individual conversations, my belief is every
member of council is not in full agreement with the
Draft Land Use Bylaw and changes will be forthcoming. I see them doing their job listening, reflecting,
discussing and working collectively to bring forth a
solution that may not please everyone but hopefully
provides the best solution.
I hope council does not succumb to the squeaky
wheel (whether external or internal) and comes to a
consensus. I hope a collaborative attitude and actions
bring solutions for the concerns voiced. I hope people
respect the service to our community these elected
officials provide.
I prefer the democratic process to anarchy even if I
do not hold with some of the outcomes. Im thankful
as we enter this season espousing Peace on earth and
good will to all men to live in a land where Im able
to enjoy those freedoms.
Wishing all a peaceful and joyful Christmas and
prosperous New Year.

Making changes for the sake of our youth

To the Editor
Considering the fact that an American supermarket
chain recently changed its policies to remove Cosmo
magazine and other softcore womens publications
from stands near the checkouts, perhaps its time for
the grocery stores in Strathmore to do the same.
As a father of three young girls, one of whom is
now able to read, I wonder why I am forced to flip
these magazine around every time I go to the checkouts at local stores.
I have no desire to have my children bombarded
by silly headlines promising hundreds of new sexual
positions or advertising reviews for the latest sex toys.

Is this really something that a five year old girl

needs to read?
Furthermore, the equivalent publications for men
(i.e. Maxim, etc.) are usually stowed away on a high
rack away from the checkouts, out of a small childs
line of sight. Shouldnt Cosmo and its ilk be treated
equally?
The local grocery store that is ready to take up this
challenge and make a change for the better would
certainly have my familys business.

Thank you for Remembering our Roots

To the Editor
I want to thank you for another year of publishing John Godsmans interviews entitled Remembering Our Roots. I commend him on continuing his interest in preserving the historical stories of our local
citizens. Having lived in this community for over 65
years and getting to know more people, I really look
forward to his articles whereby I learn more about
the family backgrounds of old friends and newcomers alike. I appreciate having these stories preserved
in Johns two books, Remembering Our Roots, and I
look forward to his next volume 3.
As a member of the local Western District Historical

Society, I feel it is vital that the valuable stories of our

senior citizens not be lost. As a senior himself, I know
that John has devoted countless hours into travelling
to peoples homes to conduct his interviews and then
to write the stories for your newspaper.
I want to thank John and the Times for all this very
interesting reading, and I hope Remembering Our
Roots continues throughout the coming year.
My best wishes to both John Godsman and all the
Times staff for 2017.

Strathmore Handibus thanks supporters

JENNY SCHUMANN
Strathmore Handibus Association

Strathmore Handibus has experienced another
successful year of providing transportation to seniors and physically disabled clients in the Town
of Strathmore and Wheatland County area.
It is through the support of our residents and
donors that the service was able to provide approximately 6,000 trips to vital medical appointments and social outings to support the independence of our clients.
Strathmore Handibus in a non-profit organization that relies heavily on financial support to fulfill the financial obligations of providing such a
transportation service to our communities. Strathmore Handibus is incredibly grateful for the fi-

nancial support from the Town of Strathmore

and Wheatland County, without which the service
would struggle to fulfill transport to imperative
medical appointments and essential social trips
clients rely on.
If you are stuck, looking for that special gift for
Christmas, or any other time of the year, why not
consider a gift certificate from the Strathmore Handibus. Security in knowing that your loved one is
being transported safely to their destination is
peace of mind, for both you, and that special person in your life.
Thank you to the Town of Strathmore and
Wheatland County, businesses, donors, residents
and community groups that has dedicated some of
their resources to support the Strathmore Handibus Association in 2016.

Our club finished our fall riding lessons at the
end of October and although it was pretty chilly,
everyone finished on a good note.
We did our annual horse health clinic in October where we checked our horses temperatures,
heart rates and other important things to know
about our horses health. A big thank you to Dr.
Katie Ford for coming out to help us with this.
We did a bottle drive in Strathmore on Oct. 29
and really appreciate all of the donations we received. Thank you to Keeling Transport for letting us use your shop to sort the bottles and stay
warm. We also did a Coco Brooks fundraiser in
November; thanks again to everyone who ordered
from us.
We held our monthly meeting on Nov. 1 and
discussed some fun day ideas. It was decided that
we will go to the Flying Squirrel in Calgary, date
to be determined.
Declaration of Mount forms were handed out
and need to be filled in and returned by the January meeting at the latest. 4-H on Parade will be on
June 1-4, 2017 and the regional horse show will
be held in Red Deer on Aug. 11-13, 2017. Awards

of Excellence were presented to Chanel with a silver award and Aliera with a bronze award.
On Dec. 6, our club met at Walmart to do
our shopping for Adopt-a-Family then held our
Christmas party and gift exchange. We played a
fun game, got some great gifts and had fun! We
also had our monthly meeting and are planning
on having a record book workshop and public
speaking workshop in January dates to be determined and we received our record books, etc.
for our year.
Merry Christmas!

Final update of 2017

MARTIN SHIELDS
Member of Parliament Bow River Riding
I am writing you today with a special message
about the Parliament of Canada, which is your
house, the peoples house. As your national legislature, it is one of the important democratic institutions in Canada.
One of the great aspects of our Parliament is
that we are so fortunate to have beautiful historic
buildings in what we call the Parliamentary Precinct here in Ottawas Centre town neighbourhood.
The history behind these magnificent office
buildings is one that is filled with excitement, intrigue and many days of hard work.
After all is said and done, and the lights in the
House of Commons go off after a day of debates,
votes and discussion on legislation that affects all
Canadians, these buildings belong to you. They
belong to the hard-working Canadian families
from coast to coast.
One of the most exciting opportunities for families and people from across Canada is planning
a trip to their nations capital. Ottawa is truly a
beautiful community, and I dont just say this be-

cause its where I work to represent the constituents of Bow River. I say it because its a marvelous
city, there is lots to do and to see here. I think
that every Canadian should come here and visit at
least once if they are able to make the trek.
I write and invite each and every one of you
to consider Ottawa as your travel destination in
2017. Its particularly important for me to share
this message with you as the Centre Block, the
heart of Canadas Parliament buildings, where the
House of Commons and the Senate as well as the
landmark Peace Tower are located, will be closing
and
for at least 10 years. This is a conservative
estimate, and other estimates I have heard say it will
be closed for up to 15 years for the major overhaul
and renovation that is required on this historic
and critically important building for all Canadians.
That being said, if you are planning on visiting
Ottawa, please contact my office at 613-992-0761
or martin.shields@parl.gc.ca. We would be happy
to arrange for you to attend Question Period, or
to give you a personalized tour of these incredible
buildings.
On behalf of my staff in Ottawa, Brooks and
Strathmore, I wish you and yours a very Merry
Christmas, and a healthy and prosperous 2017.

New ag business centre to update the grounds

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Four 1,000 sq. ft. portable buildings will become the future home of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Societys administrative centre.
The buildings will also house the campground
office and retail space, administrative offices and
community needs building.
The planned completion is expected by spring
2017, just in time for several major events being
held at the agricultural grounds, including the annual Strathmore Stampede and Heritage Days.
We hope to get fully underway in spring, although a specific schedule hasnt been set yet.
We still need to do some planning, so once thats
complete and were ready to go then we will get
underway, said Herb McLane, general manager
of the Strathmore and District Agricultural Society.
The new ag business building project came
into existence after it was determined there was a
need to better serve the public of Strathmore and
surrounding communities.
Part of the reinvestment in the facilities on the
park are, one, based on repair and renewal, and
two, based on incremental additions to meet critical needs, said McLane. We have some vision
that one of those new buildings will support our
campground with possibly some retail space as
well as a service capability for the campground.
Some will be office space and some will be for
community needs.
Another project the society will be working on
in 2017 is a link between two existing facilities on
the ag grounds: the Remuda Centre, which is the
main ticket booth and multi-use facility built in
2015, and the older yet still very functional livestock pavilion (LP).
[The] link will physically link those two buildings and it will have some community space in it,
as well as washrooms to support the other structures and facilities, so that we can more fully employ those facilities in terms of rental to the community, said McLane.
These two new planned spaces being built will
be used for a combination of community use as
well as for public events that are held in the park.
The ag society will also be continuing with the
renewal and possible updates of their year round
and seasonal campground, as well as some future
plans for the rodeo grounds and ball diamonds.
[The] ball diamonds are very important to us.
We have two major groups that utilize the facilities, among others: the minor ball association and
the high school. And of course, slow-pitch tournaments are an important outreach and schedul-

ing for us, said McLane. They bring in revenue

that enables us to support the reinvestment in the
park.
In 2016 we had some gaps in our scheduling.
And so we hope to fill that in 2017. We want to
be fully employed and have the capacity to fully
utilize.
The ag society hopes that by completing the
construction of these two new community buildings on the agricultural grounds, it will bring even
more people to the grounds to fully utilize everything they offer, including their popular ball
diamonds.
Weve talked about some possible expansion
as well to the ball diamond complex. There are
identified needs in the community for extra ball
diamond facilities, so we will look at that as well,
said McLane.
All of the upcoming upgrades and improvements that will take place in 2017 and the following years will help the Strathmore and District
Agricultural Society to better accommodate and
bring in more events, baseball tournaments and
people.
Essentially [these upgrades are] to meet a demonstrated need and are revenue sources as well,
said McLane.
Improvements, upgrades and revenue sources
couldnt be more welcome for the ag societys
board after the challenging year 2016 brought
about.
The downturn in the economy as well as the
extreme and dangerous weather experienced during the Stampede and Heritage Days in August
contributed to losses incurred during the 2016
business year, said McLane during the ag societys annual general meeting (AGM) on Dec. 13.
Although there have been challenges this past
year, the society and all its events and services are
supported by the local community. Nothing is a
better example of this than the support shown by
the community after the vandalism to the lights
display in the Christmas Park in November.
So many in the community enjoy the display.
The generous response by the public to the recent vandalism to the Christmas Park is also a
testimony to the interest of citizens, said Dennis
McNeill, president of the Strathmore and District
Agricultural Society, during the AGM.
The society is also planning new events for
2017 to celebrate Canada 150.
The society is loved by many and we will be
even more creative with future planning, said
McLane. I wish to thank all of our dedicated volunteers and staff, without whom we would be unable to provide our services to the community.

New K-9 school delays

SHARON MCLEAY
Times Contributor

There have been some delays in the construction
of the K-9 school and regional recreational facility
since its ground breaking on Oct. 18, but that may
mean good news for those funding the project.
Since that time there has been a number of meetings with regard to looking at approval processes
with Alberta Education and Alberta Infrastructure,
as far as the design of the school, said Project Lead
Mark Brown, who presented the update at the Dec.
7 Strathmore town council meeting.
The schematic designs have been approved, and
now mechanical, electrical and structural designs
are being developed, prior to the project tendering
process. Tenders are expected to go out in January
2017 and the hope is that work can begin in the
spring of 2017, with completion set for 2018.

Some of the innovations in the project are value

engineering, waste elimination and efficiency measures that will also increase value for money spent.
Brown said the delay of work starting in spring
will also mean some savings, as construction in
winter conditions is more costly.
It looks like we will have a greater certainty on
the towns budget and commitments, because we
will know what the total project will cost, as it will
be happening in the spring, said Brown.
The sponsorship committee is looking for fundraising strategies for some of the unfunded components of the complex and they will work with the
school division for approvals on initiatives selected.
They are considering the hiring a consultant, who
would work with in-house staff to secure money
that goes along with naming rights, marketing and
sponsorship assets that accompany events held in
recreation facilities.

For 12 years the Star of Standard,
has been a welcome sight for
people passing by Hans and Kathleen Olsens farm just south of the
village of Standard. The 20ft. tall
Christmas tree is made up of white
lights on the back side of a traditional style red barn. Not only does
it bring cheer to all who see it, but
it is also a welcome landmark sign
during long, cold, winter nights.
People call and ask us to turn the
tree on whenever there is a storm
or bad weather, it helps people
to figure out where they are while

On-It transportation study

SHARON MCLEAY

Information
gathering
may begin with a grant that
would study whether a twoyear project of coach-style
buses linking Chestermere,
Strathmore and Cochrane to
Calgary is feasible.
The final project would
see coach style buses having a couple of morning and
evening routes that would
link to the Calgary Light Rail
Transit system.
We dont need to make
a decision tonight, it is early. However there is a grant
available that we would like
to apply for, said a Town of
Strathmore spokesman at the
recent town council meeting.
The first step is completing a feasibility study and a
survey that would determine
whether such a system would
work. Council was asked if it
could lend its support to apply for a $150,000 grant that
would fund a study. The application is due towards the
end of December 2016. The
grant would be used for the
study; money already allotted by the Calgary Regional
Partnership (CRP) for a potential study would be diverted for service needs later
down the line, if the project
is agreed to by council and if
this money is awarded.
I think it is what they refer to as a no brainer, said
Coun. Bob Sobol. It is not
costing us anything and this
is a way to ensure that it is
a project that would succeed
in our community. It is just
an information gathering exercise.
The southern communities
two-year pilot program has
not yet finished, and Coun.
Rocky Blokland and Coun.
Steve Grajczyk said they had

thought Strathmore was waiting for results, prior to any

decisions that involve Strathmore. Grajczyk said that he
felt Strathmores population
base needed to be at least
30,000; presently it hasnt
enough people to sustain a
service of this kind.
Its too early, too soon,
said Grajczyk.
It was clarified that there is
no requirement to commit to
the project, or to participate
in the feasibility grant and
study. Coun. Denise Peterson
said the CRP has stated any
commitment by Strathmore
will have a made-for-Strathmore solution, and that a
survey is not a commitment.
When CRP transportation
program lead Ettore Iannacito was asked if the pilot
projects are considering the
use by seniors and disabled
riders going to Calgary, he
responded: The coach buses
are not wheelchair accessible.
The current pilot is geared
towards commuters and we
simply tried to accommodate
that target market. It was decided by the CRP board that
we needed to keep it simple
to start with. There is always
an opportunity to include accessible coaches with lifts in
the future. We are keeping an
eye on the demand and will
plan accordingly.
We will conduct survey
research that is statistically
valid to determine what type
of service Strathmore, Chestermere and Cochrane residents want that is reasonable
and affordable, for the pilot
and the future, added Iannacito. This will determine the
need for accessible coaches
going forward.
Council approved joining
with Chestermere and Cochrane to apply for the feasibility study grant.

Farewell to Rosebud Theatres technical director

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor
Byron Linsey, Rosebud Theatres technical director, is moving on to new adventures, and hes leaving big shoes to fill.
Linsey came to Rosebud in 2011, with a rich
background in theatre and construction. Hed been
an actor and founding member of Vancouvers Pacific Theatre, worked in set construction for television and theatre, and done finish carpentry.
We always thought that having the opportunity
to live in a rural community would be fun, he
said. And weve done that, and enjoyed many aspects of it.
Now, six years later, Linseys wife still works in
Calgary and their children are grown, the youngest
graduating from Rosebud School of the Arts (RSA)
It didnt make a lot of sense for us anymore
to be here in Rosebud, Linsey said. It wasnt an
easy decision at the time. But it was time to move
on.
As technical director, he was responsible for
sets, props and lights for Rosebud Theatre productions. That involved determining the costs of a
show, and acquiring or creating materials to fit the
shows design. It also meant working closely with
RSA students.
Youre supervising and teaching [students]
how to do various things, when they help transition from the set of one play to the next, he said.
Hang lights, maintain lights, help set the set up
and that sort of thing.
He helped teach a first-year class Introduction
to Technical Foundations and he was a resource
for second-year student productions.
Whether its building set or building props or
hanging lights or whatever, you have to be there,
he said. Theyre supposed to do the work, but
you help them and supervise what theyre doing.

He was again a mentor in the students fourth

year, when they produced their Final Projects.
The position has had challenges, of course,
mostly due to a quick turnaround between shows.
Sometimes the schedule is very difficult, having a
two-week turnover period from closing one show
and opening the next, he said. Sometimes thats
plenty of time. But dare I say most of the time
its difficult to pull it off and it requires extremely
long days.
There have been rewards too, and the greatest
was the opportunity to be part of this community, he said. Ive made what Im sure will now
be lifelong friends here.
In Calgary, he may get connected with the movie and television industry, but hed also like to explore new avenues.
I wouldnt mind being able to head off in a
completely different direction, he said. But its
good to know I have those skills that I can always
fall back on.
According to Paul F. Muir, RSAs education director, losing Linsey is a big deal.
Hes brought so much to the organization, to
the theatre, but also to the students, said Muir.
He really cared about the students thoughts.
Denise Lines, formerly with the Passion Play,
has been hired as production coordinator.
Denise isnt exactly Byrons replacement, said
Mark Lewandowski, Rosebud Theatres managing
director. Were restructuring the production department to make best use of the skills that we
have within the organization.
Linsey says: As far as the audience is concerned
they wont notice any difference at all.
Linsey adds he plans to keep coming to see
shows in Rosebud, and he invites others to do
the same.
Come to the shows, he said. People who do
come to Rosebud love coming to Rosebud. And
people who havent tried yet, they wont regret it.

SPORTS
Macs midget on horizon
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Its a Christmas tradition in this country: turkey-eating,
present-opening, driveway-shoveling and hockey-watching.
The 39th installment of the Macs AAA Midget Hockey
Tournament has produced a smorgasbord of NHL talent
and crowned champions from six different countries. It is
set to get underway Dec. 26 (10 a.m.) when the Arizona
Bobcats host the Calgary Buffaloes at Max Bell Centre #1.
For the CFR Chemicals Bisons, they aim to be the sixth
team to capture the elusive title for a second time. The Bisons won the Macs Cup back in 1998 when they iced the
Swift Current Legionnaires, one year after losing out in the
championship to the Saskatoon Contacts.
Last season, the Bisons failed to make it out of the round
robin stage, going 1-2-1.
This year, expectations are reasonably higher for the
Herd. The Bisons rolled through the Alberta Midget Hockey
League (AMHL) like big shots to begin the season. They
opened the season on a 19-game undefeated tear, but hit
a miniscule road bump at the start of December. The Herd
appears to be back on track following a 7-1 win Dec. 16
over the Knights of Columbus Pats.
We are a lot more confident this year than we were last
year, said Bisons winger Kanden Hanas. Our hot start
might have given us a bigger target, but that only makes it
more fun.
But theres mythical allure to this tournament. The names
of Wendel Clark, Sidney Crosby, Mike Modano and Jarome
Iginla ring around the arena while parents, fans and scouts
file into the Max Bell Centre to catch a glimpse of some of
the best midget hockey from North America and Europe.
You kid yourself if you dont get excited for the Macs.
Its a cool event; not just for the kids, but for everyone involved, said Bisons assistant coach Paden Grant.
For Grant, it is his first time back at the Macs since he
played for the Bisons during the 2003-2004 season.
The excitement became amplified Dec. 7 when the pools
and schedules were released at the Westin in downtown
Calgary. The Bisons are the host team in Pool 5 along with
the Alaska Oilers, Greater Vancouver Canadians, Moose Jaw
Generals and Red Deer Optimist Chiefs.
The leader after the round robin from each pool advances, along with three wildcard slots going to the next best
records. Playoffs begin on New Years Eve with the championship running New Years Day (6 p.m.) at the Scotiabank
Saddledome.
For captain Brett Trentham, this will mark his third Macs
tourney. Playing for the Bisons as an affiliated player two
years ago, he looks to be a calming presence in the room
this year.
Guys are going to be excited when they step out onto
the ice in front of these crowds, said Trentham. We got to
control that and try to not get too fired up, because thats
when mistakes start to happen.
Bisons head coach Sandy Henry has been involved with
the Macs for two decades. Whether it was coaching his two
sons, scouting and with the Bisons, Henry has yet to drink
from the Cup.
We like our team, we think we have a good squad, and if
we play to our potential, then we have a good opportunity

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The CFR Chemicals Bisons sent their captains to the press conference
for the 39th Macs AAA Midget Hockey Tournament Dec. 7 at the Westin
Hotel in downtown Calgary. Brett Trentham (l-r), Cole Clayton, Tyson Scott
and Kaden Hanas, along with their teammates open the tournament Dec.
26 when they take on the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs at Father David Bauer
Arena.
Tyler Lowey Photo

to get to the final, said Henry.

Henry and his staff plan to work this tournament just
like any regular season game. They plan to work both goalies, roll all four lines and have called up affiliated players Tucker Zdunich (forward, Foothills Bisons midget AA),
defenseman Connor Bertamini (Rockyview Raiders minor
midget AAA) and forward Mark Zachary (AC Avalanche minor midget AAA).
The Bisons hit a speed bump this season when they faced
three teams immediately below them in the AMHL standings. It was their first taste of stronger competition. Following a 3-0 loss to the second-place Calgary Buffaloes, Henry
suggested that the only way to prepare for stiffer competition was to go out and play the stiffer competition.
This tournament will provide their best competition to
date and should leave the tea leaves revealing what this
team needs to continue working on as they prepare for
their playoff drive.
The Macs is a little bit of a Christmas catch 22 on one
hand, its one of minor hockeys highly coveted trophies; on
the other hand, teams dont want to peak or burn out in the
Macs with so much of the regular season at stake.
Only the 1980 Notre Dame Hounds went on to capture
the Macs Cup and the Telus Cup in the same year.
The Bisons staff is trying to find the happy medium in
putting forth the necessary effort to capture the Macs without burning too much energy, hampering their chances at
returning to the Telus Cup.
But the Telus Cup feels like eons from now. The Bisons
battle the Hungarian National U18 team Dec. 23 in Okotoks
at the Pason Centennial Arena as a precursor for the tournament in what should be a thrilling week of hockey.
The fun begins Boxing Day when the Bisons take on their
AMHL foe, the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs at Father David
Bauer Arena. Puck drop is slated for 12:45 p.m. The Chiefs
won the Macs in its inagural year of 1978.
Schedules and standings will be updated throughout the
tournament on the Macs tournament website.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

from the Wheatland Kings!

The Strathmore High School (SHS)

Spartans boys basketball team was denied a chance at the Queen Elizabeth
Tournament title after dropping their
opening game, but still made the most
out of a weekend in Edmonton.
The John Maland High School Wildcats downed the Spartans 96-83 Dec.
15, in the Spartans lowest field goal
percentage game of the tournament.
Jonathan Le May guided the Spartans
with 28 points on 13-of-24 shots, to go
with seven rebounds.
The Spartans shot a cringe-worthy
2-for-28 on three-pointers. Mackenzie
Bain couldnt get any of his 10 attempts
to fall. Ryan Edwards and J.J. Pelly sunk
their only threes.
Bain ended up with 17 points and
four rebounds, while Kashtin Running
Rabbit chipped in with 14 points (7-of15) with a pair of blocks and eight rebounds.
The Spartans brushed back the Ecole
J.H. Picard School 72-44 Dec. 16 in the
consolation semifinal.
Senior centre Caleb Funk led the Spartans with 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting. Le May and Bain added 12 points
each, while Josh Filipionek nailed a
three to finish with seven points.
The Spartans saved their best shooting game (41 per cent) for the consolation final, when they dismantled the
Oscar Romero High School Ravens 11251 Dec. 17.
Bain scored a game-high 22 points
with three three-pointers and Ryan
Edwards contributed 18 points, three
triples, three rebounds and a block.
Caleb Wilchowy and Running Rabbit
turned in double-double performances.
Wilchowy scored 12 points on 7-of-13
shots and 10 rebounds. Running Rabbit
finished with 12 points (6-of-8) and 11
boards.
The Spartans returned to Foothills
Athletic Council action when they hosted the Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves (2-0) Dec. 20 and the Holy Trinity Academy Knights (3-0) Dec. 21. The
Spartans (2-0) pick up after the break
with a tournament in Claresholm running Jan. 6 and 7.

with 46 points
She did everything very well today.
She shot the ball well, drove well and
handled the ball well. She is everything
you can ask for in a guard, said Spartans head coach Dion Galandy.
The Spartans started hot, hitting from
all over, leading 26-13 after the first.
Brianna Kennedy was named the
tournament MVP with her barrage from
the three-point line. She scored 15
points in each game and connected on
10 three-pointers. She was feeling it in
the finals, when she buried five triples
despite getting whacked in the face at
the start of the third quarter. She was
hitting the deep ones too, some coming
a few steps from beyond the line.
The Spartans stretched their lead to
20 in the third, but the Lady Talons
wouldnt go away that easily.
Lady Talons guard Kamille Svrta dialed up three straight triples from the
top of the circle to bring her team within nine with less than a minute to go,
but they simply ran out of time.
Kaylin Larson and Ffyona GibsonSmith tied for the Spartans team high
with 18 points.
The Spartans withheld a strong second half push from the Notre Dame
Collegiate Timberwolves, as they slighted them 64-54 in the semis.
Larson led the way with 17 points,
while Kennedy and Davidson each con-

In the opener, the Spartans blasted
the Banff High School Bears 81-10 Dec.

They held the Bears scoreless in the
first and third quarter.
Senior forward Tatum Wathen scored
a team-high 16 points, while GibsonSmith and Davidson registered 14
points and Sydney Boyd chipped in
with 12 points.
The Spartans (2-0) hosted the Timberwolves (0-2) Dec. 20 and the Holy
Trinity Academy Knights (3-0) Dec. 21
at the SHS gym. Following the Knights
game, the Spartans will break for the
holidays and pick up action Jan. 11

Hawks place second

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
A strong second-half push in the
final of their home tournament just
wasnt enough for the Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks boys basketball
team to prevail.
Trailing 33-17 at half, the Hawks outscored the Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves 39-26 in the second half,
but still fell 59-56 Dec. 17 at HCC gym.
It was a close game and a fun environment in the final. The fans were
banging the bleachers on defense and
trying to distract their free throw attempts, said head coach Josh Jalbert.
Unfortunately, our three-point shooting got gradually worse as the tournament went on. We need to try and
make our shots easier and get higher
percentage looks.
The Hawks only connected on 13
per cent (3 for 23) of their threes in
the final. Senior guard Jericho Ricafort
sunk a pair on nine attempts.
When we started to get the ball
down low, we were able to get a couple baskets. Then we started forcing
some turnovers, got out in transition
and scored eight points in two minutes
in the fourth quarter, said Jalbert.
Freshman guard Alex Nwoye scored
a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds in the final. Luke Sproul went
6-of-13 for 13 points to go with eight
boards and two steals.
In the semis, the Hawks laid waste to
the W.G. Murdoch Trojans 73-66 Dec.
17, jump started by an early 24-6 lead
after the first quarter.
Nwoye turned in his best game of
the tournament, registering a double-

double with 28 points (11-of-25) and

10 rebounds. He also picked up four
dimes and seven steals.
Reid Jensen shot just under 50 per
cent from the floor (8-of-19) to finish
with 19 points. He nailed three trays
on 12 attempts, hauled down six rebounds and supplied one assist.
Freshman forward Ralph Valencia
was efficient, going 4-of-7 for 11 points,
2-for-5 from beyond the arc and drilled
both his free throw attempts.
Our guys are starting to gel now after a couple games together. We still
need to work on our ball movement.
We need to get away from playing
hero ball. We need to give it up and
have guys play well without the ball in
their hands, said Jalbert.
The Hawks disposed of the Didsbury High School Dragons 50-34 Dec.
16 in the opener.
Nwoye once again lead his squad
with 12 points on 5-of-16 shooting, but
was 0-for-4 from the land beyond. His
nine boards were a game high as he
also finished with four steals.
Landon Osachuk, Ricafort and Valencia were the only Hawks to sink a
three, as the team went 3-for-15 from
deep.
Jensen finished with nine points and
nine steals, while Valencia chipped in
with seven points, two boards and two
steals.
The Hawks were more effective the
closer they moved to the hoop throughout the tourney. They shot 18.67 per
cent from three, but improved to a
respectable 40.67 per cent when they
moved inside the arc.
The Hawks (2-2) travel to High River
Dec. 21 to take on the Timberwolves,

Hawks housed by Knights

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The Holy Trinity Academy Knights
used their length and size advantage
to dominate a shorthanded Holy Cross
Collegiate Hawks girls basketball team
to the tune of an 81-31 win Dec. 14 in
Okotoks.
We were down to eight players and
greatly outsized, but our girls didnt
back down and played hard until the
end, said Hawks head coach Brad Everett.
For the Hawks, they were standing among the trees down low, as the
Knights out-rebounded them 42-22
and blocked 10 Hawks shot attempts.
Whenever the Hawks tried double
or triple-teaming the Knights (3-0)
low-post plays, their guards were able
to roam freely, creating any shot they
wanted.
The Hawks (0-3) best quarter came
in the fourth, when they recorded 12
points, highlighted by a Hope Given
three-pointer from the top of the threepoint line.
Banking the head-on shot home,

she turned around joyfully, holding up

three fingers towards her bench.
She had a few hiccups early, but
that three really gave her confidence
and it rubbed off onto others, said Everett.
Given closed out the quarter shooting 4-of-6 and 1-for-2 from the charity
stripe, finishing with 11 points.
Darcie Weirs shot wasnt falling, but
she led the Hawks with four assists,
and forced five steals.
I thought we were rushing our plays
tonight, we need to slow things down
a half step; not everything needs to be
a fast-break attempt, said Everett. We
are going to take the open shots when
they present themselves and hopefully
they go in.
Freshman guard Brooke Miller led the
Hawks with five rebounds and Taryn
Tanton chipped in with four boards.
The Hawks hosted the Highwood
High School Mustangs (1-1) Dec. 19 and
battled the Notre Dame Collegiate Timberwolves (0-2) Dec. 21 in High River.
They return from the holiday break to
host the Strathmore High School Spartans (2-0) Jan. 18.

Bisons bounce back with blowout

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The CFR Chemicals Bisons responded to their first dose of
adversity by erupting for seven goals in what turned out to
be a bit of a laugher Dec. 16 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
After seeing their 19-game unbeaten streak snapped, the
Bisons endured a three-game winless streak before dumping
the last place Knights of Columbus Pats 7-1.
The Pats (6-15-2) leading scorer, Seattle Thunderbirds
prospect Graeme Bryks, banked one from behind the net off
Bisons netminder Hunter Young to jump to an early 1-0 lead.
The Bisons, who were shut out in their last outing for the
first time this season, took the lid off their offense with seven-straight goals, sparked by their defense.
Cole Clayton leads the Bisons defensive unit with seven
points and kick started the rout with a pair of Duncan Keithian passes.
From behind his own net, he set Jackson Salt up with a
pass that would have been illegal if the two-line pass rule
was still enforced. Salt sprinted in on Pats netminder Braedan Stephen, unleashing a quick snap shot from in tight.
I was feeling pretty good coming into tonight, said Clayton. We knew this was a beatable team, so I tried a couple
new things and they worked out.
While he might not have picked up an assist on the winner,
Clayton certainly put the play in motion with another great
outlet pass to Tarun Fizer, who set up Brandon Machado for
a breakaway. Machado, one of the Bisons fastest skaters, was
off, shooting and burying his seventh goal.
His panic threshold is the highest Ive ever seen. He sees
the ice better than anyone and makes passes that make you
say, holy cow, how did he see that? said Bisons assistant
coach Mike Langen.
Clayton nearly added a pair of snipes, but pounded point
blasts off the crossbar twice.
The Herd carried a 3-1 lead into the first break when another defenseman, Liam Belcourt, joined the rush 24 seconds
after Machados marker, and stuffed his second on the season
past Stephen.
The Bisons (18-2-3) were scoring goals in bunches in what

was their final home game before the holiday break.

In the second period, while on the power play, a point shot
from Tyler Petrie was knocked down in front; Blake Wells
rebound attempt saw the puck squirt over to Joel Krahenbil,
who tapped in a backhander on the doorstep for his fifth
goal.
Off the ensuing faceoff, Payton Krebs, who was amidst a
mini-slump only one point in his previous four games
came roaring back down the ice 52 seconds later with Salt
and Cayde Augustine, chipping in his 11th marker.
Krebs was reunited with Salt on the top line as they welcomed affiliated player Jaevon Bushlen to form the allOkotoks line. Buschlen seemed to fit in nicely, having played
with Krebs in peewee and bantam.
He has a great hockey sense. He might not be the biggest
or fastest, but he knows where to go to be successful, and
thats only going to help him out going forward, said Krebs
about Buschlen, who has six goals and 15 points in 17 games
for the Rockyview Raiders minor midget AAA.
Zach Huber made his debut for the Okotoks Oilers of the
Alberta Junior Hockey League, clearing a spot for Buschlen.
With Landon Melzer and Kaden Hanas resting lower-body
injuries, Luke Jensen (Airdrie Lightning midget AA) and
Ethan Strang (AC Avalanche minor midget AAA) made their
debuts for the Herd.
Following the Krebs goal, the Pats called a timeout.
Whatever coach Brennan Menard drew up didnt set in, as
nine seconds later, it was Fizer off the draw, taking the puck
deep and driving home his 11th of the season as he moves
up to seventh in league scoring with 11 goals and 26 points.
Wells added his team-leading 12th snipe from Krahenbil
with 1:38 remaining in the third, as the Bisons collectively
exhaled a feeling of relief to be back in the win column.

For Young, it was an important start

in net. Giving up the behind-the-net
goal early, and almost kicking in another rebound, he looked solid between
the pipes for his first win since Nov.
25, where he recorded 15 saves in a 2-1
win over the MLAC Beverly Optimists
on home ice. It was his first win in
three starts as he continues to work his
way back from missing seven games
with an upper body injury. His 14 saves
earned him his sixth win.
It was tough for him to miss a big
chunk of games and practices, said
Langen. When he finally came back,
he picked up a couple losses, so it was
nice for him to get the win. We are going to need him down the stretch.
With the win, the Bisons have
clinched their 15th-straight playoff
berth.
Its nice to know that we clinched,
but our goal now is to earn that firstround bye and avoid the best-of-three
series in the opening round, said Langen. It will also provide us with a week
off, which would be nice.
The Bisons final regular season game
before the holiday break went Dec. 21
at the Max Bell Centre when they took
on the Calgary Northstars (10-11-2).
In preparation for the Macs AAA
Midget Hockey Tournament, the Bisons
took on the Hungarian National U18
squad Dec. 23 at Pason Centennial Arena in Okotoks in an exhibition match.
The Bisons return to AMHL action
Jan. 13 (8 p.m.), when they host the
Calgary Flames (14-7-1) at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Brooker bags HJHL milestone

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Brooker Pretty Youngmans third hat
trick of the season and second in five
games helped to lift the Strathmore
Wheatland Kings over the Medicine
Hat Cubs.
The 7-5 icing of the Cubs Dec. 18 at
the Kinplex Arena ended a brief threegame slide, sending the Kings into the
holiday break on a high note.
Riding extra high was Pretty Youngman, whose hatty also elevated him
into rarified Heritage Junior Hockey
League (HJHL) air, as he surpassed the
100-point plateau.
It felt good to finally accomplish
that. Its something I have been working hard to finally get it. I have played
with guys on the Kings and in Okotoks
who got 100 points. It was something I
always wanted to do, especially in my
final year, said Pretty Youngman.
The Siksika Nation product leads the
Kings (10-14-3) with 18 goals and 36
points during his most productive season.
Im just trying to do my best and
help this team out as much as I can,
said Pretty Youngman.
His 100th point came on a goal at
the 18:46 mark of the third period one
night earlier at home during a 5-3 loss
to the Cochrane Generals (23-4-1).
Grabbing the puck, Pretty Youngman
has it sitting on the shelf beside his
first ever HJHL goal.

Another milestone was reached during the Kings final game before the
holiday break. Rookie netminder Indiana Kelly backstopped his team with
40 saves in his second start to pick up
his first career win.
He faced a ton of shots from the sixminute mark of the second period and
on. They pressured us pretty hard, but
he held his own, said assistant coach
Braden Desmet.
Im very happy for him. He hasnt
missed a single practice all year and he
works really hard, said Pretty Youngman.
Kelly cruised through the opening
frame, and was only required to make
six saves as his team jumped out to
an early 3-0 lead on goals from Zachary Meadows, Pretty Youngman and a
short-handed snipe from alternate captain Brenden Moore.
Following a scoreless second frame,
the two teams went bonkers, combining for nine goals in the third, as the
Cubs (5-18-5) were taking advantage
of the lazy play from the Kings.
I dont know if we were tired, or
guys were thinking about the break, or
what. But we took our foot off the gas
and any team in this league can come
back against you if you let them, said
Desmet.
The Cubs sit fifth, eight points behind the Kings in the southern division.
Trailing 5-1 in the third, the Cubs
scored four times in the final 8:31, but

were kept at bay by a pair of George

Montour goals.
Montour, who turned 20 on Dec. 10,
exploded with five points in his best
game of the season. It was the first time
Montour registered a multi-point performance this season.
He does a lot of things well for this
team and is starting to get rewarded
for his work lately, said Desmet, who
saw his Kings outshoot the opposition
(47-45) for only the eighth time in 27
games.
While the Kings head into the break
with a win, they still havent found an
answer for the monkey on their back
that is the Cochrane Generals.
The Generals did what the Generals
do, as they clipped the Kings 5-3 Dec.
17 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Typically a lopsided affair, the Kings
battled, but couldnt close the gap on
the Generals.
Cochrane led 2-0 after two, when
Matt Thomson drove down the right
win, unleashing his heavy snap shot
from the faceoff circle on the power
play, cutting the Generals lead in half.
Pretty Youngman scored a pair in the
final five minutes, but the Kings simply ran out of time, as Hoover made 40
saves in net.
I was relatively happy with our performance even though the outcome
wasnt what we wanted, said Desmet.
The Kings have played the reigning
Southern division champions slightly
better this year. They sit 0-3 with a mi-

nus-8 goal differential, marginally different from going 0-4 last year with a
minus-13 differential.
The standings are kind of locked
up at the minute, so we need to come
back from the break and worry about
our own game plan as we shape up for
a playoff drive, said Desmet.
That marks the end of Kings hockey
in 2016. The team resumes action Jan.
6 when they take on the Generals for
the final time this regular season at the
Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre. Their
first home action in the New Year goes
Jan. 7 (8 p.m.), when they welcome the
Cubs back to the Strathmore Family
Centre.

Wheatland hockey breaks for holiday season

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

The Wheatland Warriors can coast into the
holiday season on a high note, having won three
of their past four South Central Alberta Hockey
League games.
On Dec. 18, Trey Gillis the bantam Warriors
long-haired spark plug took a five-minute boarding major at the horn of the first period, banishing
him from any return.
The Foothills Bisons (2-19-0) were given a
lengthy power play to start the second period,
and it turned into nearly two minutes down fiveon-three when Kegan Law picked up a tripping
minor.
The Warriors only allowed one goal, gathering
momentum leading to the 5-2 win at the Strathmore Family Centre.
It wasnt just the penalty kill that was clicking;
the man advantage also factored in the outcome.
Mitch Tessemaker buried a pair of power play
markers. The first came 9:01 into the opening
frame when Adam Kirkpatrick spotted Tessemaker from the corner, just below the right faceoff
circle on a brilliant feed. Tessemaker wasted no
time depositing the puck into the open net. Cole
Walker picked up his eighth assist and 10th point
on the play.
Later in the second, coming off another big penalty kill, Tessemaker cranked a knuckle puck from
the blue line, tumbling top corner for the eventual
winner. They were his first two snipes of the year.
The Warriors (8-11-2) stretched the lead to four
with goals by Jarred Schrock and Nolan Bailey,
with a pair of assists to Kage Yellowfly and Kirkpatrick.
The Bisons were attempting to make a game of
it with several strong shifts in the third, cycling
down low and throwing anything and everything
on net.
Corey Ross turned away 38 shots, as he picked
up his second win.
Tessemaker put a bow on the game as he assisted on Yellowflys goal with 29 seconds in the
third.
The Warriors resume play in 2017 when they

Wacy Sandum, Robert Butterwick, Ryan McHarg and Benoit added assists.
Ty Tarvyd turned away 20 shots for his fourth shutout.
The Chiefs then manhandled the 2-19-2 Foothills Bisons
8-2 Dec. 18 at the Strathmore Family Centre.
Benoit scored four straight goals, Hnattowich picked up
three helpers, Zachary Suntjens finished with a goal and an
assist and Lucas Muenchrath supplied a pair of assists, while
Riley Stovka made 20 saves for his eighth win.
The Chiefs return Jan. 7 when they take on the Taber Golden Suns (7-9-5). at the Taber Community Centre.

7 to take on the Olds Grizzlys (11-5-1). Their first
home game of the New Year goes Jan. 15 when
they host the Grizzlys at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
CHIEFS WINNING STREAK ENDS
The Wheatland Chiefs experienced the most
hectic part of their schedule leading up to the
Christmas break, as they played five games in one
week, which saw their 12-game winning streak
come to an end.
First, the Chiefs dumped the Okotoks Oilers Green 6-4 on Dec. 13. They then had to turn
around and take on CRAA Blue (7-3-1) the following evening at the Max Bell Centre #1, where they
were bested 3-2.
Defenseman Scott Desserre blocked a shot with
his hand, breaking a finger, which now requires
surgery. There is no timetable for his return.
The Chiefs (19-2-1) hopped back in the win
column with a 3-0 blanking of the Oilers Green
(7-10-3) Dec. 17 at Hussar Arena. Sitting first and
second in league scoring, Isaac Benoit and Chayse
Hnatowich added first-period tallies along with
Kale Clouston.
